- In an attempt to avoid buying a pricy purpose built exhaust system, I use some hillbilly engineering to make an inexpensive universal motorcycle muffler fit on my 701.

Sounds good Ben
Thanks!
Sounds good to me brother 👊 enjoy what makes you happy
Thanks man, I appreciate that!
Sounds great from my house. Thanks for the video.
Haha thanks!
Sounds good
Thanks! How's the Tenere treating you?
Sounds a whole lot better than the standard set up.
Yeah the stock pipe certainly leaves a lot to be desired!
It is kind of a shame to go full exhaust bodgery mode on a nice bike like the 701. They are money, but the Yosh R77 I have sounds awesome, no raspiness or harshness, just deep tone, and it is very well made. The can is cannon length which helps it's tone and it won't melt the stock rear turn signal. The Wings can is well made, less expensive, and probably the most popular choice for these bikes for those reasons.
While the full throttle settings are appropriate, these bikes are fueled extremely lean at part throttle for emissions, so mounting a slip on may sound better but it won't do much unless the lean fueling is addressed. That means even more cash spent to get a dongle to delete the O2 sensor and to richen the fueling via a Power Commander. Those mods with any suitable can turns it into low end and midrange monster. I don't have experience with it, but Wings sells a module that is relatively simple to install and supposed to address the lean fueling, which is likely causing a lot of the raspiness that you hear that the short can doesn't hide very well.
Back in the good old days with carbs, it was much cheaper and easier to get a Dynojet kit and drill CV slides, swap springs, needles and jets 😆
I've actually got a fuel dongle... I'm not sure exactly what it does other than making it run a little richer, but the pipe didn't seem to have any noticable effect on the ability to get the front tire off the ground. The sound on the other hand, did leave a lot to be desired. I pulled it off already haha.
I think you can simply disconnect the O2 sensor (at least I can on my 04 Dakar, bike runs fine only diagnostics shows the sensor is not connected). The bike then runs in open loop (to some hardcoded values), but anyway lambda is there mostly for low revs, on higher revs on some bikes it doesn't do anything. I tried to make the mixture richer by this (also runs crazy lean from factory, it's even overheating lol and yeah I checked the intake valve clearances they were fine) but it really doesn't do that much. What helped the most was to change the fuel injector for one with much higher flowrate (like 20% more). Now the bike can cruise (even combined with spirited riding to a degree) almost all day without the fan kicking on, yes!
Bought a used 2020 701 with an Yosh R77 and it does sound good. It has the spark arrester installed. The length, increased chamber size of can, helps with low end. And longer pipe keeps the exhaust and heat further from rider. The bike also has the fuel dongle. imho Prior to 2021 leaner Euro 5 emission bikes, a pcv is not required.
Deeper, not louder. That's what I want! Probably because I also play bass guitar.
Haha I don't play at all and I definitely agree!
Hey Swanky, looks like I’ll be picking up a 701 soon and I love the look of your taller windscreen. I don’t like the factory one at all- I believe you mentioned once it came off a Ktm Duke 690 or something like that. Would it be possible for you to find out the model/year or maybe the part # cast into the plastic? I would greatly appreciate it! 👍
Sounds like my z125 lol
LMAO 🤣
Did you do anything to the fueling on this bike? Thanks!
Do you have the link for windscreen and how did you install your Garmin ? - I like how its positioned. Thanks
I'm a function over form guy, losing too much back pressure steals the low end which I use a lot
Low end is definitely important! How have you been?!
I had one of those $30 slip ons from Amazon on my KTM 500. It looks just like that one. Mine didn't last very long. Something inside the can broke lose and rattles around.
Oh no haha 😂
Thank you for this, I wish it was that easy with the model I have, is from 2022 Euro 5 and the link is different. The only link pipe I found that would adapt is from Arrow and it costs double as the universal muffler, if you have any tip or where to find it for a decent price let me know plz :)
I saw those, too. I can't believe no one has come out with a better budget option???
I like my leovince but it might be louder.. different airbox and exhaust and it really barks when you get on it
Nice! I didn't know they made a kit for the 701.
16:14 ARROWS MATE
Haha, yeah I should really make the investment.
How are you liking the 701? Seriously debating selling my tenere 700 for one
I like it a lot actually. It definitely doesn't "feel" as nice as the Tenere. Yamaha quality is hard to beat though. You definitely feel like you're sitting ON a dirt bike, rather than IN an adventure bike. The 701 also rattles around a bit more... and has crap wind protection... but with a 14T front sprocket it'll smoke the Tenere off the line, as long as you can keep the front wheel down that is lol. It feels like you're riding an over powered mountain bike rather than a fat horse that'd snap your leg if it fell on your wrong... But would I trade it back if I could? Naa. The Tenere is an awesome bike, but I had my time with it and am happy trying something new!
is this fake exhaust bad for the engine? Do you have any modifications for this exhaust?
That pipe is just too small. Also, 690/701's are just loud when opened up in general. It sounds like you would like a Wings pipe.
Agreed!
Hope you don't always run such a cheap exhaust on a bike like this 😅
Haha naa, I pulled it off already.
@@SwankyCatProductions good xD the bike don't like an exhaust like that^^
A FmF pipe for KtM 450-500 will fit with a couple quick modifications
@@oom_701 why....?
@@cobe4so loose power because of misaligned backpressure waves
Sounds like lunch for my hillbilly klr 650.
😂
