- Making Dark Magician A viable option in modern Yu-Gi-Oh is no easy task, but I love the challenge. Join me on the progression series, where throughout 2024, lets see how far we can take this deck.
In this video we will be revisiting my last deck profile, looking at test hands and the most optimal way to play out hands.

After seeing this, I'm positive that there is a way to make use of DM,DMK I refuse to believe there's no way to add RE Flare Metal to the endboard for a burn tax like Masq n BW Drag, hopefully you'll test it, it's nice seeing you innovate DM nice vid
using this list myself but the difference is that i added 4extra cards to potentially get another negate and recycle visa, link 1 scarclaw with level 4 earth the field spell,scareclaw nova and trap
I do have a few questions:
1. If I'm unable to afford a s:p little knight, what can I use instead?
2. When siding for games 2 and 3, what cards do you side out?
3. How long did it take to get hang of Runick Dark Magician?

I found a better combo for tyrant lock. Special summon magician soul then send pharaonic advent to grave. Normal summon magician rod add magician salvation and activate. Use magician soul effect to get extra draw or use magician salvation to summon diablestar witch. Now activate shadows light to special summon minerva. Or if you have diabelstar witch or search diabelstar witch with seeker of sinful spoil then set original sinful spoil snakeeyes. Depending on situation.. you can use that to special summon a normal monster flameguard flamevell (dragon/tuner/fire lvl 1) or infernoid decatron and make it level 3. Then xyz summon m-x saber invoker. Then search and special summon heroic morning star then add heroic envoy to search for another morning star and special summon it since you have 2 warrior lvl4 monsters. Then xyz summon dugares to special summon pharaonic advent. Then use soul servant and mx saber to link summon anaconda verte and send fusion deployment to special summon dark magician. Then use phraonic advent to search for tyrant throes. If you have succesor soul, apophis swamp diety then its easy lock.. but diabel star witch or seeker can get you level 3 or a normal monster. What ever is needed. If worse comes worse you can search for jet synchron and go for barrone or boreload savage d. you can also use diabelstar witch + dm to summon ebon magician to summon another dm and use eternal soul to summon the other dm on opponents turn but not via verte dm summon. Happens if you have fusion deployment in hand or have pharaonic advent in hand and magician souls can be used to summon dm or if you have tyrant throes in hand.
Your video inspired me to build my own runick dm variation. It's definitely difficult to play properly but the testing has been so fun the deck has quickly become a favorite of mine

If we can buff and protect Dragoon most of the time fire king can’t get over it, still a tough matchup though :x awesome video, I hope we can kick fire king to the curb where they belong

Finally a matchie vid! When you posted the decklist i have used your variant but im not sold on the runick stuff yet did some tweaking myself and found it can be good without getting negated but when you opponent has 1 or 2 negates deck losses alot going second is even worse. So i like to see what you changed im not sold on this DM version yet. Keep it up hope see more vids!

@@MatchieYGO I’ve been playing it a ton and messing with the list slightly as I go! Took it to locals the other day and won 2/3 matches with it.
One of the main packages I’ve gone back and forth with- is the shaddoll package. Sometimes I feel like the 3 spots in the extra deck it takes up is tough, so I swapped out for a gimmick puppet nightmare. Not sure it’s perfect, but something to consider!
Tossed a psychic end punisher in for gamestates where I’m losing hard, and might potentially draw into an ash with no other cards in hand. (Swapped droplets out for ash). It really throws off my opponent who isn’t expecting it, and if I’m already losing, the unaffected part of psychic end has been crucial. Let me know what you think!! bravo for the work you do I love the videos and I like your way of testing new things I definitely think that the DM deck (runnick) DOES NOT work together the boards are too weak the DM part slows down runnick and you are often found with a runnic card or a dead fountain (dragon brings a negate but no more with an additional cost in finding combos you are often short on resources in hand
Although I agree with some of what you’re saying, the idea of this list is to open up a route to progression. I do agree the deck isn’t 100% complete, far from it, however I do think there is a foundation here for a viable strategy :)

