Who thinks GW has forgotten about Decimus?
Definitely. If you aren’t one of the four main chaos aligned legions or the black legion they don’t care
I think there’s kind of an unwritten rule at Black library that writers shouldn’t really use other writers characters. However I think Decimus and his warband got a tiny mention in the nachmund campaign books somewhere.
Strange how the Night lords could produce one of the most humane space marines ever
I think the nightlords are one of the reasons you typically DONT want your hulking immortal supersoldiers to be very human
If you are for instance an imperial warlord or the emperor himself, you might not want your incredibly powerful supersoldiers to start having emotional thoughts
Humanity doesnt equal good. Humans are some of the worst monsters ever
I love the omnibus, it has epic moments, funny moments, and tragic moments. It takes these hardened brutal and deeply flawed warcriminals into people you genuinely root for and want to see succeed. Im glad we got to see 1st Claw, they’ll always have a spot in the darkest little corner of me heart
Finishing Voidstalker was one of the most conflicting listens, I know they're evil bastards but I loved them so much
I agree. The whole time I was thinking "you absolutely deserve everything that's coming to you, you sick fucks, but for the love of GOD 𝙋𝙇𝙀𝘼𝙎𝙀 𝙎𝙐𝙍𝙑𝙄𝙑𝙀", even though I knew they wouldn't. Long live the 10th, but also rot in hell. Interesting how that's also how they thought of themselves.
You almost forget at times that they are the Night Lords and not decent people like the Salamanders and White Scars until they do something super messed up
@@dovahfett5919Aaron Demski Bowden casually righting the best BL book ever
Talos' reaction to Septimus' defiance after he found out Septimus got a bit cosy with Octavia cracked me up; like, "did that mortal really just say that to me?"
Then you remember that he told Ruven to fuck off to his face. Man has balls of adamantium.
Man just straight up told a demigod to eat shit in their own language :D
To be fair, he wanted to prevent things from getting complicated for him, her, and himself. Keeping septimus alive took effort, and I don't even know if he knew how being pregnant would affect a navigator they really needed to perform.
My only critique of this video is that there is no mention of Vraal, the most ingenious and subtle space marine to ever live
He did, it's just that Vraal is so ingenious and subtle he didn't register in the video
Honestly I’d love to see a book where the 40k Alpha Legion and 40k Night Lords work together, they honestly sound like they’d get together really well
It'd be fun. More so for the Alpha Legion knowing the Nightlords are going to betray them and setting up carrots for said betrayal, and having contingencies to dictate the fallout so they can accomplish their prime goal. But Night Lords fuckery can be ..... random lol.
Talos stepped on the downed Dreadnought's hull, looking down at the limbless, augmented wreck of a human being.
'I am Talos of the Night Lords. Nod if you understand me!
The slain hero nodded, skin tightening in doubtlessly painful spasms as his life support interfeeds failed. Talos smiled at the sight.
"Know this, Blood Angel. Your final mission was a failure. Your brothers are dead. We will wear their armour in battle against your False Emperor.
And know this also, champion of the Ninth Legion. Twice now, the sons of the Night Haunter have seen you slain. Greet the afterlife within the warp knowing you were too weak to triumph over us, even once!
Talos locked eyes with the spasming remnant in its fluid-filled coffin. in a sure grip despite the weakness of his arm, Talos raised Aurum, the blade of another fallen Angel.
Your bones will be made into trophies for our armour. We will feast upon your gene-seed. And whatever remains of this glorious walking tomb will be salvaged by our tech-priest to house a champion of our own Legion.'
He plunged the blade down. Its golden length stabbed through the casket, impaling the mutilated Imperial hero's open mouth.
'Die, Talos finished, 'with the taste of your Chapter's eternal failure on your tongue
The more I read about this talos fellow the more I get the feeling he isn’t a very pleasant person.
@@marcoe.3314 how pleasant he is kinda depends on which colours you wear. If you're in dark blue, he's a pretty good bloke. Anything else, and he is... Unpleasant.
@@marcoe.3314he's uncharacteristically "nice" for night lords. He's just holding on to a 10,000 year old grudge.
