Expect the unexpected in the desert. We revisit our second home at the Mt Dare Hotel. This time, we helped out the workshop for 2 weeks during the busy Finke Desert Race of 2024.
Did we fix your car and try to get you out of trouble? There were many more recoveries and broken vehicles that did not come through the workshop!
We experienced rainfall, closed roads, the first State of Origin game (just) and muddy broken cars.
The Mt Dare Hotel is in Outback South Australia on the western edge of the Simpson Desert. Experience it for yourself. Dare to Prepare.

You were and are two of the nicest people anyone could ever hope to meet. Add to that you are so capable and helpful. You saved our group trip, and we're extremely greatful to you both for doing so. It was also super interesting to learn you lead group trips and provide tracks and content to Hema. What a couple of understated Aussie champions. I hope you have great travel adventures after Mt. Dare in your Hilux. I hope you enjoyed the beer. Cheers, Craig (white Prado 150 - brake pads and me cleaning the residual mud of the inside of my Methods with the shop brush).
This is awesome!
I'm a 30 yr old female who is tiny and just started a heavy diesel mechanic apprenticeship in Sydney, so it's good inspiration seeing another female who knows her stuff! Both of you are legends 😁
Go girl!😊😊
"A good indicator that the alternator is knackered is mud on the roof"...... lol, classic.
Rev up & take battery lead orf
I can't believe anyone would get that far and decide it's a good time to do checks and servicing that should be done at home
yeah but thats easy to say you dont always get a choice in when or why something lets go, you could do a service then the next day something lets go or leks. out there even more so completely different story
Hey Isabella. I’ve been a mechanic for 40 years on the north coast of nsw we got parts delivered twice a day ,I can only imagine your frustration having to wait for a part to finish a job. Having the passion is the only way to keep going as mechanic, well that’s what I found anyway. Good on you guys well done.
Crossed the Simpson in 1995 hilux in group broke all leaf springs Rhonda and husband ran MtDare then gave us access to workshop rebuilt leaf packs form graveyard of wrecks awesome hospitality we then did Madigans line hilux gave continual problems but spares got him out of desert this channel will go off awesome❤
What a story mate! Sometimes the breakages make the best stories, and we're glad you made it across the Madigan in one piece, regardless of the continual problems 😊
Good to see a lady on the tools looks like a good team
Been working at Mt dare for 2 weeks now, mainly in the workshop etc, it's definitely an adventure everyday hey 🤣🤣.
Isabelle is an absolute star. In fact you’re both fabulous.
Great job guys , your bloody gems. If only city mechanics worked like this, no fuss just get in and get it done
It’s nice to be young my old knees were hurting just watching 😂a good can do attitude nice to see 👍😊 really impressed ✅
As an old Ex mechanic, I can't agree more,my back was feeling it just watching
An out back mechanic any day thanks!! Good stuff! 👍
From an old fella in London I envy your freedom keep loving and keep living. All the best 👍 Kenny
Hahaha hey Kenny I have just watched this video I’m in London just off commercial road and I live in South Australia been an engineer for over 35 years both uk and Aus originally motor trade then aerospace and I can say ya need good bush mechanics and a outside the box attitude, traveled most of Aus and would never move back to England full time!come over n try it out 🤟🍻
Hello from across the Pacific (the West Coast of the U.S.) Just coming to your channel (from a post in the r/videos sub-Reddit), I can already tell I'm gonna be obsessed with this channel!
I got a million questions I'd love to ask you both... maybe a video idea would be to do a Top Ten (or whatever number) of bits of advice you have for folks based off of your repair experiences at Mt. Dare (carrying spares of specific things, lowering your PSI, etc.)?
I know guys who dont know what a spanner is for, so its nice to see a woman who knows her stuff.
This woman knows her stuff very well i use to work with her, i would rather a woman work on my vehicle than a bloke who doesn't care :) i know some very good female techs and males too :)😃
Good to see what happens remote.
