SPIES Extraction at Charlotte Motor Speedway

  • An interesting type of extraction called SPIES (Special Patrol Insertion/Extraction System) for the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. They had completed the Insertion via fast-rope earlier, but I did not have my camera ready then. Audio was garbage, but I managed to clean it up enough to be presentable at the very least.

    I once did this off the fantail of a ship, then onto an aircraft carrier. The pilot took us on a low ride over the Persian Gulf. Swinging us from side to side. I am still cleaning my chonies.

    Doing this was some of the most fun I had in the Army. We did STABO extractions in Korea at Camp Casey and Camp Stanley. It was a pure adrenaline rush.

    This technique originated in Viet Nam for extracting Long Range Reconasance Patrols(LRRP). Oft refered to as "Dope on a Rope.

      Tom Mallon actually it was called a STABO extraction-STABLE TACTICAL AIRBORNE BODY OPERATION,and I was trained for it in Special Forces but it was never used in the terrain we were deployed to.For the most part we extracted by helo without it.

    My husband did 20 years and watching stuff like this makes him wish he could do it all again..! These soldiers play hard but when they put that uniform on they are a completely different person . There is alot of trust you have to have friendships that last a lifetime. I'm proud to say my husband was a part of those that helped keep America the greatest country in the world!!!❤❤❤ 🙏🙏🙏🙏

    We called it "Pearls on a string" in the USN. I was one of those on the string and it's an amazing experience for an 18-year old to be flying like that. You're probably gonna have dreams of flying after this exercise for some years to come.

    I got to do this once but I forgot the cardinal rule with sling harnesses . . . make sure your balls aren't in between the strap and your thigh BEFORE you put all your weight in the harness!

    Gosh 4 minutes....In the Marine infantry that's enough time to loose a Marine and then pick him up again. Seriously though awesome display of capabilities and power. Simply awesome to see among American territory. The implementation of this extraction is limited. The logistics and individual training to make this feasible is incredible. Semper Fi

Its slow and it requires gear thats unique.How often do you need to only extract a squad? Not often if ever. Taking a Platoon home under duress in the field Um well takes some time. Marines can only bring what they need in country. I believe a MEU can go three months engaged in total war. Though I might be wrong about that. I'm sure you know this and I won't bolster my manhood by telling you how much I know about military shit. Like you did to me. It was a joke and fuck you brotha. Semper Fi

      David, if you have "good" memories of STABO extractions, I bow to you! It's been 50 YEARS, and I am still hunting for the parts of my ass I felt tearing off during a 1970 AF test of the Fulton "Skyhook" system. They describe it as a kick in the pants, lighter than a chute opening. Whoever wrote THAT had NOT tried it! ! Haven't been able to see a C-130 since without wishing for a Stinger!

    As a Hawk crew chief, I got to ride that line as well coordinate it in the aircraft. It was cool but I think I’ll pass on doing it again. Rappelling was more fun.

      What about the first amendment? Does that mean nothing anymore?
      I am all for honoring our troops and showing respect to them, but the protests during the national anthem were never about the troops. Those protests were about police brutality and the unfair treatment of minorities by the criminal justice system. Sure, they could have picked a better time or place to protest, but under the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, they had the right to do it.

    Being a wife of a military man for 20 years I do have to say it was a great experience. I loved the travel, the freinds you make along the way. I do have to say when my husband reached his 20 year mark and we discussed him retirement I do have to saynwas relieved when he did. I am so proud of our military men and women. However I do want to give a shout out to the military wives that stand behind their men and support them in all they do. I don't think people realize how hard it is to kiss your husband and wave as he goes off to fight for his country. To be home with the children most times in a different state then your family on your own. To hold you breath everytime you hear a knock or your doorbell. So being a military wife for 20 years stand strong your never alone. 🙏