You forgot about Lucoryohus.
Genuinely made cry when it describes the battle between the bleeding eyes and the swooping hawks. How he watches everyone around him die. Veterans of the heresy now reduced to nothing
It’s crazy how ADB made us root for arguably one of the most evil factions in the setting
he did though? There are no holds barred on their behavior@@huelads740
@@huelads740I mean you do see plenty that are what you would expect, but they’re largely in the background, and even then it’s a single Warband; totally doesn’t mean it’s the norm, especially as many mention that Talos is a bit out there even for them, so likely other Warbands are exactly how you would of imagined them to be
Octavia was way more valuable than just being a Slave. It went beyond Talos being nice and showing humanity.
She was legitimately the second most important person on the ship.
I love this series, it's the main reason I started collecting night lords on the tabletop. The interesting characters, the captivating story and the bits of black humor sprinkled in that always caught me off guard made me fall in love with the legion, I just wish gw would show them a little love
I loved the Night Lords for their look use of Raptors before the books released, but the books made me fall in love with them as characters.
I loved the NL omnibus, and it's one of the reasons iI began collecting NL as my first 40k army.
Ave Dominus Nox
This characters singlehandedly opened my eyes for what a Renegade space marine could be. Now, after 5 books, hell of a lot of research and two ttrpg campaigns as one of the Night Lords, I can say - this is the best traitor legion, and probably is one of the most interesting factions in 40k. Hope GW will remember they exist someday.
Adeptus ridiculous and YOU made me want to pick the night lords trilogy in audible, and since then every day ive been hearing 40k and even warhammer fantasy audiobooks on my way to and from work, the nightlords are and will always be in my heart, and Im sad that decimus did not have anything from mercutian, the fact that he was one of if not the only one that kept track of his brothers deeds on his free time, and also was one of the most well "decent" night lords and yet he is now completely forgotten... man... at least we still have lucoryphus around or "luke" as malcharion called him (which is a small yet super cool detail that shows how FUCKING OLD luke is, fleshing out his character a bit more)
Decimus joined Marduk, Honsou, Occam and countless other Chaos warlords who are so much more impressive than the armless failure.
The omnibus is genuinely my favourite series of not only 40k books but just books in general
I told my mother about the scene where Xarl remembers walking down the main street of nostromo, with the parade and the woman running to him yelling cause she still remembers her baby boy.. didnt tell her anything else about them. It made her cry cause i had just finished basic when i read the book
RIP mom🙏 🪦
Halfway through the second book rn, dembski-bowden is an absolute genius of a writer
For me my favorite moment was also from the 1st book when Malcharion was finally successfully awoken and when everyone wonders how, he only replies *"i heard bolter fire"*.
And it only just drives home the fact he was a machine of war and only the sounds of violence hwld the power to bring him back to reality because in the end thats all he ever knew.
Night lords trilogy is fantastic I love the dynamic of the Astartes feeling so inhuman but human at the same time Talos is the best example of that
Im a hardcore dark angels simp, but this series skyrocketed night, Lords to my second favorite legion… which makes parts of the Horus heresy absolutely amazing
Dark Angels and Night Lords are one of the rivalries of the heresy too lol. Best legions fr
@@user-fv5ov2gf5v and it’s great because it emphasizes the whole no good guys thing. Sure, the night lords are more outwardly warcrimy but just try saying the wrong thing to an interrogator chaplain… You’re gonna have a bad time. Plus people seem to forget, other chapters have chapter serfs, the Dark Angels have servitors…
Sevatar and Corswain single handedly make the Thramas Crusade one of the best aspects of the HH.
Prisoner to Octavia ‘He’s coming for you’.
Octavia ‘No. He’s coming for you’.
This trilogy plus the primarch book are the reason I have a night lords army
Did you make it out of old tac squads or did you use primaries models? Just curious.