Brought back so happy memories of our several Simpson Desert crossings -Adelaide to Dalhousie and return, both in the dry and the wet, through the 80’s. Had a 1985 Troopie 11 seater brand new with all the extras, one of 10 that came out as a special edition, still got it and getting close to 200k going strong and never let me down. Too old to do those trips now at mid 80’s and just recovering from a 4th back surgery. Did all those many 4WD expeditions speed the wear and tear on me instead of Troopie? Fantastic times. Thanks for sharing your as it happens video-I know all about it and how to be prepared. Greetings from Tasmania Australia 👍😁🇦🇺🦘
@ShevillMathers Haha as an owner of many 40 series lol it's the 40s that cause the body. I'm sure I've left a part of my back in each one
FANTASTIC VIDEO......MORE..MORE...MORE. That was awesome
Passed through mt dare many times , retired mechanic so i love what you do and where you havechosen to do it .new subscriber , cheers guys
I can see this channel taking off. This feels fully authentic and gives such a great insight into shoplife in the outback, or similar remote setting
I lived in WA Outback abou 12 years back, four hours north east of Kal. We had to make do with what was available cos spare parts was four hours away at Kal. The local tip was known as Mitre 11 cos our first port of call was the tip when in need of parts or bits and pieces. Had a Landrover with a 186 holden six cylinder on the cattle station. No spark, after examination, found it had an aftermarket contactless system on the engine which was producing no spark. Me and my mate visited the local tip. There was a Kingswood HZ with a 202 six cylinder engine, we removed the whole distributor and put it on the 186, Voila, spark and the engine started! Saved us a day driving to Kal for replacement parts and returning.
No shortage of work, if you see how city slickers drive on rough roads, its just utter equipment carnage. Up at Cape York, my dad saw this old guy with a new landcruiser, who had driven it so hard on the rough, the engine bay firewall was cracked clean through from one side to the other, utterly destroyed.
You two work as a great team and help people mechanical problems in the out back.Great video hop to see some mor real soon.💪💪💪
First time running across your channel bloody great content and subscribed 5 minutes in.
G'day guys from tassie.
Bloody awesome you guys, really put a smile on my face watching you both go hard and get shit done, top entertainment…..keep it coming
What a team, great video.
I suggest a concrete pad with its own washer and it will need its own water supply + big sign “wash before workshop” I guess the short comings of that plan would be water supply. One day I might make it. What sort of fuel supply do people need to cross the Simpson, I had a friend many years ago that took a 200 L drum for the canning and filled up about half way. Loved the video. I think more people might travel, just to get a decent service.
Perfect to see lug nuts done to speck rather than a guess like 90% of places do and over tighten the buggers sometimes.
Now that there are 'two' mechanics there you mean. Top job Isabelle & Jeremy. Love the repairs content and basically any video footage you can fit in.
I agree you two are an epic team..loved the videos .
Good on ya kids. It is not where you do the work but how you go about it. Looks like you do things correctly without being pretentious. They were all lucky to have you two there.
One of the best videos I have seen (and watched from start to finish) in a long time. Subscribed
What a Great Video. The day in the life of the outback workshop. Some you can fix others you can't. Tyres, Brakes, and Servicing all part of the job.
Thanks! That's exactly right, we can only give it a good go, and if we can't that's what a recovery truck is for.
@@LapsofMaps gotta love a Mog!
@@LapsofMaps bt 50. or any ifs twin cab ute. are not, 4x4rs.. the chassis is too thin, all the weight is too far back.. people are stoopid.. mates 80 series. blew out the rad support. the steel is like 1/4mm. if that. then he twisted the brkts off the diff, . ill keep my f100 & s/duty. jap 4x4rs are like jeeps, buy it, then fix it.. the bumper on my s/duty is thicker than that chassis.. plus, cv,s are bs.. people with f100,s , think the 100 means 1ton, there 1/4 ton. there built to carry 12 x 24 sheets.. or bails of hey.. my s/duty is the 4.2tdi. 700nm. tows 4.5t in 5th up hill.8t all up.. no issues.. telecom use toyotas, never use 5th..
@@LapsofMaps so, toyota put the alt where the starter should go, starter in valley,?, why.. & used 1950 rear diffs instead of 200 series diffs, why i dont buy toyota..or prado, or anything with a computer.
@@LapsofMaps land crusiers are not strong. there gutless & all the mechanicals are stuk in the 50,s. especially the 10 part hubs, & cv bs.. 100 kw, nothing will break, no guts.. i hate cv,s. but, just bought a gu nissan, why, because toyotas use there parts.. but still a yank 4x4 fan, allways will be.. nissan have a trans brake, & f100 style radius rods, plus, plus..& bit longer wheel base, plus.. still gutless..
