Dual Feeding Direct Clutches 4L80E

  • Dual feed the direct clutches on a 4L80E transmission. This process is shown with the transmission already removed and disassembled. This applies more hydraulic pressure on the direct clutch piston which provides more holding force in 3rd gear which is the direct gear for this 4L80E transmission. This should be done whenever a transmission is rebuilt.
    The tools necessary to complete the job:
    Direct drum return spring compressor:

    Assembly lube for piston seal:

    Done all the modifications that you have suggested super excited didn't know if there's check ball in the case that should be removed for the Dual feed

      Yeah I left out number 7 I think put the trans back in the truck this past weekend. Feels good reverse feels a little weak you have to tap the gas to get it to start backing up just ordered pressure gauge plan on going through the pressures making sure everything is working properly can't find any specs on pressure when doing a dual feed.

      dual feed has nothing to do with pressure.

    Thanks for the great video. I just did all this but am now wondering what not to do in my transgo hd2 kit. Didn't realize they do it a different way?

    Can you do away with the wave disc/shims in both drum assemblies and just install another steel in it's for a more firmer shift thank you

    I'm stockpiling parts at the moment. Got a 2006 4L80E going behind a mild 496 in an Impala. Should I do the Sonnax kit mods on the pump and what frictions do you prefer for a build?

    Leave out second sealing ring. K. The same as a THM 400 second sealing ring? Can you leave out that same ring in a THM 400? Great piece of information. Thanks.

    What specific kit are you using for this rebuild? Are there some manufacturers/Brands to stay away from?

  • @BuiltRiteTrans

    I suppose it wouldn't hurt to drill that hole in the drum but I've never heard of the 400s and the four old ladies having the centrifugal apply issue like the 4l60 does. The only time I've drilled that hole in the direct drum is on a trans brake application.
    But who knows if somebody figured that it works better than so be it but I never known the 400 and 4l80 to have that issue

    I'm planning on rebuild for my 4l80e.I already have a new transgo HD2 kit.Should or could this dual feed mod still be done.This is for a daily driver hd truck that I plan on towing with once in a while.Ive replaced transmissions but this will be my first build so I'm new to internals.thanks for any info.

      yes do this and toss the transgo stack plate and pressure relief right in the garbage. I personally don't like the trans go kits at all.

    Can this be done with out any shift kits at all, i have a new direct drum with new molded piston to get away from the this cast aluminum piston. i do see the value and reliability of this mob. This is a 1994 model year as well. 2nd question. on the forward drum piston is aluminum piston as well, i purchased the molded piston as well and trying to get information on using existing seal holder with new seal on bottom of drum or remove it, and install press on molded seal? I can't seem to find any info on this.Any info would be great. Thanks

      @johnjhalliv5803 Před 6 lety +4

      yes most definitely do the dual feed. honestly theres nothing wrong with the cast pistons. use forward steels in the direct drum and add a 6th clutch. run clearances .010-.012 per friction. use a sonnax boost valve in the pump. and get a torque flite 727 heavy HD intermediate clutch snap ring for the intermediates in the 80e

      What I was thinking but the hole is much smaller than the feed hole. If the whole was about the same size or bigger I'd be worried

  • @bigtires100
    @bigtires100 Před měsícem

    If the idea of dual feeding the clutch pack is to add more surface area on the piston to be pressurized doesn't drilling a hole in the chamber that is being pressurized bleed off the pressure?

    This kinda was answered already so I'm rebuilding my 4l80e for 1000hp hp tuners already adjust the shifting so I just need to dual feed it so I can do just what you did and it's good to go right ?

    Doing this would illuminate the need for the multilayer plate from a trans go kit, should the rest of the kit be installed per their instructions, minus the pressure relief?

      It would eliminate the need for a Transgo period, the only benefit of the transgo is that it dual feeds the directs without the trans coming out of the vehicle.

    VIDEO SHOULD BE CORRECTED OR AT LEAST ADDRESS THOSE WITH NO REVERSE ISSUES!!. Bur maybe they aren't installing their spraggs backwards.
    This from the LS1TECH pages_----------"I fixed it. The intermediate sprag was backwards. I also removed the reverse check ball. If you dual feed your '80e, make SURE to remove that reverse check ball or it WILL NOT WORK!" from maroon monster "Thanks for posting results. P.s. you don't have to remove reverse check ball. That often makes reverse engagement too rough...especially in vehicles with raised line pressure. Best thing to do is just drill the reverse feed orifice slightly larger. It will give a smooth apply that's not too aggressive but not sluggish"

  • @mindciller

    Uhh. Less apply by drilling hole ... After dual feed you just drill a hole. Funny. Just use clutches that have oil grooves to prevent centrifugal apply or slice holes in the steels. Or just put a thin steel in to increase clutch clearance. Also get rid of the wave. I could go all day

    • @johnjhalliv5803
      @johnjhalliv5803 Před 6 lety +2

      You also didn't put heavier springs in which is what actually holds the piston back. It's like half a blow job