30k tactical marines, 40k chaos marines, and a good amount of night lord custom bits from etsy
Definitely look into the stories with sevatar if you haven’t yet they’re all short books but definitely worth it (mainly prince of crows but he’s also in savage weapons and the long night)
When Abaddon was trying to corrupt Talos I think it was really funny how after he told Tzeentch and Slaanesh to fuck off he turned to the Nurgle's manifestation and in response Nurgle basically said "you know what I'm not even gonna try" and left. Like he literally gave up and faded out of existence like a fucking meme.
I don't feel like there's many times where a literal *Chaos God* gets so frustrated they basically say "fuck it" and quits.
You forgot how in his revenge on Abaddon’s prisoner allies, Talos played catch with a prisoner like his father never did-
except it was using his buddy’s severed head.
Even better, the 8th edition Chaos Codex, it’s acknowledged that they’re all going to do a little trolling against Ulthwe craftworld, so the ending, that incredible ending, is still canon.
Was a black templars player but after reading the nightlords omnibus I'm now building a nightlords army someone help my wallet can't take it
I will say I'd love a 'Secret War' book between the Alpha Legion, the Raven Guard, and the Night Lords.
You inspired me to try out the tabletop game, so I ordered the introductory set. Thanks for the amazing content Mr. Bones, I can't wait to see what the next videos on!
I’m in agreement with you. The Night Lords series was absolutely outstanding! Their extreme flaws combined with little bits of humanity shining through really made for unforgettable characters. In my opinion, it’s how chaos should be written all the time. It amplifies the tragedy of it all and really highlights the duality of mankind.
Having read the omnibus, I can honestly say its top tier 40k writing. So many memorable characters its hard to pick a favourite but Mercutian and Variel are easily some of the best in the series.
It's ADB at his best. I guess he's good at writing Chaos boys as sympathetic, but he also writes heroes like they're dumb and scummy.
I'm in the middle of the omnibus (because of you) and it's definitely up there in WH novels I've read this far. Really wants me to see GW make NL relevant in the lore and tabletop more.
I loved the books bought all three Told ADB himself he was on my Facebook (don't have it anymore face book that is) the bought the omnibus. For the extra sub stories. You are SSSOOOOO right what GREAT WRITING! Love all have his books!
The Night Lords Trilogy is amazing! I'm building my Warband of Night Lords and building a trilogy of books for one of the Warlords, a prequel Triology for the Warband that came before and a trilogy where they finally clash with my Black Templars that I call "The Armata Crusade".
Yes
This is exactly what i wanted for a video
Thank you
AVE DOMINUS NOX
You are the sole reason I'm now a Night Lord fan I saw your video on their legion and thought they seemed cool and one day a few months later remembered hearing the Nightlords omnibus is considered some of the best 40k literature out there so I bought the first book to see of I like it and it is now one of my favorite books with Blood Reaver now taking its place.
i love your vids man, been quite therapeutic for me, and i need therapeutic right now, the background music, the lore and the way you speak it all is just so relaxing, thank you
Just finnished Soul hunter cos of this Video, i just want to say my wallet hates you Arthur, too much Bat shaped forge world resin has been ordered. i love this book so much i can’t wait to start Blood Reaver thank you for introducing me
I fucking loved the audio books, still think about the 10th having to fight another company cause they wanted revenge and the description of midnight clad being lit up in the pitch black by bolt rounds hitting it as they closed the distance still sound sooooo dope
The Nightlords omnibus and the Eiesenhorn omnibus are tied for my favorite collections of 40k books. Also I forgot, is it implied that Decius was the son of Septimus and Octavia or is that something that fans came up with?
I think that it may have been left deliberately ambiguous for readers to come to their own conclusions. Looking into it in depth there are arguments for and against it being the case.
It's heavily implied. Talos tells Septimus that Variel would come for his baby and at the end he does, soo..
@@user-fv5ov2gf5v At the end of the book, years after the death of Talos, Decimus and Variel are both alive and well. How is Decimus still around if Variel had come for Septimus and Octavia’s baby Decimus ?
