How to reset SRS light on 1998-2002 Honda ACCORD (J Series DIY)

- Resetting SRS light on 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002 Honda Accord:
(1) Locate MES Plug. It should be located near the driver's side fuse panel under the dash. The harness is yellow with two wires.
(2) Unplug the MES Plug.
(3) Insert one end of wire into MES Plug (one wire in each contact)
(4) Follow this sequence of shorting the other two leads of the wire/clip and turning the ignition to "on" (not accessory, not start)
-Short and hold the leads while you turn the ignition to on. The SRS Light will illuminate for a few seconds then go off.
-When the SRS Light goes off, unshort the wires. The SRS Light will come back on.
-Short and hold the wires again. The SRS Light will go off.
-When the SRS Light goes off, unshort the wires. The SRS Light will blink twice.
-Turn the ignition off.
-Start engine as normal. The SRS Light should illuminate for a couple of seconds as normal and then go off.
(4a) This series of shorting/unshorting needs to take place within a 4 second window of the SRS Light going on/off each time.

1. Short terminals, turn ignition on (not start), lights go out.
2. Disconnect and the light comes back on
3. Short and the light goes out
4. Disconnect, if the light blinks twice, done.
5. Remember to read entire video description next time. Thanks again.
Solution if you are by yourself.
1. Short the wires.
2. Turn ignition
3. wait 7 seconds and disconnect
4. reconnect after 2-3 seconds
5. Disconnect after 2 seconds and you are done!

I needed an extra person to look at the srs light while I was down below plugging the paper clip in and out...took 3 tries to get it right coz you had to be quick and coordinated with your helper...went straight for safety inspectiion after that and passed...im in VA...car was an 01 Accord 2dr

Very helpful! My SRS light came on after removing and reinstalling the instrument cluster. Going through the flow chart on Alldata, it was recommending replacing the OPDS unit. Then discovered a forum that said the light can come on when removing and reinstalling the cluster. In the forum, the gentleman said to jump the two wire, yellow connector, but there are two of them. I spent a good 10 minutes, trying to remove the bigger of the two, with no success. Your video showed me that it was actually the smaller one. Reset worked ! I didn’t jump them until after turning the key on. I found that having them already connected, before turning the key on, did not work, but when I turned the key on, and then jumped it, it worked perfectly. It was difficult poking the ends of the wire into the tiny pin holes. I cut a cotter pin in half and put the two pieces in the respective holes, then attached two alligator clipped jumper wires to each one.

Amazing. Worked first try. Thank you. My car failed inspection because of the SRS light being on constantly, and this was the solution. I recommend having a 2nd person watching the light while the 1st person is underneath performing the shorting on/off. Timing is important as the instructions say. 2002 honda accord.

I just reset my SRS light on my 2000 Honda Accord EX using this procedure. I used 2 conductor speaker wire and I stripped the ends from one end and inserted those ends into the MES connector. I then stripped the other ends and held them together while turning the key on. After second time, SRS blinked twice then went off. I have only driven about 16 miles, but the light is still off. Thank you!

Thanks. It did the trick! I had to unplug the three connectors to the speedometer to address another issue and that seemed to trigger the SRS light to come on.

If this trick did not work for you, try disconnecting BOTH + - battery posts for 10 munutes, important, do both... reconnect then try shorting trick again... Worked for me, goodluck.

Thanks! I could not see the SRS light when I used a paper clip (my head was under the dash), so I cut two lengths of electrical wire. I plugged each wire into the yellow socket and shorted the other ends (held wire ends together) and then unshorted them (disconnected the ends) as per the instructions.

I want to disable the airbags because of the recall on the steering wheel airbag on Honda 2000 Accord. They don't even have the parts to fix it right now. If I try to drive it, it may even kill me! Thanks a lot Honda!

So my srs light kicked on and I brought it to honda. They reset it and told me it was because of a bad seatbelt sensor. A couple days later it kicked back on. I'm just wondering if this actually affects anything in the event of an accident

Just asking, got myself an Accord Coupe CG and replaced all the fuses on the driver side, since then the SRS light won’t go off.
Tried this but the light will not go off after connecting/shorting thru the connector.
It does blinkt but fast for like 4/5 times then once slow.
Payed a shop to try to find the error using the OBD but they told me that the SRS Modul itself does not respond. Did I just totally destroyed my module by unplugging and plugging new fuses into?
That’s my first car and I really worked hard for the money, I even tried to find a new or used SRS Modul just in case but it seems like there’s is no available. I also have a P1607 and a MIL on the dash that what my trusted shop said it’s probably a broken ECU.
As I’ve said, I’ve worked my ass off for about 2 years until I had the money to buy me one of the best looking cars out there. I’m just scared that I’ve lost about 5 grands on the car without even mentioning the repairs that were already done…

I tried this multiple times and it did not work. I tried it with a paper clip as you showed in the video and with some speaker wire, both did not work. I don’t know if it’s something at the end that I’m doing wrong, but after I turn the ignition off and turn it back on, the light stays on.

