10mm to 11mm Mechanical Pump Upgrade / Jeep XJ 2.5TD

- I've picked up a fully mechanical pump for the Jeep XJ with an 11mm plunger in it. In this video I will be testing the pump out to increase the fuel delivery by about 20 percent. This should spool the turbo up much sooner giving more low down torque on demand, provided everything is dialed in good with throttle.
Up top I'm not really looking for any more power as 100 - 110kph is about as fast as the speed limit goes up here. But this pump should make these kind of speeds more effortless although I think the issue will be exhaust back pressure and a possible egt build up if pushed too hard. But this video is just for testing purposes so i will see what its like and tweak the setup over time for the best performance.

8:25 these videos are great man, they are the ying to the yang of the camp videos. They are also so relatable and thus very enjoyable to watch. You can picture your mrs when you come in: "Get everything done you wanted to?" ... "no, totally pointless, I tried to 'upgrade' something and ended up wasting 2 days, breaking a tool that cost me £100 and now I have to buy something to even get the truck moving which will cost £400, I'm also starving, exhausted and my hands are cut and bruised, anyway how have the kids been?
"
I can totally relate! And then I argue with myself. Why the beep
Are we doing this. Then I take a break come back. Realizing I went about this all wrong. Then actually accomplish my original objective. And can’t really share with anybody what I actually did. Because they don’t understand lol nor care to listen. But then you meet another xj guy at the gas station. And he’s like how did you do that? 2hrs later you’re still at the gas station talking to the guy. And the wife is like. I thought you were just out getting gas. No. I’m explaining the thing I did last week that I said would take 2hrs but took 2 days. Wife’s like to who? This guy at the gas station I just met who also has an XJ. And now we are going 4x4ing on Saturday 😂.
I don't know what you are doing but I love watching what you are doing
I loved this , complete mission , intial issue turned into unplanned maintenance on injectors , turns out to be fuel adjustment screw and index .
Then ran like a champion .
With some Mad Mike engine bay bench test set up thrown in for good measure.
Classic
I understood about 10% of the video but watched to the end in any case! Fascinating as ever Mike! I wish I had 10% of your knowledge of engines & mechanics.
The only way to learn is by doing, I bet you learned plenty just watching, I know I did!
00:57 here we go!!!! time to crack a drink and settle in.
Looks like it was a worthwhile upgrade! Pretty cool getting to see the unit operate outside of the engine with the injectors, it was also nice to see a bit of your process. Thanks for sharing!
I'm glad it's working well. It was disheartening at first, but that was actually my lack of knowledge, lol. I suppose it all led to me discovering a dripping injector.
Thanks for watching
Workshop to Wilderness, and this video is exactly that. Mechanical challenges like this frustrate the hell out of you at the time, but the satisfaction in the days/weeks that follow are why you do it. You’re a skilled chap and I think you’d be missing it if you didn’t put yourself through this stuff😆. That was a great watch, nice one Mike!
Last year i discovered this chanel... Now i found my self with a 2001 3.1 VM diesel Grand Cherockee!! The only problem is.. i dont know nothing about mechanics...😅
Haha, awesome. Congratulations on the ZJ. The best start is with something like this. I knew nothing 12 years ago, but the jeeps been a great project and very rewarding.
👍. NEVER STOP PLAYING WITH IT!!!😂
Words to live and die by!
Freaking amazing video, I'm not aware of anything with similar flavor on the tube.
14:00 needs to be your merch on a t shirt
I watch all your videos, regardless. We’ve all been in this situation. You persevered. Well done.
I love that you keep playing with it.
Nice Video with a lot of live lessons. Thanks
Thanks for watching.
650 EGT uphill full chat in fifth is pretty reasonable.
Good job 👍
It doesn't seem too bad. It was originally 700, but I dialled the pump back. The pyro gauge is just out of cylinder 4, so it should be pretty accurate. Hopefully, 650 for short periods isn't an issue.
Thanks for watching
Great video mate, incase you missed it you left the split washer on top of the motor at 24:03
Your presentation is awesome! Love the videos
I’d be really interested to see some dyno runs of this with all the upgrades you’ve done
I will book something in. The dyno shop is about 7 hours south, so I would probably do a camp on the way back. I will contact them and see if they let me film it.
Always enjoy your uploads! I especially liked this one, thankyou :)
Great job man!
Thanks for taking us along on you balls deep journey amd well done for finishing it off. Think we have all learned something from your big session.
Is it just me but the pump on its own makes that classic diesel engine noise.
The pump has changed the acoustic of the jeep. It sounds really nice. Not as sharp when you're sitting inside, bit duller.
Not got a f##cking clue what you were doing but i will watch and say yeah that's what I would have done 🤣👍🏻🏴
Mech pumps sound way different to common rails. That’s the noise you’re hearing
I mean, the exhaust sound is different along with the induction noise due to more fuel. I'm not sure if I misunderstood the first question as what you said is obvious the case also.
Just saying thats all. peace x
When I bleed my tractors injectors it can take like two hours. You need to get every bubble of air out of the pump, lines, injectors etc
I've not really had this much trouble before with bleeding fuel although the whole experience would have been much shorter if I had just turned the fuel screw and indexed it at the very start.
That being said at least I learned something.
OMG, hell of a job !