You kinda answered your own question lmao. He wanted to induct him into the legion for the (assumed) stability he would get from Octavia's navigator blood and Talos' geneseed@@useruseruseruseruser790
the implications are... kinda horrifying if true since the idea of a navigator-human hybrid beefed up to astartes levels is unpredictable asf
My brother was constantly recommending it to me once he learned I started looking into 40K lore and man was that first read through a trip. So happy I read it so early so I could come back to it later and know instantly any ADB books are worth a read.
I physically felt the synapses click when i heard the omori menu theme in the background when i opened the video. Stayed for the video, though, i'm a big fan of the undivided chaos legions (not as much the black legion) but I love how individual the night lords feel when theyre actually given the time of day in the stories, pinnacle chaos faction imo. Great content, great choice of music as always.
This series was the first major Warhammer books I read. And I instantly fell in love.
I don't know if you will ever do this but I'm just getting into 40k and your videos are really helping me get into it and was wondering of all the 40k books what should I have as a reading order to get into it
usually I just suggest picking a faction you like and reading any books involving them, and then move from there if possible.
though a good entry point in general would likely be the Uriel Ventris series
@@TheBoneZone40k thanks I'll start with that series and move on to something about the ultra marinesif you think that's a good idea
Really funny you posted this the day after I finished the second book in the series and just started the third. Because I'm listening to adeptus ridiculous from the beginning and following their books club as I get to them
Just finished Soulhunter before this came out and my god is it just leagues above everything else by GW besides maybe Hellsreach, cant wait to start the second book!
It is hands down the best book series I ever read and listened to. I would like to add that it is HEAVILY recommended to listen to the audiobooks.
Man talks about how much he loves the night lords and does not talk about the decimus even though it's on the thumbnail. Night lord behavior.
The Night Lords Omnibus (Soul Hunter, Blood Reaver, and Void Stalker) are, alongside Helsreacj, my all-time most beloved 40K books. They turn what essentially amounts to unstoppable killing machines into likeable characters.
Just heard you on LoreCrimes and I see you covering my favorite Legion. Subbed.
I think the coolest moment in the omnibus for me was when Talos screamed the bridge of an imperial ship to their knees and pretty much killed them. It was so metal and easily one of my favorite moments in 40k, it really showed the power a space marine has when they think outside of the box.
Awesome vid dude!
Aight, not gonna lie, that scene alone convinced me to check out the books, thanks for the recommendation Mr Boneman!
I loved these books so much I started a army and got a tattoo and wrote a whole warband lore backstory
I was SO HAPPY when I saw you drop this video, Ave Dominus Nox!!!!!
Came for the Night Lords.
Stayed for 1st Claw.
Ave Dominus Nox, keep up the good vids!
Have just gone and bought the omnibus Night Lords book on the merit of this video! Great work!
I loved the Soul Hunter book. And hat part you were talking about. When the guards are weighing their options. Whether to leave her and run. One of them says to the leader, "Is he here for her?" And Octavia starts laughing and says, "No, he's here for YOU."
Imagining I was one of those brutes I almost shit myself.
It’s an amazing trilogy. The characters or horrible yet they’re multifaceted and at times we find ourselves empathizing with them. It really turns them from allegiant of one dimensional sadist into something so much more complex. Outstanding writing, not just for Warhammer, but in general.
You earned a sub. You do have the skills.
I love the omnibus so god damn much I love the legion of the night lords. They've never exactly been in the spotlight but they've always been in my heart. I hope we get to see decimus raise the legion to its glory soon. Ave Dominus Nox
This got me to get the trilogy and I'll about to finish Void Stalker now. Possibly my favorite 40k books and ive been through about 50. Thanks for the recommendation. Ave Dominus Nox brother.
The Nigltlord omnibus is one you can't stop once you start. And once you're done, you can't not think about.
I’m currently a quarter of the way through the second book and I’m really enjoying it so far
Still going through Void stalker, but unfortunately I was previously spoiled on big points of the story.
But still the omnibus took the night lords from a legion I knew next to nothing about, to easily one of, if not THE favorite legion of mine.
I really hope GW sees how well the omnibus was received and green light the author to make another, be it nightlords again or another.
Could you imagine a same stile series about the world eaters that actually hate/regret/want to become more than what they are? That be sweet.
