My old wood shop teacher would put M*A*S*H* on in the classroom, I took his classes as a repeat by accident, but managed to talk the counselor into letting me use it as a study hour. We talked hunting, fishing and watched M*A*S*H*. He actually passed shortly after I graduated. He was way young, hell of a teacher. Hell of a guy.
my dad was an army medic in korea in 52-53,and he said one of their doctors was a captain who had franks personality,but hawkeyes surgical brilliance.my dad said most of those doctors were pretty cool like hawkeye and trapper,they had a couple who were assholes like burns,and their c.o was a little like colonel potter,a strict but fair and affable officer who only cared that you did your job.but my dad said all those doctors were brilliant like hawkeye.
I didn't have a relative in Korea, but you can be assured that there were an army full of Burns, Winchesters, and Flaggs in every war. Luckily we had a few Hawkeyes, Hunnicutts, McIntyres and others to get our boys through the insanity, as well as the sadly overlooked O'Reilleys, Klingers and even Mulcahys.
My wife's favorite MASH quote - "I will not carry a gun, Frank. When I got thrown into this war I had a clear understanding with the Pentagon: no guns. I'll carry your books, I'll carry a torch, I'll carry a tune, I'll carry on, carry over, carry forward, Cary Grant, cash and carry, carry me back to Old Virginia, I'll even 'hari-kari' if you show me how, but I will not carry a gun!"
When I was a kid I just thought this was a fun prank, but now looking back I think it's the most reasonable response to a doctor who keeps waving a gun around a hospital like its the american flag
No, the reasonable response would be taking the gun away, ejecting the magazine, clearing the chamber, and then beating Frank over the head with it. This is a close second though.
I don't know if this was said in any episode but I heard somewhere that they always gave the gun to radar or clinger who would check it into the armory at camp which would require burns to wait around a while every time he got it out for everyone's safety.
@Bobbie Charles You have to consider the movie and television casts as entirely separate. Robert Duvall played Frank in the movie but Linville was Frank from the pilot episode of the series through season five. The only actors who crossed over from the movie to television were Gary Burghoff as the one and only Radar, and G. Wood reprising the role of Gen. Hamilton in the very first episodes of the series.
meltedplasticarmyguy so much respect to Mr. Linville. It takes a great actor to portray a character so universally despised as Frank. I wonder if there was ever personal repercussions to him for his character?
@@blamstam I'm not sure how people treated him in day-to-day, but I will say MASH was definitely his biggest role. His others were pretty small, so it seems possible that he ended up getting typecast, which is a shame. He did an amazing job, but it probably hurt to be known as a his slimeball character versus his real acting ability. May he rest in peace.

It wouldn't surprise me as it being to why the show went the way it did and became more dramatic, with Alda being one of the writers. Many believe that over time he became too much involved. As good as it made the show, he drew it further into being a drama about the fragility and how war is often more horrific. IMO, as good as it was, the comedy, particularly in the later seasons, was often used as comic relief and can often be viewed as a coping mechanism for the characters. Hawkeye perfectly displays this in his frank (pardon the pun) admission to Radar in "Fallen Idol", as well as the episode where he is bet on to go a full day without a wisecrack. The latter of these two shows how it is used to alleviate the dramatic moments, as it was originally a comedy. Now often being known as one of the first drama-comedies. I apologise for the full analysis. It is often a habit I have.
I'm a 15 year old that has been watching M*A*S*H for two years now, and it amazes me that not as many people know the show as I thought. It's my absolute favourite show, and I wish it was more popular nowadays. Unfortunately, that isn't the case. But at least there's still a great number of people who love and will remember it for a long time.

His best line was when after Margret started dated Punobscott. Frank chummies up to Pierce and Honeycutt. He tells them a nurse has an eye for him. Margret says, "Isn't she a little young for you?" Burns replies, "A little youth would be a nice change of pace" paraphrasing, I don't recall the actual lines

The first three seasons of MASH were the best! I love the other seasons as well, especially once Charles came along (He’s actually my favorite character. I wish he’d joined the show a lot sooner.) but the Blake/Trapper years were truly something special.
The show evolved and dropped a lot of the irreverent slapstick, along with the laugh track. It got sadder, more bittersweet, way more adult and complex. They all seemed so youthful those first three seasons, and so exhausted and exasperated afterwards.
In my country the show is without laughter track, so this seems so unreal. It is interesting that this show withou the laughter track is still so good Unlike friends or the Big Bang theory.
I bought the full series DVD, and you have a choice to mute the laugh track. If you notice, the longer the series went, they used the laugh track less and less.
Last of the summers wine, Mash, Dad’s Army, Faulty Towers and Monty Python will always be my favourite comedy shows. They all have there own thing and it makes me happy to watch them all over and over 🙂

I'm 28 ar old that has been watching M*A*S*H for 10 years now, and it amazes me that not as many people know the show as I thought. My father was a WW2 Navy vet who worked on A MASH unit on land in The South Pacific some where.He never wanted to talk about it had PTSD and nightmare s the rest of his life.He died before MASH came on tv. I don't think he would have liked it.But myself,since I never had to experience war,I enjoy watching it.Lucky for me I can see the satire and absurdity of things.
The very final gun joke hasn't been shown, but Frank puts both Hawkeye and Trapper under arrest, only for Frank to pull his gun out and find out its a gag gun with a flag that says bang. Either way the episode is still hilarious to this day 😂
It's funny how many actors primarily known for playing villains are/were very likeable people in real life. Larry Linville, Ronny Cox, Louise Fletcher, Kurtwood Smith, among others.
I love how even the general wasn't even taking Frank seriously at first and was placing bets on Charlie too. The only reason he gave Frank what he wanted was cuz Charlie got lucky one day and blew up the general's Jeep.
The last scene is the scene I always come back to when people on the MASH fan groups say "oh, the early years was just so silly, the later years are MUCH better". Which they objectively were not. The early seasons have a perfect blend of comedy and seriousness. In the last scene with the canon they have it all: Great acting, awesome jokes and laughter and seriousness (Hawkeye explaining the problem having a canon so close to the hsopital). In the later seasons this would have been handled with forced lines, tons of pathos and a hammer hiting the audience on the head while Alda explained that "war is hell".
the fact that someone somewhere said: "Hey, you know whatd make a good sitcom? A war hospital."
Don't forget that it was based on a hit movie that was based on a best-selling book...

My American DVD copies don’t have a laugh track either. I didn’t ever realise it until I watched this because I was always laughing myself

Cream rises to the top. It was an ensemble show but even in the movie, Hawkeye Pierce was central.

It's funny how many actors primarily known for playing villains are/were very likeable people in real life. Larry Linville, Ronny Cox, Louise Fletcher, Kurtwood Smith, among others.
Always loved the 5 o’clock Charlie episode.

I love how even the general wasn't even taking Frank seriously at first and was placing bets on Charlie too. The only reason he gave Frank what he wanted was cuz Charlie got lucky one day and blew up the general's Jeep.
A combination of flop sweat and malpractice make it difficult to see. God Trapper was hilarious. The dynamic just wasnt the same with BJ

I remember this episode
The last scene is the scene I always come back to when people on the MASH fan groups say "oh, the early years was just so silly, the later years are MUCH better". Which they objectively were not. The early seasons have a perfect blend of comedy and seriousness. In the last scene with the canon they have it all: Great acting, awesome jokes and laughter and seriousness (Hawkeye explaining the problem having a canon so close to the hsopital). In the later seasons this would have been handled with forced lines, tons of pathos and a hammer hiting the audience on the head while Alda explained that "war is hell".
