Why I had my BMW 435d Stage 2 remapped by Unicorn Motor Developments. Much better than DMS maps.

- Äas pĆidĂĄn 19. 05. 2018
- A remap of my BMW F32 435d xdrive. This is the second remap and I am comparing this to the DMS Automotive one; which I have had for over 12 months.
We then have a head to head with a good friend of mine who has an f36 (Gran Coupe) version on his from Unicorn as well and is known as one of the best mapped cars around in the BMW f series community.
Thanks to Rick & Chloe @ Unicorn Motor Developments for a fantastic remap and the opportunity for a fine tune and head to head with Charlie Fleming, at no additional cost. Thanks guys.

Good video.. i randomly was searching for 435d was a nice surprise to watch this.... I wasn't expecting a yellow 435d with go faster strips
Yeah, you wouldn't miss Charlies car !!! Bumble Bee :)
Thanks for the confirmation. I've got a tune with RS in Leeds, however rolling road shows 355hp, however I've got the Wagner pro intercooler and Piper cross filter, do was expecting a bigger figure closer to the 385 you and your pal got. Unicorn is close to me so I think I'll make a visit next year and see what they can do. Good to know your happy with your remap. đđ
Let me know how you get on đ
Could do with seeing a video of the dashboard when accelerating. I've seen a video of the DMS map on someone else's F30 335d and it looks rapid, so I would be keen to see a comparison.
Top tip to anybody with newer cars, don't ever go by the dealers service interval, they are sales tactics to make you think they're going to be cheaper to maintain and i'm sure designed to cause failures down the road so someone has to pay to get them fixed later on. Most manufacturers now claiming 20k miles intervals!! Look at your oil and filters after 5k and they will be rank, especially diesel and all causes build up. I generally do mine every 5k but certainly never go over 10k
Hi Richard, it's been nearly 7 months since the Unicorn remap. I also have a 435d, mines a GC. I've had a different remap on mine however I think I've got more to unleash, so was keen to know how your car has behaved and performed over the last 7 months. Any issues??
Engines Rule the car has performed faultless over the last 7 months đđ
Going unicorn on Wednesday to get my 435d done, currently got a superchips map on mine and its rubbish!! Will update soon
What was the result of the remap?
396bhp and 810nm torque. The bhp is probably higher but the air filter was clogged and when I got home ordered a K&N one. Plus it was hitting the torque limiter in 6th gear on the top of the runs abs changing up. Since then Iâve added the XHP gearbox flash and that has removed the limits and feels much better. I reckon bhp is about 410 real life.
@@richardtorr-T7 This will definitely void the warranty right? Are there any ways of getting more power and torque out of the 435d without voiding the warranty?
@@Arman-nl6mg any amendments will void the warranty but if that car is out of warranty anyway it doesnât matter.
@@richardtorr-T7 I wouldn't use k&N, whilst it lets more air in, it's not very clean. The oil can also mess up the MAF sensor.
Thank you. Whats going on with the jumper though
Richard, could you give me details of where you're friend bought his twin pipes from please? Looks great. Thanks
Michael Harbour Cybox (Liverpool).
Cobra do a dual exhaust set up as well, just checkout their website and take it to unicorn for a fitting and remap
Cars don't half lose a lot of power and torque through the transmission. My bike produces 120 crank horsepower but still manages 108 at the wheel.
Also, the gearbox usually restricts torque (BMW do anyway and ZF actually says it can be higher). I applied the XHP gearbox flash and that definitely made a difference and was as noticeable as the original map. Definitely need to do both together.
I got 435d xdrive, same year as yours, cant do any more than 37mpg in town when driving like an old man, when putting it in a Sports mode every now and again 30-33mpg. Basically my numbers are much lower than yours, wondering its due to remap or my car is just like that ...
currently trying to milk it on one tank, to see how much I can get out of it and sitting on 33mpgh...
Hi Alex, did you have it done at Unicorn? I drive motorways and A roads and if driving normally get the top 45 ish mpg. The average since Iâve had it is 39.7. Some maps may just be overfueling. Also if thatâs the case or sensors are being tricked it may be reporting wrong, so try the old school way of full to full and noting the distance and how much to fill it up again.
"Why I had my BMW 435d Stage 2 remapped by Unicorn Motor Developments" that's your question? Probably because you wanted more power? Right?
