- A playthrough of Sega's 1995 Sega 32X arcade 3D fighting game, Virtua Fighter.
This video shows two different playthroughs on the medium difficulty level. The first is with Kage, and the second, played with Wolf, begins at 10:50.
This is pretty amazing for a game running off of the notorious muffin top. The graphics aren't arcade perfect, but they are more than clear and fluid enough to reproduce the feel of the original, and the sharp controls make it more responsive even than the initial Saturn release.
One really cool feature that you might not know about in the 32X edition: it is the only game on the 32X that supports widescreen, and I believe it was the only port of any VF game to support a 16:9 mode until Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution was released nearly ten years later on the PS2. It does stretch the HUD elements a bit, but the 3D looks great using the "squeeze" mode, as the option is referred to in the game options.

NintendoComplete (www.nintendocomplete.com/) punches you in the face with in-depth reviews, screenshot archives, and music from classic 8-bit NES games! - Hry
2:15 you know your early 3D fighter is obscenely well-coded when a port of an arcade game to a system addon of the Sega Genesis can actually detect that a fighter's upper body hung off of the arena just enough to roll back and off the edge.
From sega with love
He clipped through the ground texture though lmao
Also, this is the only game for the Sega Megadrive + 32X that supports widescreen!
@@thatretrocattt Yeah haha, there is no z-buffer in hardware here and software implementations are very difficult. In fact, this entire game's graphics are software based, as the 32x only added two 32-bit SH-2 CPUs and some extra color+PCM sound
@@alexkubrat386832X is an underrated console like CD.
VF is a really excellent port that trumps even the original Saturn version for game play. It's one of the few games that made owning a 32X worthwhile.
Hahaha thanks :) I'll take a look at some of your stuff.
I haven't played either version. How does this one compare to the Saturn version? Based on the technology alone, I cant see how this version is better than the Saturn.
Yeah. It's too bad I missed out on such a console. I also liked the tournament bracket and multi-color character feature it had in it.
SuperRetro Gamer, I too like watching his playthroughs, like *Ren & Stimpy: Space Adventures* for *Nintendo Game Boy*
NintendoComplete, never heard of this one, judging by the thumbnail, this game is *AWFUL*
I have to pay respect for the previous versions of VF. The first one I ever played was Virtua Fighter Kids on Saturn. The development of this game made a lot of things never possible before. The lighting on Sarah’s stage is awesome!
In 1995 my family owned a Playstation 1 and 32X. We had Tekken for the PS1 and Virtua Fighter for the 32X. I enjoyed Virtua Fighter a lot more. With it being faster, looser type play and having more moves and I liked when you knocked a player down being able to jump in the air and then attack them while there on the ground. Kage attacks being my favorite. Virtua Fighter was way ahead of all the other 3D fighters of the time in 1995. I loved Virtuua Fighter in the Arcades like the Japanese did.
Wow better than the Saturn version that's pretty cool that was a great version of the game back in the day 😀
Omg I love this game! I used to play VF2 in the arcade as a kid and OWNING as Wolf. Thanks for the nostalgia.
I can't get enough of those silly clanking sounds whenever you punch or kick Dural.
never realised how much this game used the "git down" sample from sonic cd
Aesthetically this game when I was 9 years old in 1996 was the best gaming experience of my life.
Man! Now I want a 32X
I really dig the choice of games played on this channel. My experience with the 32X seems to clash with many people's opinions of the add-on. It was THE way I got to play DOOM, and the best home versions of Virtua Racing, After Burner and Space Harrier in 1995. I have nothing but positive memories of the 32X, aside from maybe missing out on a late SNES classic (like Yoshi's Island or Super Mario RPG) in favor of uh, Metalhead.
Space Harrier Thanks! For as little as it got, a good half of the games were really worth playing. I loved Star Wars Arcade. Way better awesome to crap ratio than most consoles :D lol
Now there is Virtua Racing on the Switch, but I could buy a Genesis and a 32x just for VF and the VR exclusive tracks
I know this is a late comment. I was given a 32X for free. It was a pain in the ass learning how to set it up. Since it didn't have directions. Once we finally got it up and running it was great. This was also the first Doom I got to play. Even though I got it for PS1 a few years later. I loved the 32X. My brother and I played countless matches of V Fighter. Memories.