Real cool guys, when I was a truck driver on the local council, we had ex-Army guys come and test our driving for a day. They wanted me to skip gears and just use the brakes to stop, don't go back through the gears this was a tad silly to me brake drums wear out and cost a lot of money to replace. Gear boxes can handle a lot of changes. Great job you guys.
Nice work folks, seems these modern vehicles a lot more complex than the old stuff I worked with on the Cape many years ago - still the same problems, but harder to fix, lol. Thanks for sharing. I enjoyed it so subscribed.
Nicely Done, did the Simpson in 1985 and again in 1987, no Mt Dare pub or workshop back then but was well prepared 6 MQ patrols and a short wheelbase Gruiser in 85 and 4 MQ,s in 86.
Well how much fun was that??? Loved your show. I was stuck in Katherine in 72 , waiting on vw kombi parts. Great expirence- got a motor off a crash and mad it to Darwin!! Had an old Holden needing motor mounts-- found an abandon roll over and didn't even have to lay on the ground/
Thanks for a good honest review of the not so fun times traveling, i laughed so much and i almost cried laughing at the diesel heater, not due to your miss fortunes but i can relate so much to almost all them experiences, and you are 100% right at the time things feel like they cant get any worse! But as time passes you look back and laugh, 6 years on from our trip(wife 3 kids and i) something will trigger our memory and we will make a little one liner joke that takes us back! 😂😂
What a great video. You could work on my car any time. Thanks for your efforts.
Outback WA - most popular vehicle by far is Landcruiser. Even the mines use Landcruisers. Parts readily available new or used!
Always go with the bush mechanic and the job will get you to where you need to be
Great job. Now you should be enjoying a cold beer .. 🇬🇧
Nice work guys, thanks.
Great work, doesn't matter where you are a good knowledgeable mechanic is all you need
Alternator on the 79s the brushes get mud and stick open we do on car pull them out clean and good to go do about 6 a week
Absolute legends who know their stuff……
That was really interesting. Nice to sae two mechanics who do exactly what is needed and do it properly. Keep up the good work.
And no Toyota is not the band it use to be.
Well I think you guys are Awesome , you both do a Very good job , and yes I would come to you , ( if I can't fix it my self ) 🤠
Very impressive. Both your expertise and knowledge in completing repairs.
Any workshop should be proud to have you both as team members.
Keep up the great work.
Stumbled across you guys and this is great.
If you dip the oil on my 1HDFTE after it has been going it will be off the stick. Check it tomorrow before you start it, it is perfect. It doesn’t use oil, never has in its 300,000 km, 10 litres comes out of it every time. The bloke who broke his chassis found out the hard way that airbags are not designed to overcome overloading. The springs were probably perfect because they had no weight on them. I would never blow an air filter out, you are very likely to blow a hole in it. A diesel will start to run hot when the filter is getting clogged. Good show, you got a lot of people out of trouble in a very remote location. Jeff.
If I had to get something done on my bt50, it would be a pleasure to have you two fix it, good work guy's hope to see more of you in the future 👏 👍
Great attitude towards your work. Good job your doing out there! Would be nice to meet you both but just to say hi, without needing any work! Thanks
Well done guys. Dirt bikes are more where my knowledge base lies. 4wd repair I throw it to people that know what their doing.
Love this video, I think you should be there all the time😉😉😉, this video must be so popular to pop up into my feed… good luck
Great work, just came across your video. Went to big red bash two hrs ago, that was as close as I got to Mt Dare, but would love to cross the Simpson one day. Keep up the good work. Maybe I should go back to mechanics and work with you guys out there
From one engineer to two others great work guys keeping them girls rolling 💪🇦🇺🤠
We are only mechanics, not engineers but cheers mate 😅
If you girls have great posture, and dont overexert do it smart not hard your bodys will last years more
Tip for when you don't have a tom thumb pump - run a bit of hose from your fluid container into whatever you're filling/transferring to, then put you hand covering the lid of the fluid container and use compressor to blow air into it - it'll force the fluid through the hose.
There you go, top tip, thank you!!!
Wow, you guys are great. You can work on my ute anytime. Just goes to show the wide variety of breaks you come across out West. Good luck, good times.
Well done both of you. A great dynamic and I am sure everyone appreciates the extra effort at that time of year.