Love the profiles and test hands man. Tried testing Runick with DM awhile back and it broke my brain. Gonna give it another shot in the near future
Not sure if you’re still checking comments on this video, but I’ve done some testing on this and wanted to share my thoughts.
1. I find that on hands where this build pops off, it really pops off. However the hands where it bricks, it really bricks. Consistency has been a bit of a problem for me, and I’m not sure if it’s ratios or what, but I find I always end up with only 1 runick card in hand and can’t combo off properly, so I end up sending it off Souls for draws. It’s not bad, but it’s also not really getting me anywhere without a good amount of luck as i feel the build is lacking powerful one card starters to draw into (what else is new in DM lol). Also, the fact that some of the Runick cards can’t really be activated going first except to summon Hugin locks you into not getting Fountain draws turn 1 which feels bad. Sure they come online during your opponents turn, but eh, small gripe.
2. Further to the above point about draws being luck based, The Dark Magicians doesn’t feel good enough to commit to unless I know I’m building more with the rest of my hand already. On those brick hands, making the Dark Magicians in the hope I’ll draw into enough runick engine cards or Visas Starfrost to keep comboing feels risky. It pays off sometimes, and falls flat other times where I’m passing on The Dark Magicians and maybe one runick card or something like that.
3. Visas seems pretty good and significantly increases the ceiling of The Dark Magicians. I’ve been playing around with a Tzolkin -> Crystal wing play because then you can use the DMG + Starfrost for the Syncro, and the DM + Tzolkin after for Dragoon if you have Secrets in hand. Been finding success with that enough that I’ve actually bumped secrets to 3 (crazy, I know).
Overall, solid list. It’s got clear strengths and weaknesses.
I’m interested to see where you take it further, and what additional normal summons and power cards could be put in! I’m going to try Diviner because of it’s tied in synergy with Tzolkin, as well as a few other ideas, and see what I can come up with further. I’ve also been messing around with Illusion Magic as a 1 or 2 of with the 3x Secrets because it’s decent at dodging hand traps on Rod and Soul effects, and it fills your hand with bodies to make The Dark Magicians with. Dreaming here, but imagine a Link-2 that could use DM from hand, and grab soul servant from deck or something. Sheesh, would make Rod a usable 1 card starter. Alas, never gonna happen. Anyways, sorry for the long and delayed comment, wanted to really give this a test before communicating my thoughts. All the best!
I agree, I think the list does need a lot of work, I’ve been putting in so many hours trying to figure out an ideal list. There will be a video in the future going over all of those thoughts I had and where the list is right now.
or I might throw together a stream and build the list using this foundation with the viewers.

Last thought, in case I miss that stream, Upstart is at 3 now… Might be an idea to include the full play set for a “The Dark Magicians” focused consistency build. It could be a solid consistency piece, not sure what to cut though for a 37 card deck. Anyways, enjoy your day!

As much as I love this idea, this perfectly encapsulates my experience with Runick Dark Magician.
Turn silence helps dm deck. Anti negate. So if you summon tricolor gadget and then you special summon magicians souls and activate its effect to draw a card. You can activate turn silence and make it level 4 and negate monster effects aka handtraps. Now imagine sending pharaonic advent to grave and summoning dugares and special summon pharaonic advent. You have access to any continuous trap like skill drain or a tyrant throes lock. Diabellestar witch and dark magician ebon sorcerer xyz summon to ebon illusion magician. Ebon gives you normal dark magician and diabellestar witch with original sinful spoils will give you a normal fire monster like flamevell guard not only its a dragon but its also a tuner so its a versatile card. Before i tried tyrant throes lock but the problem is adding too much cards to make it work are brick cards in an already bricky DM deck. But here most cards are useful in itself and can work if the situation didnt present it self but if it does you can lock your opponent in summoning effect monsters. It is an advantage once you manage to execute this. You can turn silence magician rod to protect him from negates and make him level 6 and do some xyz shenanigans with DMGirl. Summoner monk searches tricolor gadget too so its adds consistency to this deck. So many ways to access cards specially dark magician. You only need 1 vanilla dark magician since we have dark magician ebon sorcerer.
I’d recommend you try out Swordsoul Chengying as the other synchro 10. Since you’re always banishing things with the Runick engine, you can get a non targeted banish on the field and graveyard.