People complain about it simply because they should've focused on the Saturn. Super Tempo is an incredible 32X game and would've been an amazing Saturn launch title.
"And characters acts like they have..problems" AVGN Sega 32X video....if only 32X had more games like this, maybe it wouldnt flop?
The Nerd wouldn't understand because he isn't used to the types of culture outside the US..., which makes for hilarious improv on his scripts. ;)
"YEEEAAAH! Ooooo..."
it woulda still floped Sega of Japan screwed the 32x and Sega of America over.
@@Oddbrother oooooooo... YE-YE-YE-YEAH!
O-O-OOOOOOO!
Thank you for this!! Blast from the past. Brought me a smile.
Memories! Thanks for taking me back.
So this is the infamous Virtua Fighter? Looks kinda cool. Look at all those polygons! The characters have such a shiny look to them, it's great. Gotta love the 90s!!
This is Virtua fighter but this is not the original version you want to look for the arcade version then come back to this video.
How is this game infamous? Sure it looks dated, but it was the first of its kind.
not that it was 3d while other games was 2d.
Well.. This just the 32X port from 1996 it's good considering the hardware but it doesn't compare to the original arcade version from 1993, here's a gameplay video of the original version in real hardware: czcams.com/video/I-G6jqDx5_k/video.html
Fun fact sell wise the 32X was the best selling 5th Generation system in 1994 with 600,000 sells in the US compared to the 500,000 Sega Saturn sells in Japan and the 300,000 Playstation sells in Japan. In my opinion the US launch title line up on the 32X was better than the Launch title line up of the Japanese Saturn and Japanese Playstation. Im sure there is someone that worked with Sega that believes it was just not a good move to stop the support of the 32X in the US. In Japan fine but in the US if they would have kept supporting the system and putting out software. Who knows the 32X possibly could have outsold and been more popular than the Saturn here in the US. Not hating on the Saturn because its one of my favorite Systems of all time but I my self was very pleased and blown away with the 32X when my Parents bought me one in 94'. We were blown away by Virtura Racing Deluxe (which in my opinion is the best Virtura Racing port between the Genesis, 32X and Saturn). The 32X also arguably has the best Virtura Fighter 1 port too. Much Props to Sega Of America they knew what they were doing with the 32X. Even though the Sega Saturn launch in Japan was successful it was not more successful than the 32X launch around the same time in the US. Much respect to Sega as a whole they were killing it sell wise in 1994 with the 32X in the US and Sega Saturn in Japan.
Sarah's stage always reminds me of standing on top of a mountain or hill and you can see the light from cities or just lights in general
This game looks like if the virtual racing driver is got road rage
I wonder why some 32X games don't sound as great as this. VF clearly has more complex music and clearer voices, yet you saw stuff like MK2 that still had the same Genesis soundtrack
Lazy programmers, plus time constraints. MK2 could've been dang near arcade perfect if sculptured had done it on the 32x.
Even with how poorly Doom was music wise, still got to give the 32X version credit for the incredible sound design and running better than the Saturn version, which somehow sounds worse and has the same stock music as the PSX it based itself off of when it couldn't be hardware accelerated anymore.
@@BGizzle8098 But it would've sounded much worse, since they would've used GEMS
@@solarflare9078 They definitely didn't have to. The SH2 was capable of sample based music.
I tried to find this EVERYWHERE to buy.. no idea what happened to my 32x copy when I was a kid. It’s unattainable
Each time I see Lau, I think about Tao Pai Pai from Dragon Ball. This Virtua Fighter 32X version is really very good in its animation.
I personally preferred the Saturn version but the 32x version was great given the weaker hardware and less memory.
The samples in this game are fucking stunning in quality. They don't have that scratchy overly-broken-up sound that other games like Puyo Puyo or Street Fighter do.
Holy nostalgia Batman!
Virtua fighter is awesome
32x really shines in this game
The Sega 32x version of virtual fighters is better than the Saturn version. 😀👍🎮
Very surprising that VIRTUA FIGHTER on 32X is as great as the original port.
32x Port > Saturn 1st port
Maybe music is worse, but the widescreen feature. Yeah...
Pai was such a pain in my ass
I'm playing this on a 32x emulator and fuck me, can't get past Pai
This looks surprisingly competent for its age.