Hi Richard, I've got a 2016 f30 335d remapped by DMS which produced 414bhp and 590lbs ft on there dyno. The car is significantly alot faster than standard with the DMS remap. I noticed that they disabled the front wheel drive system for when on the rolling road, is your car alot faster with the unicorn map compared to the DMS map?
mikey335d Iâm a little frustrated with DMS as I now know that disabling 4wd means more rolling resistance and therefore will overstate the actual BHP!!! When I took it to Unicorn and they didnât disable the 4wd then it showed 354 bhp. After Unicorn mapped it on the same day with the same dyno it was showing 386 bhp. It feels even better so is definitely an improvement. I just wish Iâd have gone to Unicorn first and saved some dosh âčïž
@@richardtorr-T7 uve got me curious now about mine! đ€ so ur saying the car is alot faster with the unicorn map compared to the DMS map?? Did u have all the mods dun to the car when dms remapped it??? ie intercooler or did u have these installed afterwards, and had then installed before u had it remapped by unicorn??
mikey335d I had the intercooler fitted a few weeks before going to Unicorn, but although he could eek out a few more bhp because of that, heâs got 40bhp more!!!! When driving away from Unicorn I could feel the difference. Iâm going back on 27th October as Rick has got some more tweaks with the turbos and has offered to apply it to mine; which will trigger another video đ
@@richardtorr-T7 I may have to go visit rick, what Kinda torque were u getting before and after the unicorn map? I've noticed u have had a alpina gear box map? What has this dun I've herd about this
mikey335d canât remember the original torque offhand but itâs 800nm now. Alpina Gearbox just is better suited to a mapped car as Alpina cars have similar performance. Also shows to current gear on the instrument cluster and when in sport mode uses 8th gear. Plus stays in gear longer when using the paddles. Rick charges ÂŁ125 for the gearbox map so Iâd definitely have it.
Hi mate. Brilliant video one of the best explained and concise videos on CZcams about the 35d engines and remaps! Just to confirm, is your 435d performance superior with the Unicorn map to the DMS map that you had previously? Noticeable difference? Any other mentions after the map? Thanks mate!
imyk 611 thanks for the feedback. Yes, Iâm getting about the same performance again and you can definitely feel it. Itâs much better and I do regret the DMS map (down to cost), but the positive is that I wouldnât have found Unicorn without being not as impressed as I was expecting. I had an e92 335d previously and that had about 340bhp and felt quicker. The chap that did that one is no longer mapping. Iâm really happy with the performance and nothing negative to report.
hiya mate. Was this DPF off ?
No, dpf is still intact.
Hi, I have one like yours and plan to remap to stg2, how gerbox do such nm in zf site it says that hold only 700nm not 800 plus?
Hi Lucijan, there are two zf gearboxes and I think mine is rated at 750nm. However, the torque only goes above that level for a few seconds and I donât launch control it. Itâs been fine for over 15,000 miles đ
@@richardtorr-T7 oh thx for replying
these cars have the zf HP70 gearbox, 700nm max, if you want to go over that then you would need to upgrade to the HP90 if possible, btw there are NO 750nm variants used on 3/435 xd's although I believe other manufacturers do use them
Been up against an M3 or M4 yet??
None dare race me đ€Ș
Would be quicker id imagine certainly to 60 anyway
Iâm a car mechanic myself, and I have a 435d xdrive coupe with 402bhp and 750nm, it goes from 0-100 in 3.9 seconds with summer tires on good road conditions. I can proudly confirm that it easily takes an m3 and m4 in a drag race due to the xdrive
Oscar Sebbelov fuel consumption?
Bartunc Akbaba depends on traffic and which mode Iâm in, when Iâm cruising normally in eco pro around 17km/l in the city, but on the highway in eco when Iâm driving an average of 110km/h 18-22km/l, my record on one liter is 27km with an average speed of 90km/h
This where most bmw owners fail , why on earth you would service you car at 16k or 20k miles as bmw says ? đ€
Iâve had no issues with that but itâs up to each owner. Iâd definitely not go over the recommended intervals.
What camera? Audio is too good to be a go pro Iâd have thought?
K A it is a go pro (hero 4 silver) but without the waterproof case on đđ
how is it mounted without a case? Thanks for reply
K A it is in a black frame with a standard connector at the bottom rather than the waterproof case.
Great video what was the cost of the intercooler is it easy to install.
Easy to install, but you need to raise the car up, so took it to a local garage and charged me an hours labour.
Intercooler was about ÂŁ700
Is your car smoking at all, ive seen a few 335d/435d smoking
I only got a very small amount at about 4500 rpm (but Charlie didn't at all). Charlies uses BP Ultimate and I've started using that and it's absolutely smoke free.
What fuel were you using when it was smoking? Bcz i inly use shell, either normal shell or v-power
it was Shell v-power. I now use BP Ultimate and find it much better.
What happened to all the promised videos Richard. This seems to be the final 435D video and I was looking forward to seeing more. I believe a DMS remap is around the ÂŁ1k mark isn't it? If they're not delivering as promised that's not good. I live pretty close to DMS so I'd always kept them in mind for my 320D or a future 35D purchase.
stubones Iâm having some building work done at home and thatâs taken up my time. Iâll be digging out my GoPro and have some more videos soon. Iâve had the Mperformance carbon fibre body kit fitted, so that will be the first one.
Not worth mapping 320's unless its the 163 hp version
Great bunch of people but they f##k your car up and give you silly numbers lol
Do you mean Unicorn or DMS? Unicorn are great and had over 4 years and 50,000 miles on the map with zero issues.
