    You should drill out the internal restrictor port on the XJ high pressure coupler. If you look at the inside of the WJ coupler, it's a much larger diameter than the XJ coupler. The restrictor on the XJ coupler can be safely drilled out to match the WJ coupler's internal diameter for even better flow.
    Also, heater hose isn't oil or pressure resistant since it's designed for coolant vs hydraulic fluid. 1/2" transmission cooler hose is a much better application for this. Power steering fluid won't break down trans cooler hose and it will withstand up to 400psi.

      After I did the Durango steering box upgrade, i have seen that it may not be a true upgrade, I have been very happy with mine, but supposedly it has bronze bushings instead of roller bearings for the sector shaft. Also, I found a minimal loss in turning angle at full turn but that isn't really an issue for me. The tires rubbed the LCAs a little at full turn, so that was almost a plus. Just wanted to mention what I found with my install. There is a lot of information online.

    Thank you for this extremely helpful video! I successfully performed this swap a month ago on my XJ, and also replaced the box with a new BlueTop. It turns like butter. HOWEVER, I seem to have lost all return-to-center. I did the fitting drill out, but am not running hydro assist. Could this be the problem with the no-return-to-center? I’m thinking of going back to the pick-apart and nabbing another XJ fitting to see if the restriction or lack of with the WJ pump is the reason for the centering issue.

      Yes but is the v8 crank pulley the same size as the i6. I know ford used the same pump for several vehicles and pulleys were matched. That way pressure and flow were good at idle and wouldn’t over heat at high rpm’s.
      But if you pump was shot just a new pump might be a huge difference

    • @wjonthetrail
      @wjonthetrail Před rokem +2

      You can drill the hole a little bigger but be careful not too much or you will lose your pressure
      Only increase by a 1/8” of a inch overall diameter
      But the best results will come from just adding a shim underneath that spring increasing the pressure a thin washer works wonders
      Then I would recommend a cooler be placed in line
      As you will be working the pump harder creating more heat
      The cooler will help and give you a little more volume of oil to work with

      Do you have more details? What size shim and where to install? I'm using a 8 row transmission cooler for my power steering so I'm not worried about over heating the p/s fluid. I drive a manual. I driller my p/s pressure line out just marginally so it flows better but better steering when bound up comes from higher pressure, not flow.

    • @wjonthetrail
      @wjonthetrail Před rokem +2

      @@lol123321123321 to increase your pressure on any pump
      You add more pressure to the bypass or relief valve
      Some have different sizes spring to use
      Others have a screw and lock nut ware you lose the lock nut and turn the screw in compressing the spring to the desired pressure
      For steering pump they have a spring with different thickness of washers or shims
      But if you are adding a hydraulic cylinder to your system a little more volume will help
      But pressure is the key
      It’s the difference in turning your wheel with your fingers or both hands

      The 1999-2000 WJ has a mechanical radiator fan. The pump you want is from a 2001-2004 V8 Grand Cherokee, which has the hydraulic radiator fan.

  • @DJKittrell

    Did you use the standard 3/8-16 bolt that comes with most puller kits to install the pulley? I cannot get it to thread in for the life of me. It threads into the XJ pump no problem. I even happen to have a 2000 WJ in the garage and it won’t thread into that ps pump either. I am stumped.

    • @nextweeksadventure
      @nextweeksadventure  Před rokem

      So what I did was screw in one of the tiny adapters into the pump then screw the larger stud with the end for your wrench over the top of the smaller one. Then you screw the "nut" looking piece all the way down till it hits the pulley. Slap a socket on it like the video making sure to use a screwdriver to stop the pulley from spinning and giver the beans to set the pulley. I hope this makes sense. If not drop me an email nextweeksadventure@gmail.com and I'll try to send pics to you.

      @@nextweeksadventure Thank you for the quick reply. I do know how to use the installer. The problem I am having is the "tiny adapter" you are referring to is typically a 3/8-16 bolt, which I have no issues screwing into the old XJ pump. However, it will not thread into the WJ pump I swapped in, nor the pump on my actual WJ. Do you recall what pulley kit you have? I can look it up to see if maybe it has more adapter sizes than the one I have. I've had no issues using it on an XJ or ZJ, but it just doesn't seem to want to work for the WJ.

      So the oem replacement pumps between the 92 and 98xj are different. I think its something to do with the pulley and you will need to swap them onto new pump. Maybe if you get the newer upgraded pump off the grand Cherokee v8 and also get a pulley from a 98xj I6 it would work?? I'm not 100% on it so keep your receipts in case it doesn't work out. If it was mine I'd start by verifying spark at the plug on cyl 3. And work my way back to distributor. Could be a bad plug gap or loose plug wire. If all checks ok now your checking injectors. Unhook injector wire harnesses at injectors and see if idle changes and check for correct voltage.

    Bolt on means take off and bolt new back on. Your title should say don't do this, there are better upgrades. I believe the Dodge Durango bolts right on and is a real upgrade and can run one ton axles. Look into that swap before committing to this one. I'm not sure but radiator hoses get soft when oil runs through them. I would check to make sure power steering fluid won't degrade the hose. Also I've ran 6 years on 33's with my stock power steering pump. It's my daily driver and rock crawler. Been to Moab many times, I've got 4.56 gears, lockers, the whole package. I have not needed to make the upgrade. When I do I'll look into the Durango upgrade. If it's not broke don't upgrade with iffy CZcams I need a video this week recommendations.

    • @nextweeksadventure
      @nextweeksadventure  Před 8 měsíci +2

      I believe the swap your talking about is the Durango gear box swap. The power steering pumps are not the same so thats not a option. The power steering pump swap I did is exactly what bolt on according to your definition is. Old broken unit off new better unit on. I also made a follow-up on my mistake with the hose. I make videos to show people ideas for their own projects and help them make decisions on what route they wish to take.
