Perfect Timing, I just ran into this issue last night and there was nothing online that explained the difference. I had a rebuild come back because of no movement in D4 or Reverse, but it did move in Manual 1, 2, & 3.
It was a 2004 4L80e with the newer Overrun Drum & Planet Set, when I took it back apart, I confirmed that I had installed the correct newer Sprag with Blue Inserts, but it free wheeled both ways, so I tried the earlier all Black Sprag, which fit on the newer drum with some play, then I found an earlier Planet Set I put in and it locked like it should with the little bump you showed, I felt something still wasn't right.
In the end, my Brand New Sprag with Blue Inserts was defective, 4 of the Rollers/Blue inserts were stuck in the plastic cage and didn't slide over like all the others causing the Planet set to Free Spin in both directions.
Very important to make sure it locks in clockwise position before any further assembly.
    Hope this helps someone else

Thanks for the video Ryan. My GMPP 4L85E uses late production everything and a old style overrun drum with the black sprag. I confirmed it using your video.

Jake at Jakes performance transmission has a video saying that the early model 4L80E overrun clutch planetary is stronger because of the sprag is stronger. That is about the only thing the early model 4L80E has over the later model 4L80E.

I am going to rebuild a 4L80E out of a 1991 1-Ton Chevy square body 4X4 crew cab that has a 1992 or 1993 4L80E that was replaced under warranty in Feb. 1993. I am going to get the stage-2 kit from Jake's Performance Transmission because this kit come with parts that fixes many of the known weaknesses that early model 4L80E transmission have.
It was your videos that clued me into the Sonnax Overrun Valve that I am going to install because this truck is driven a lot on Interstate and and State Highway camping trips up and down mountain passes, and I do not want to do a bunch of shifting up and down manual to overdrive gears while I am cruising on the Interstate.

Good info, what where the specific years for each transmission? Going to the pick your part this weekend and picking one from an 2001 Express 2500.

Black sprag transmisison should be 2000, because it has black sprag but also has the top bellhousing bolt hole. Blue sprag is 2001+ don't know specific year.

Please, please, please. Some of you builders STOP calling a roller clutch a "sprag". It is not! A roller clutch is a roller clutch and a sprag is a sprag.