I was really inspired by your branded build and have had a lot of fun playing it against friends (minus the triple tactics package cause who can afford that).
Im curious on your thoughts on this runick variant compared to the branded? Ive been burned picking up cards at the wrong time ( cartesia at $55 a pop a week before reprint) so im hesitant, but it seems like a very fun deck with lots of potential.
How would you stack them up against eachother?

Fortunately for you, the main deck isn’t that pricy, the ED gets a little expensive, but there are budget options for you.
However the Branded version is still very very good

Branded fusion is very good. I’ve been testing it in this list also
i commited to your ratio of 3 illusion of chaos. dont have village at all, but do have triple copys of DRNM just in case. this deck is just very cracked. your a true legend bro, keep going

I think tyrant throes lock is the best 1st turn setup for dark magician deck. Going second succesor soul, lair of darkness + superpolymerization can wipe or diablestar + sinful riciela (diebelstar witch or dark magician + effect veiler into chaos archfiend can boardwipe) or if you have a 60 card deck pitch in clockwork night to summon chimera tech dragon board wipe. Verte and fusion deployment can easy search and summon 1 cyber dragon. So clockwork acts like a superpolymerization in that regard. Transmodify can special summon pharaonic advent via diabelstar witch and dark magician.. megistric maginician is interesting to add coz it can recycle banished spell like soul servant or sinful spoil cards.

S:P is much more consistent and brutal if you also have I:P in the deck so you can summon it on the opponents turn

Maybe, but I don’t think they’ll hit enough to really kill the deck. I also don’t expect us to get a ban list for a few months at the earliest :) glad you enjoy it! I’ve been having a blast also
Hi thx vor the Video, but I Must say that the way you play with the runik Part ist not vell played must the you used runik just to draw cads. Und in the end you makes a illegal play with circle and just took a card that you shouldn't have taken
The circle play at the end, was seeing the top 3 cards of my deck, stacking them in an order. THEN the dark magicians effect resolves (after activating a spell card) to draw 1 card :)

Im not sold on this variant of dm i kinda like the branded dm but i want to keep its integrity as much as possible and why dont u play red eyes fusion u can pop 2 cards and do double burn with dragoon
Probably because REF blocks off other summons + adds an extra brick into the deck. (My assumption, at least)

A question for you pro dm players. Does it make a difference if i play 1 illusion of chaos + 2 preparation of rites, instead of 3 illusion of chaos?
I’m not a pro :) but I can provide my opinion; it would be far more optimal to play 2-3 prep and 1-2 IOC… HOWEVER, droll is everywhere right now, and will be even more prevalent going forward.
The idea is, I’d rather get drolled on the IOC search than prep… the math doesn’t change enough (seeing IOC) to make it worth walking into droll more often.

EDIT: I rewatched and saw instant fusion being used. So the summon wasn't illegal. I just never used instant fusion for hugin in my runick deck. However, Hugin shouldn't stay on the field in end phas because of the pop effect. That's all I'll say
I hate to be that person but Hugin was summoned in an illegal zone. The runick monsters have to be summoned in the Extra Monster zone. Later in the same test hand you summoned Geri into the EMZ, which is correct, but Hugin was still in the incorrect zone. The draw 2 didn't matter on resolution of the runick spell but it just annoyed me when you claimed that Hugin was protecting the board. Hugin shouldn't be on the board, unless you used it for S:P material
I don’t think it was illegal. He summoned Hugin off of instant fusion, not off of runick. Unless I’m missing something.

@royalgames6090 I said in another comment I didn't see that before. But hugin should still get popped in End Phase because of instant fusions effect
Correct, Hugin should’ve been destroyed (followed by activating its effect to be sent back into the extra deck)
