Night Lords are interesting because they kind of really suck at the actual job of being a space marine. Like, the way they operate, why even bother making most of them supersoldiers?
Except Sevatar; It's almost like 95% of the legion's actual martial skill got crammed into him and him alone.

    • @Mikazuchireborn
      @Mikazuchireborn Před 4 dny +32

Definitely a combination of Night Lord battle doctrine, Gendor Skraivok deliberately recruiting kids who have no business becoming Space Marines, and Konrad inability/unwillingness to fix things.
If Night Lords were fighting the kind of battles the others legions were doing at the time (massive wars against mighty empires), I feel a lot of those inferior Marines would have been filtered out. You don't need to be superhuman in order to brutalize a bunch of terrified human civvies, but it definitely helps.

I like the Night Lords for the same reason I like Frank Horrigan. In an era where a lot of popular IPs are obsessed with trying to make sympathetic villains, it's cathartic to see unrepentant war criminals instead.
Also, like you said, they don't fight like space marines and, funny enough, despite being the most brutal chapter, they probably killed the least. Instead of warring with entire planets, they scare planets into compliance.
In other words, them being evil doesn't unskin your wife and kids.

I can say...because they are oddly one of the most human space marine legions. We can thank the trilogy really. It does give us a legion where we have a tragic nature to it. As we can look on Konrad, who just needed a hug.
The other legions needed daemons and gods to turn them evil, Night Lords just are. They were practically raised to be so. Yet, they are self-aware of it. They do not lie to themselves of their nature. And again, because of the trilogy, we can see that they are more than this. Be it Talos, Uzas, or even the warsage...there is simply humanity still within them that can be seen through the flayed skin and general horror, they are just large children that want to be loved by their mentally ill father.

Like just think, if you took a child that was forced through barbaric trials by combat that kill 99% of grown men and gave them literal superhuman abilities and conditioning to where they basically only fully understand combat you're likely not gonna get the philosophical Blood Angels, reasonable Ultramarines, or caring Salamanders, you're probably gonna end up with the opportunistic, violence-driven, and power-obsessed Night Lords.

Basically if you have a job where you know what will happen, how things will play out, and you get punished for doing your job and don’t even get treated in ways that makes you wish that your boss was neglectful, and you knew he was going to stab you in the back because ‘hey we get more points from hiring these people instead of you’ type stuff.
They fired people i trained for saying that the bosses know nothing because i trained them to do the job better, faster, but because they said my boss did a shit job training them- they had to go and i was isolated covering 8 positions that they had 4 people cover. I was alone for 9 weeks with the guys literally running over there to demand i stop working on the machine, to walk up to them just for them to demand i work on the machine i was working on.
I had less than 1 minute to run up and down stairs on 8 positions.
The people across from me were on their phones for 15 minutes with yellow lights all around until 1 of them noticed.
The bosses ignored them to tell me to get to my positions- which held 8, the other people held only 2.
    I was fired for running.
A person was pulling on a belt to get the machine to run because she didn’t know it was shut down.
I ran over to tell her to stop, because there is nothing wrong with it. She was abusing this for about 4 hours and it stopped working the next day.
The guy saw me running and i was fired for a safety violation.
I did report him and put him in a position to, snitch or take the fall for his buddies.
One buddy fired anyone who had been there for a few years on the lightest of things when he was promoted to management to… balance budgets.
Our new janitors literally just followed the old ones, took a picture of their work to say it was their own.
One of the new guys kept stealing my utility knifes.
I was moved to another position- but the manager never signed me out of my station because ‘there is someone who was behind and since i was ahead i could do their job to catch them up’ surprise he left, meaning i got him a full check and i lost half my pay because the system said i didn’t do it.
I was told i had to run around the facility on a fractured leg which the manager just laughed, and said i could still spot… followed by her throwing me under the bus at lunch ‘this person never answers the radio’ she yelled at me for answering it during lunch. She got written up and i was called up to hand over my radio to her.
Days later a manager asked me if i had a radio- i told him i was never assigned one.
Turns out she stopped assigning people radios, stopped them from taking them and wrote them up just to assign them a radio and go ‘see this person never answers the radio’ trying to toss other people under the bus.
We know how this ends and we just stuck to this out of spite.
People stole stuff, still was allowed to stay. People ate food of people they didn’t like just to spit it back into the lunch bag. Not a thing happened
People would stop you in the hallway for nothing more than to make you walk around them and laugh.
At the very least i got the guy who fired everyone demoted back to the position he cut- and saw him spending hours in the break room.
The other person was demoted, but still does nothing but sit back on her phone in the break room and so on.
The sheer amount of shit i covered for lead to it spilling out/ machines are breaking due to mistreatment, the estops are being pulled, the other shifts are pissed due to the state we leave stuff and the managers are dealing with so much shit that they are quitting.
And now its a blood bath of managers ‘its not me its the employees’ that they fired the veterans to look better on the budget for.
The guy who fired me got one of the old guys to just push boxes down the line, making it pile up.
He was so smug, meanwhile boxes were cartwheeling down 2-3 stories.
I told one of their buyers and they sent me a email ‘you can’t talk about working here even after you are terminated’ turns out i cost them a pretty penny and their facility may have been investigated.
‘Yay this person is out of our hair and our budget looks good, we don’t have to pay that thing 3$ more’
Meanwhile i took 1 week off and i saw 5 people on my positions, all of which were away for almost an hour.