Why are you saying ''Connect'' - ''Disconnect'' -''Connect'' - ''Disconnect'' while the ignition is on and the SRS light is flashing.
Were you removing that clip each time, or are you just saying connect-disconnect-connect-disconnect as the SRS light is flashing...
Yes, I was disconnecting two pieces of clip when I said “disconnect”
@@IgorKadulenkov. Igor, thank you for getting back with me. I was having a bad day so if I sounded upset with you I apologize for that. I was upset because under the dashboard of the 98 Accord I was working on, there happened to be 2 yellow plugs but both of them were plugged into a small panel. After watching 2 or 3 more video's on this, it turned out that the smaller of the 2 yellow plug is the one I have to unplug in order to use the paperclip to jump it. Hey Monty, no problem. Yes, sometimes this connector is plugged to the panel. In my case it was just hanging under the dash

With my 2001 Honda Accord the srs turns on and turns off and it shuts off the radio and comes back on a second later
Question do u connect the sts socket back in or leave it disconnected after ur reset it
it doesn't matter, either way. It's not intended to be connect to anything. If it's connected to a panel, it's a blank connector
it worked... but as soon as i click my seatbelt in it goes back on, the seatbelt sensor is working just fine so im confused, what could be the issue?
I guess I'm going to need a new switch. I cleaned mine about 9 months ago and the light has stayed off... Until now. I will try cleaning it again, but I don't think it will help cause I know the switch isn't dirty.
Not big on wires😅, you did put that u shaped wire in the male side of the yellow connector? Pull the wire after the 1rst light goes out?

Didn't work for me, after shorting the second time (step 4 third dash,-Short and hold the wires again. The SRS Light will go off. ) within 4 seconds the light did not go back out.

+jicm22 Hi, I myself had to repeat the procedure for like 12 times before it worked. I almost gave up. But if you do everything correctly and it's still on, i would assume you have a problem with your SRS system. I would go check that with a scanner at a dealer. You may have problems with one of the components of SRS system. Could be inflator, belt buckle or something else.
I bought the appropriate Honda MES connector, but it just doesn't want to blink twice. The first two steps were completed. What else could be the problem? I heard sensors could also be responsible so I'll be changing the only ones that's giving me problems, the O2 sensors. But what are other possibilities?
+Eva Sidera I am sorry Eva, i have limited knowledge about the other possible causes. My Honda SRS light was caused by disconnecting the module in passenger seat. But i have to say that i tried at least 12-15 times before i was actually able to reset it. I would recommend asking someone, who has a proper SRS system analyzer, to connect to your car and find out what the problem is before you start replacing the things.
Igor Kadulenkov Igor, I truly believe it's the module on my passenger seat because the side bag light turns on when someone sits there. I passed my DMV inspection so Im in no hurry to fix it. But it's definitely worth looking at. You gave me some idea so thanks for the response!

It's not working for me, but there is a Honda recall cause of passenger airbags.
I followed all the instructions and it didnt work my srs light blinks 2 times turns off then turns back on.
One of the components in your srs system may be malfunctioning, I would take the car to a service with a scanner

Awesome, my srs light came on because I drive delivery and leave my passenger seat belt buckled to tuck food behind. The computer thinks theres a malfunction because the weight sensore sees Noone and yet the belt is always saying someone is there
Really really useful in my case because leaving that belt buckled is gonna cut the light back on about every 300 starts, but I'd rather that than Drinks and sauces all over the car

My srs fault code turns on time to time.At first (after buying this car) we deleted the fault code with a diag inst. and it kept 5 month long but the light lit again.We deleted and unfortunately it came on again.I'll try to this method cause it may be only a contact fault.I dont think that it is a general error.Anyone knows why this error code comes again and again?What couses this problem? When this reset method works I'll let U know.
+attila kohári Hello, it may be the belt buckle. If so, Honda will replace for free, there's a lifetime warranty on them. You can determine the exact reason by using a diagnostic tool
Hello Igor,I did not use the belt when it came on.Diag tool says malfunktion in srs system.Thats all.Dont know what component in srs system wrong is.Probably in main srs control box.Later l will try your method and write.

Amrinder Gill Hey, i am sorry to hear that. If you did everything correctly and it reappeared right after reset, i would suppose you have a more serious problem with SRS system. Maybe one of the modules got faulty ? I would recommend going to a shop and read SRS error.
