- Few skaters have had careers filled with more rumors, speculation and third-hand accounts than Tiffany Chin. As the first Asian-American to win the United States Figure Skating Championships, Tiffany Chin broke ground while leading a cross-cultural revolution in the sport. In part one of our interview with Tiffany Chin, we discuss her beginnings in the sport, the legends she trained with, her relationship with her mother and the impact her Chinese-American upbringing had on her career.

Felt sorry for her dealing with her overbearing tiger mom
This interview feels so different from the others. Tiffany seemed really genuine yet wanted to give the most complete and well thought out answer. I kind of love that.
30:28 "My childhood allowed me to develop my ...inner critic."
Girl, same.
It's nice to see Tiffany talking and smiling....she didn't dare do that at the rink. I used to love watching her train in San Diego when I was a young, envious skater. I never forgot seeing her mother smack her behind to correct her, and I thought, "Wow, that's extreme!" But I was secretly envious that my parents didn't push me, or invest in me going further with my skating. I knew she would go somewhere and I'm glad for her. It would have been nice to see her enjoying her training, or even smile and mingle with "the commoners" a bit, but you have to be serious about it to get ahead. Just the nature of the beast. Still, I hoped she enjoyed her training, even if she never smiled!
Love this interview with Tiffany!! Great to have someone like Tiffany who makes the Asians and the Americans proud. she learned from both cultures and brought out the best of them. And love the way she speaks as well.
Tiffany always had the best program endings...splits, double axel, running camels, Arabian, illusions, scratch spin....perfectly to the music.
This is such a fantastic interview, and with Tiffany Chin - I've have for so long wondered who she became. I love that things start very professionally, with scripted questions clearly scripted and Tiffany's responses with polite energy. And about halfway through, we feel the direction change just a bit toward the elephant in the room for those of us who watched in horror at the bio-clip of Tiffany's mother's behavior. And then there was the 'misalignment' in her body that caused her to have to restart her skating technique (which didn't come up here but was a definite 'thing' at the time.) And when David goes there with the cultural question, and Tiffany struggles to grasp it, and David persists and Tiffany continues to struggle to connect the dots, I just kept thinking 'This is so good. It's not challenging, it's questioning with curiosity, that the interviewee can then take time to consider as they respond.' And Tiffany did. And then delivered what I could have only hoped to hear from her, after all that 'appeared' to have transpired before, as a strong, smart, caring, lovely woman with such deep insight and wisdom. Thanks guys, really fine job.
I enjoy Tiffany Chin very much but this is not my favorite interview of the "series". Tiffany seems like a wonderful person - she is very well spoken, sweet and insightful. However, I feel like she tried too hard to be diplomatic or to give the right answers. Also, Jenny and Dave were really trying to get the "'scoop" from Tiffany and I could see why. This could have been a wild interview with perhaps some good "scoops" (without having to trash talk her mom). But Tiffany doesn't really answer the questions directly. Sometimes her answers are fluffy but no substance. It seems like at times Jenny and Dave are on different pages than Tiffany (contrasted to their other interviews, like Debi, Elaine or Linda where there's more of a toss and catch situation). I would have liked to hear more about her Worlds experiences, those were only touched on briefly. I guess this interview was like a mirror of Tiffany's career to me. Please don't think this is a negative comment toward Tiffany because she is AMAZING and a truly BEAUTIFUL SKATER! I wish her amateur career could have been longer. We love our "80s China Doll".
I've been loyal follower of FS for 20 yrs now and yet I seldom heard of Tiffany Chin.
Well spoken intelligent and a nice person.
She is never going to fully admit that her mother participated in the downfall of her career. Logically speaking, how can a non-skater(Marjorie) interfere in the coaching process especially when you consider that they (Caroll&Chin)were very successful as a team. On top of that how can you expect progression in Tiffany's skating by taking her off training to get magical "therapy" for a nondescript "disorder".
Ms. Chin is very well spoken; I amazed how much can be asked by a skater who never made the top - she quit. But she has so much success in her own way -- 4th at the Olympics, national title and two world bronze medals. Still her mother made some many comments that were not positively construed - like what is the point if you aren't going to work hard or whatever out in public. Why spend good money...so old Chinese if you don't know the culture.
We will post part two later this evening.
when will part II be up?
Jennifer, do you still skate anywhere? I miss seeing you skate, one of the prettiest skaters on the ice ever.
Young Tiffany looks like young Midori Ito. Similar body shape, very similar hair. Could be twins.....wow.
38:55. “Oh yeah!” Tiffany’s confirmation that her mother was a tiger mom who couldn’t get along with the coaches.
She really came off unlikeable