We to live and play in the bush and I'm enjoying your clips and had to google Finke Desert Race thinking it might be horses or camels but no the bikes and buggies look like a lot more fun.
Guys can I say impressive, you are great together and what you have to share is engaging informative and entertaining. My takeaway is maintenance and not just servicing there is a large gap in this particular area currently once upon a time your mechanic was a family friend who was a custodian for your safety and your vehicles maintenance not a franchised wealth creation system owned by a trust or corporation minimising taxation. Sorry, love your work keep doing what you do
Fantastic work lots of maintenance keeping you busy
Great stuff , you are the real deal , can work and talk at the same time.🇦🇺✅️😉
Awesome team. Great to know there is a couple of experts if help is required.
Back in about 1984, my family were bringing two campers down from the Alice. Can't remember what happened, but we broke down at Mt Dare! Stuck there for a few hours while they fixed the issue. Glad to see the place is still going. Essential service.
You had me at Outback Mechanic, not gonna lie. The rest was pure pleasure.
Most interesting and educational
Awesome content, love it! So honest and informative. I would have no issue with you guys working on my car at all
I’ve watched all your travels and enjoyed the can do attitude and adventurous spirit. It’s been a pleasure to be along for the ride. Thank you to you both for the entertainment along with practical lessons. Enjoy your travels. From Macca
Now that's a power couple, good on ya 👍👊❤
You guys should do a list of failures for like an 80 series and what to take in parts for the simpson
Fantastic channel I love it
Great video, it might be worth noting that all wheel bearings must be set with a certain amount of end play. Timken has a good spec process online. That trailer you did would probably be 2 to 3 thou. Regards
Great video and commentary. Hope to see more of your videos. Well done.
Great job y'all
Your are hard workers 👍
You guys are beast's. Inspiration travelling/working life. The people who had you both work on their cars are so lucky you were in Dare.
Only two weeks, I am quite sure you could spend the rest of your lives in that workshop. Off road vehicles are a different challenge to on highway vehicles. Safe travels.
That was a very interesting video. Watched it from start to finish. Nice work.
Awesome, thank you!
The snapped chassis was a common failure in the highlands of PNG. This was in the old very rigid leaf spring days. They would snap just behind the cab. Over loading a principle fault but also using high tensile steel for chassis. Would stress harden and snap.
We plated a lot.
Awesome team I’ll need you to fix my car after I stuff up my attempt at fixing it
Learnt some great tips from you 2 outback mechanics
Really interesting to see the different scopes of work that come through, how you get the job done and get people back on their travels👍
Very entertaining! Great video!
First time I've seen you, enjoyed every minute and look forward to another episode your both great Ausy's. Regards Graeme
Read the comments and I Agree, so nothing more to say. Except Great video loved it.
yes air bags can be a contributing factor but the main reason for a snapped chassis is to much weight behind the axle (can’t understand how people can’t work that one out)
Yea..that’s why they got the bags to disguise it..
@@ianwatson3315 they’d use bags to level it but people over inflate them and that’s where the problem starts with cracked chassis
True bro, there only meant to assist, not take over
@@andrewmorrison8394 that’s the best way to describe how they work thanks
just discovered this channel. it’s so fricken awesome.
such great mechanics. so nice people.
Doesn't matter where they are I always prefer someone who knows what they're doing and who cares working on my gear. I avoid dealerships like the plague. Good to see two mechanics working so well together.
We're a couple so you'd hope we would work well together!
GREAT WORK GUYS!!💥💪
SHINE BRIGHT!!💥🙌👊💜
Great guys, I must say watching you guys was quit amazing. So well done 🇦🇺WA🤗🤗
Good job guys love watching your work keep up the good work
Just left this place today, didn't realise it was you guys. Awesome place to visit.
Im well impressed with your level ,of professionalism, the right tools ,for the right job.
Having been on remote properties, in QLD, its amazing how often "Bunnings" comes in handy .
I just found this channel randomly. Absolutely enjoyed this video. Fascinating content.
I really enjoyed this, great work!
Good stuff. Cheers n beers
Awesome jobs well done
what great couple to watch .best show to watch on youtube
So awesome guys love an out Bush remote mechanics shop. You guys are true legends and saviours of all them Tourists.
Absolutely love you guys using a Torque wrench on the wheel nuts.
City folk take note of that, instead of rattling the wheel nuts rock tight.
