  • Welcome to the General Surgery Residency Program at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler. The goal of our ACGME-approved residency program is to recruit and train confident, technically capable and well-rounded surgeons. The large clinical volume and the mix of academic, hospital-employed and private surgeons provide a comprehensive learning experience allowing our graduates to be successful in any setting. With more than 24,000 cases performed annually and a strong educational and academic program, our graduates can choose to practice general surgery or match in competitive fellowships.
UT Health East Texas is a 10-hospital system with more than 50 clinic locations covering East Texas. Our flagship hospital, UT Health Tyler, is a 502-bed level-1 trauma center serving as a tertiary referral center and will house the new residency program. We treat high-acuity patients who present late with diverse and complex surgical pathology.
Our program fosters intellectual development and independent residents who run our surgical services. Our faculty believes in education and understands the importance of autonomy and progressive responsibility. They want to see you plan and perform the entire procedure and mentor students and junior residents. We aim to graduate the type of surgeon others call upon.
We have set up a comprehensive basic science, clinical, robotic and simulation curriculum. Residents will have the opportunity to participate in scholarly activity and to develop executive leadership skills through participation in hospital committees and Quality Improvement programs.

Tyler offers great year-round weather, a low cost of living, no traffic and is very safe. It is a short drive to Dallas or Shreveport and has its own airport. Tyler has the amenities of a larger city (a nationally ranked barbeque scene, parks, zoos, and children’s museums), as well as state parks and lakes for the outdoor enthusiast, historic districts, and a confederate POW camp for the history buff. Plus, we’re the Rose Capital of the United States, and the Texas Rose Festival has to be seen to be believed.
Thank you for exploring our program and we look forward to reviewing your application.