I should try this game! It looks great!
Please do. If you're into Street Fighter EX, try this.
I know this i isn't perfect but man the gameplay is very arcade like and it's a million times better than the crappy VF2 Genesis port.
the vf2 port is not that bad...I enjoy it once in a while. Let's say it's good for anyone, back in the days, who coudln't get a 32x or a saturn. Also, you can't compare both games really giving the hardware. VF on 32x is a great game and better than its saturn counterpart despite the latter system being more powerful.
At least Virtua Fighter 2 on Genesis worked without any issues lol
Don Scott VF2 Genesis is still awful crunchy sound, tons of missing moves, 2 characters missing, missing stages, it's basically VF1 with a VF2 resking even then it's missing moves from VF1.
Saturn VF1 might have some polygon flickering but at least it play faithfully to the original arcade version and so does the 32X version too which it's impressive considering the hardware.
Awesome video sub for life
i remember in the arcade version back in the days, i rarely got past round 6.
I would’ve love to see the 32x do some games like streetfighter alpha-2 may have been the best version.
Ah the memories! Not the best looking conversion but certainly very sharp in terms of playability. I also preferred this to the botched/rushed Saturn version. And about the "squeeze" mode: Reviews I read at the time claimed that this mode made the graphics smoother. I never noticed a difference, but even in 4:3 I preferred squeeze mode; it just looked tidier than the big, blocky normal mode!
Stanton Bentley Time has consumed your comment.
Stanton Bentley Yeah, I dunno about smoother... maybe blurrier because it just compresses a wider image into same resolution that the 4:3 mode runs at (that then has to be stretched by the TV itself), but even still, pretty amazing that it supported it all all!
NintendoComplete that reply has been consumed by time.
@@ExtremeWreck We don't care
Great port
This is hands down the best fighting game ever made.
Nice joke
@@YTWarrior100 Nice joke
Brilliant
How i can do movielist
Jeffry should've been a later-in-the-game fight; if he hands the right hit he can take half your health in just 1 blow.
I have this one 😜
This should've been on Sega Genesis Mini 2!!
A 42x game with widescreen support? Wasn't expecting that.
What the fuck? Guess what? We left something out. There's another cable which connects the Genesis to the 32x
Kage looks like Ryu Hayabusa, whose costume in one of the DOA games look similar to Kage's outfit. Akira is a mix of that guy from World Heroes, Jann Lee and Joe Hisashi. Sarah looks like Sofia from Battle Arena Toshinden and Nina from Tekken...
Sega dos what nintendo dont
Damn, why didn't Sega develop this as a CD32X game? Another wasted chance, along with Virtua Racing
Because they wanted to attract people directly to the 32x. To own the tower of power back in 94 was very rare indeed. The 32x was a much more affordable add-on than the Mega CD, so it did move off the shelves at the time and needed games that were for it alone. A cart CD package could of worked and would of cost nothing in terms of production cost however.

Virtua Fighter :
32 X
September 1995 in France.
For one of the very first 3D fighting games , it sure looks primitive .
I play video music saga games 90’s video game
Emulated ? Framerate isn't the same as real hardware
Nice play through gameplay,good game
The framerate is always 30FPS for VF1 on all platforms.
What's with the aspect ratio? It's... wrong.
It's not, I discussed it in the description.
@@NintendoComplete The game might officially support a 16:9 aspect ratio, but for a 32X game, this still feels... wrong.
Good port. My favourite version, besides the arcade, is still VF Remix on Saturn.
lol just played this yesterday at an arcade , gotta memorize the controls because otherwise you're gonna keep hitting the wrong buttons when it comes to the arcade version
Can the physics be more ragdoll and chaotic
Only the arcade version mattered but the Saturn wins for soundtrack imo.
Espera... ¿ESO ESTA CORRIENDO EN UNA 32X?
Tekken ?
Bruce Santiago czcams.com/video/jjzZbjcrtBE/video.html ?
Bruce Santiago
This is before Tekken.
The Lonely DJ im saying this is where tekken got there style of game from
Bruce Santiago
Oh OK so yes, Tekken used this style.
Well, it's clearly inferior to the arcade original, but still better than the butchered Saturn port!
Naamuuuu! Ugh. So wish I still had this game. But 32x was awful lol
