They let the US networks butcher the program my adding laugh tracks because the network had so little faith in their audiences. A lot countries outside the US aired the show properly, without one. I've seen some people claim MASH has awkward pauses, but I think they're so used to laugh tracks that they forgot what natural acting looks like. It's not like Gilmore Girls where people spout dialogue back and forth a mile a minute. Nor is it like watching Friends with the audiences edited out where there's up to ten seconds of pauses between every line. Sometimes (and not all the time), MASH will have reactionary pauses because the characters know when something weird was said or has happened. You see in their faces and body language. Other times, there isn't any pauses, and the laugh track cuts over dialogue. The acting is natural.