Wtf
Hi, great video, many thanks for posting. I have a non modded in any way 16 plate 435D M Sport.... would you recommend I visit Unicorn for a remap? does it harm the car in any way? I'm in Leeds so not a million miles away from Stockport... I liked the look of the upgraded exhaust on your pals car.. how much would something like that cost? say if I went for the better air filter, the remap and the exhaust? all the best, Paul. Just subbed and I'll try and find the FB group you mentioned.
Paul Sheard Iâd definitely go to Unicorn (mention me!!). If you have any doubts, speak to Rick and youâll know in minutes that he knows his stuff and is not prepared to push the car too much, so it will still be safe and not smoke đš. Mine has now done about 25k miles on the map and no issues at all. The exhaust or the air filter will make virtually no difference but for me the filter is cleaned more regularly and is more cost effective. The exhaust is just aesthetic. I canât have the exhaust as I have a BMW retractable towbar (see my other videos which are gliding and I tow my own glider). Youâll notice a massive difference. The only regret I had was not doing it sooner !!! Iâd get the Alpina Gearbox map done as well. Rick does that at the same time.
Paul Sheard the Facebook group is F3x owners đ
@@richardtorr-T7 Man thanks for taking the time to reply. I'll certainly give Unicorn a call and mention your name :) . atb
@@richardtorr-T7 Great I'll sign up, thx again
Paul Sheard they are closed on Mondays as they are open Tuesday to Saturday each week.
Have you upgraded the charge pipe and if so which one did you go with? cheers
Leigh Barry no mate. Just the intercooler.
Brilliant video mate! Just to confirm your cars running a factory exhaust, just a air filter and a Wagner intercooler supported by a unicorn remap? Thanks
Yes, thats right. Plus I have the Alpina gearbox map, but that doesnt make a difference to the BHP.
Yep - that's all (K&N air filter, but that doesn't make any difference).
Richard Torr where do you get the alpina gear box map
@@JMass3011 unicorn do it
enjoyed the video as i am currently doing all my research for when i pick mine up next year. i have only ever heard good things about unicorn motor developments. have you had any issues with the gear box with it having the ZF700 gearbox (max torque apparently is 700NM)
Hi Andrew, no problems at all. Rick @ Unicorn says that it is only over 700nm (I thought the later versions we rated for 750nm, but could be wrong) for a small period and is over-engineered anyway. Just make sure you only drive it hard when the engine is up to temperature to ensure everything is warm and lubricated !!! Mention me to Rick and you'll get the red carpet service as I'm a regular there and he applies frequent updates for me. Get the Alpina Gearbox flash done at the same time, if you haven't already it makes a big difference when done at the same time as a remap.
@@richardtorr-T7 thanks Richard I will definitely do that as was also considering the gearbox map as have heard they are much better post map. How much is the gearbox map out of curiousity
andrew O'Rourke ÂŁ125 for the Alpina Gearbox map đ
@@richardtorr-T7 definitely worth doing then for that price. Thanks for your help
Richard Torr who did your Alpina gearbox map?
What's the high speed acceleration like after the map? This is where the diesels loose it's grunt just wondering if there's an improvement from stock
THEG12EG itâs pretty quick. Get the revs at 3-3.5k and the top end acceleration is nice.
Mine pulls very hard after new map and ic. Pulls strong right to redline if need be.
I have 435d stage one 393 bhp. I have exact same rear back box delete by same people makes zero difference in bhp as I went back to rolling road after in fact 1 bhp down. Itâs just for looks. I have now had map update and Wagner intercooler fitted yet to have a new rr run yet.
Whats a back box delete mate. And what work you doing to your car. And where from?
Let me know how you get on (either here or on the F3x group). Charlie's figures are about 20 BHP lower than his original map, but that's down to ambient temp and new tyres etc. Its close enough to 400 BHP and it drives very nice and that's all that matters !!
yeeah spoke to charlie lots, saw his figures down in 380s, its gonna be hot day on sat when i get my rr done, but will let you know, im hoping higher than my 393bhp before intercooler and new map.
Lee Kindell what was your figures in the end? Whatâs the mods; remap and wagner?
K A oh hi. Well Surrey rolling road last week. 409bhp and 575ft lb great result and on a hot hot day 25 degrees
Can you give me a rough idea on price for that remap?
esuohdica it costs ÂŁ500 for a remap, but speak to Rick or Chloe and mention my name and youâll get the red carpet treatment !!! Iâd also recommend the Alpina Gearbox map for an extra ÂŁ125 at the same time đ
Cheers for the reply, I'm really tempted with the 435d GC or 335d Touring actually. Thanks
esuohdica my friend is having his 2018 445d GC done on 27th October at Unicorn and Iâm going with him to film it, so subscribe if you havenât already and youâll get the notification when I upload it and other videos đ