These books are the main reason the NL have become my favorite traitor legion. They are so well written and protray the NL so well I couldn't help but fall in love.

This video actually convinced me to listen to the audio book, which yeah, goes fucking hard…
Literally one of the best stories I have ever read
Never clicked a video faster in my life? keep em coming!
So I actually picked up the omnibus version of the hunter series because of your video. I was going to play them as my first army but went with 1ksons and I may have goofed.
Talos is my favourite character as well, very nice video 😎
Ok I'll go read the night Lords omnibus.
Just bought the first book on Audible, I appreciate the suggestion, Bro!
Absolutely phenomenal books.
The funniest part of the books was when Talos was walking up Septimus but Ruven runs up to him and is so happy that he thinks that he has been welcomed back. I could not stop laughing for so long I just thought that that moment was the best part of the book
Ruven getting mercilessly bullied throughout that book was probably one of the funniest bits. Dude has so little respect to his name literal mortal slaves are able to tell him to fuck off.
Funniest part for me had to be the end though when everyone's gathered in the war-room and Ruven's just like "alright pals so where to next?" as all the other Night Lords are ominously circling around towards him. Then cut to him getting bisected unceremoniously by Talos and having his bones decorate the bridge.
Loved listening to this. If you haven't, please read The First Heretic. Your telling of Talos and Octavia reminded me of my love for Argel Tal and Cyrene.
Just finished the trilogy because of this video and am returning to assure everyone that this trilogy is just as good as it’s described. I am now afraid that no other 40k book will ever strike me the way this series has. ADB is absolutely amazing for this.
Those books are the reason I dives into the warhammer 40K audiobook!
Just finished the books, they were amazing
so true about the omnibus, the last fight of Xarl was just amazing
Great book who make you feeling for a group of sociopathic.
im only at page 100 of the omnibus but i loved the part where talos screamed loud enough to kill multiple serfs and the admiral started to cry blood when they were fighting on the ship
I am what Slav squats in the dark.
-Talos
YOUR Arthur? We have come for you.
"I will never forgive you for what you did to him."
Does it make it all the more tragic that he said he was sorry?
Spoilers for the Omnibus:
Holy shit does Vandred ever go out like a fucking beast. Guy used the single instantaneous moment of panic from the Exalted to steal his body back while staring down a fleet of warships some 16 or more to his 1. He knew he had absolutely no chance of beating them, goes fuck it and charges in anyway before ripping their ships apart, then when the Covenant of Blood is finally crippled to the extent that the enemy fleet could just sit back and pick it apart from the distance what does he do?
He ejects the warp drive, detonates it boiling yet another enemy ship into a spaceborne puddle and uses the force of the explosion to propel his ship into a headlong collision with one more Corsair ship, finally giving his body fully over to the Exalted with the final words of "I hope this hurts" just in time for the Exalted to be crushed in the colliding ships.
What a goddamn badass.
Bruh the Omori theme for a Night Lords video? I had feels from the music alone, I mean I cried at both but…
*remembers how most of the Night Lords grew up*
Actually ya know what that’s totally on point.
The Edge Lords can be fun...for _very_ brief periods of time.
Great video
When I was first getting into 40k, the first books I got were the Night Lords trilogy. I am very, very glad I started on those books because it completely cemented my love for the universe. It set the tone perfectly, and I see 40k lore through the perspective of ABD and how he sees it. Space Marines also went from one of my least favorite factions to one of my favorites now that I could see them not just as generic super soldiers, but very flawed barely human anymore demigods gods.
The only problem is that I haven’t managed to find any 40k books as good as the trilogy. Not even Eisenhorn got close for me :(
i think this video already made me fall for the night lords
Nice video. RIP UZAS, SERION, TALOS, MECUTIAN and 10th caption malcarion
Well chosen. What should we read next that’s just as epic?
I like how after Talos saves Octavia she thanks him but Talos doesn't respond because being thanked is so foreign to him that he genuinely didn't know how to respond.
He even makes a mental note that twice in one Terran year had someone told him "thank you" and takes small pride in it