The pet from the Curze book is the best part of it (him sitting around naked and smelling like shit eating dead people and complaining to his disgusting guts effigy of the emperor is fun in its own way). Curze cuts off one of his legs (presumably to eat it) so he fashions himself a makeshift peg leg prosthetic.
Because Curze has a dickish sense of humour, he cuts off a bit more of the same leg, making the prosthetic no longer fit. This the last person left alive on a rogue trader vessel who has to pilot it on a month's long journey to Tsagaulsa while getting routinely harassed, abused and slightly eaten by Curze.
Its almost funny how bonkers Curze is in parts, but also super compelling as you get the downbeats of Curze schizomaxing over the course of the great crusade and after.

I'm not a huge night lords fan per say, but they do interest me.
Blood Angels were my first army so there is bias in what i say. But the thing I came to love about the Blood Angels is how they choose to rise above their lesser instincts. To choose to struggle against the temptation to give in, and to win through force of will.
The night lords interest me as they feel like an opposite, where they blood angels are optimistic the night lords are pessimistic.
How Konrad and Sanguinis viewed their foresight shows is most succinctly.
Their contrast is far more interesting to me compared to say the world eaters / angron and the blood angels / Sanguinis.

Neat point. I do hate that it seems that Blood Angels often get used as “generic dickhead marines who get cacked” in a lot of non Blood Angel stories since they are an interesting chapter to me.

Heh, ADB made people like Night Lords with his Omnibus) Talos was a baddie but with goals, and every other significant character in this series was nicely presented. I really like second book, when Talos decides to hop on former NL's battleship and Huron and his warband portrayed as absolute chaos degenerates (shit and blood everywhere, fully corrupted navigator). Even Exalted was not a totally chaos depraved demon-monster until the very end

I like that compared to basically everyone else they are the most pathetic out of all the demigods that even when they had a 4-1 advantage they lost to the angels sanguin who are one of the weaker chapters out there . So it’s fun to see them flail around like big boys only to run into a Mack truck going straight towards them at 80 mph then as they are in the ground still twitching and groaning in pain they try to act like the big dog again.

For me it's the same reason I love the Skaven in Fantasy so much. They're unabashedly, no holds barred, no excuse, over the top, mustache-twirling evil but silly enough that they are never really unstoppable and never win for long. They're like a dark version of a clumsy clown circus number or Will E Coyote. And this is coming from a very straight laced guy who primarily plays and loves Order factions in both 40k and Fantasy (yes even craftworld Eldar and High Elves) and usually plays lawful neutral or lawful evil in RPGs. I also like the Iron Warriors, Dark elves and Chaos dwarves as tamer, more nuanced versions of this.