@WorkshoptoWilderness may I ask you how you unscrewed two of the three bolts of the pump? one easy, the one one the head side is impossible to reach, and the other one of the bottom, can't even see it. Any special/handmade tool ?
What did you used to remove the injectors without damaging the two small diesel return lines ? I used a huge long socket and given the length and force needed the socket slightly displaces and damaged it.
For the nut close to the head, I used a flat head screwdriver and a hammer to tap it loose. I also used the same method to tighten it. Underneath the pump required removal of the battery and alternator. Initially, when setting up the pump, this one was left snug until I was happy with the timing. I also test drove the pump without this bolt tightened.
The injectors are an absolute pain in the ass and require super human strength to loosen. I ground the face of a 28mm long socket originally so that it would have maximum engagement without the small taper at the lip of the socket. I removed the valve cover also.
The two return nipples didn't seem to be an issue, even now that it's on a 27mm.
Thank you! It was a lot of work. I just have to keep an eye on everything now.
@@WorkshoptoWilderness Thanks a ton for your kind reply.
PumpOhhh man, now it makes sense how you were able to unscrew that pump evil bolt.
Really smart grinding the face of the socket to maximize surface contact, I will do that as well !!
I used wurth Boltex to aid on removing the injectors. Next time I will try with a long 28mm socket and a powerful impact driver. When making some super human strenght to loosen, is easy to twist the socket and destroy everything. This is caused because the injector has a relatively small surface contact area against the socket. I also removed the valve cover (it MUST be done), and slightly bent the sides of the heads with the socket, that later I had to file and polish.
Another trick that helped me a lot to unscrew the two parts injector, is to moderately hit them with a hammer all around the threads. It helped a LOT to unfreeze them afterwards with the bench vise. Fire may be needed by I would at first avoid it because metal is relatively thin and can bend with the strokes. Piece of cake unscrewing them after that.
If it ain't broke don't fix ,someone said
Hi Mike,,love your vid's ,, also going to do the manual pump but no video on CZcams,, you mentioned somone helped you from UK, can you send me the link plz,,I'm from South Africa
Hey. Nobody helped me from the UK. Someone sold me with the pump from the Netherlands.
Setting up the pump isn't difficult as it tells you in the manual how to set the timing and dial in the pump with a dial reader.
I have a video showing this.
The manual pumps just take time to tune in and configure after installation. You just have to drive it, test it, and get the timing close. Then, you can dial in the LGA at the top of the pump to configure boost response along with the fuel screw and idle screw.
If this feels a bit daunting, then I would get someone to instal it for you, although I don't think a regular mechanic would understand how to fine tune the pump.
@@WorkshoptoWilderness thanks Mike, appreciate,, I'll watch your video again, keep up posting
At 27:43, What's with the oil gauge diving down to almost nothing and you check gauges light coming on?
Its a broken sensor that I cannot find the original of anymore. I have an analogue gauge next to the EGT. There are few dead sensors now. The coolant level sensor and oil sensor along side the rear hatch sensor. I need to install my own coolant level sensor. The originals of these things just any easy to find anymore.
So the original fault on the new pump was the idler screw out of adjustment?
Yeah, and indexing. So there was no issue apart from the person doing the job.
@@WorkshoptoWildernesswell, not all of us are perfect. Even monkeys fall out of trees. Keep at it and you too will learn how to tie your shoes! 👍😉
If it aint broke, dont fix it.
Real good job Mike, like all yours mods and this is kind of what I would like to achieve with mine get more power in lower rpm so may take some ideas from this😊
Also few times in this video I've noticed that your rpm /speed are high but your engine oil pressure is fluctuating and dropping low, is all fine there?
All best from Scotland
It's a really good mod. I took it out for a drive today, and it was really nice to be able to spool the turbo up early. That oil sensor is dead. There's an analogue gauge next to the egt. I can't find the original sensor anywhere...
Thanks for watching
good work
What car is this pump from?
@gromt89 it came off of a chrysler Voyager 2.5td. It was also on the alpha romeo I think.
Any plans for a M57 swap? I can see it coming!
I've toyed with the idea, but it's not easy to do in Sweden. I personally really like this engine. It's probably up around 180hp now. It's rebuildable and mechanical, and I have everything I need to keep it going for another 20/30 years. In that time, diesels will be banned anyway. The m57 is an excellent engine, but it's another shit storm of work, money, and bullshit.
@@WorkshoptoWilderness yes, I’m in that storm right now. I’m Building the BMW as a plan B but my Vm refuses to die. Thanks for sharing your build. It’s an inspiration for us in Aus with the Xj diesels that are so underrated
I will probably pick up an m57 one day if I find something, and it's right time right, place kind of thing. Maybe I can put on the engine stand as a possible father son project.
I just really love my vm, though despite what anyone says.
Anyone else notice the zero oil pressure? I assume it's a glitch?
His sensor is dead, he has an analogue gauge as he can't find an original sensor. It's all good.
Sorry Mike but I stopped watching. Being forced to watch before, during and after your video 2 minute blocks of advertising about some stupid Chinese computer game is more than I can bear.
There is one advert insert at the start and one at the end. That's all there is. Perhaps the AI knows you fucking love Chinese computer games.

You just have to watch like 10 seconds then you can skip......🤷♂️
