Gene Vincent, such an overlooked great artist, so sad that he needed to go to Great Britain and Europe to be appreciated. He was never given opportunities after the crash that killed Eddie Cochran, plus it severly handicapped him the rest of his life.

@@griswald7156 Yes- it damaged his already bad leg, which was nearly amputated after a bad motorcycle accident . Vincent limped the rest of his life and had constant pain from the leg .

There are so many wonderful things with the version. It brings to mind late 1950's early 1960's dances...and nostalgia. What a dreamy combo of his voice and the bands playing. I really enjoy when an artist makes a song their own. As you say EVERYONE knows and mostly loves the Judy Garland version- but there is room for more than one version and this one is tops! Thanks for sharing such a sweet and dreamy version of a classic on this Friday.

What a cool version of this song. Gene Vincent was part of the rockabilly era. Elvis' early music at Sun Records is done in this style. Another great artist who was a friend of Gene Vincent was Eddie Cochran. He had a lot of great hits such as "Summertime Blues". Tragically he died at only 21 in a car accident.

What a beautiful analysis of a beautiful version of “Over the Rainbow.” I agree with what you said about Gene’s voice being like silk with his applications of vibrato, glissando and his overall consistency in his delivery.
You reminded me about a couple of things-a book that I have about 1950s rock n roll and something that I read recently about rock n roll’s influences. When rock n roll first emerged in the 1950s, people were quick to dismiss its musical aspects as well as the musicians’ abilities. I believe that in this song, Gene proved his vocal abilities went beyond the rock n roll genre. Fil, your analysis videos are always educational and this was no exception. Thanks for providing this awesome experience! 🎶

This diamond should be in your collection.
I recommend making a reaction to Diana Ankudinova (19), one of the best vocalists in the world, who has a unique voice - a dramatic contralto with polyphonic overtones. Many CZcamsrs have made more than 13 thousand reactions to Diana over the past couple of years. CZcamsrs especially liked Diana's performances on TV shows - 'You are Super' and 'ShowMASKgoOn'. - Can't Help Falling in Love, Crow, Personal Jesus, Wicked Game, Human. Diana sings mostly in English, Russian and French. She has also sung in other languages including Spanish, German and Arabic.
I was happy to see your reaction to Diana!

      Best choice from Diana's channel:
      Can’t Help Falling in Love

      - total 814 reactions to this performance by Diana.
Total number of reactions to Diana, about 13 thousand reactions, all added to my playlists.
Yesterday Diana released a music video for her first author's song Revelation.
This song was the first completely original song by Diana Ankudinova, she herself wrote the lyrics and composed music.
Several dozen reactions (total 98 reactions), all reactionaries are shocked once again, but now not only by Diana's voice, but also by a talent that can create not cheap one-time music, but hits for all time.
Meet Diana Ankudinova and her song Revelation.

Great video. It's a strange thing when you get rock n rollers doing standards. The Beatles doing Besa Me Mucho for instance!! I love this version of Over The Rainbow though. I've never heard it before. I don't like the twinkly backing bits though (sorry not technical). When you played the instrumental bit after analysing Genes lovely almost ethereal voice to me it really jarred. This should've been put out as a single without soooo much twinkly tinkly bits. Gene has always been a hero of mine. I have the DVD of his ill fated 1969 British tour.....so sad the way he was treated . That documentary is available on CZcams - Also available is Gene at the Cavern Club in 1965.

He became really addicted to pain killers and alcohol in the 60s until his death. That probably held him back in terms of progress at his craft. Apparently his habits didn't affect his reliability when touring, he didn't miss a show.
The reason why he took pain killers and drank was because his leg hurt very badly due to accidents. His first accident was before his career took off, although that might've been a war injury. And then the car crash worsened his leg.

This is the first time I have ever heard Gene Vincent perform this song. I know the Beatles performed this song on July 26, 1962 at the Cavern Club. Don't get excited because the tape sounds horrible. It was auctioned off and I believe Paul McCartney purchased the recording. It makes the Star Club, Hamburg, sounds like it was digital recording. I know they did "Where Have You Been (All My Life)" and the version that was released sounds way better than the bootleg version. Recently I heard Gene Vincent's version of "Unchained Melody" and I thought I read that Peter Sellars was the first that recorded it.

Thank you for doing this video. I always thought Gene Vincent was a master interpreter of ballads, even though he may be best known for hard driving rock and roll. So I can only agree on everything you say. As you said I note as bit out of tune can be a part of the overall expression. I would like to add, that it is also because of certainty and being convincing. In contrast to an unexperienced singer that is kind of of searching for the notes, and you can almost hear them thinking "is this what I'm supposed to do?", with Gene everything sounds like it should be so.
Thanks again for this video. I would sure love some more videos about Gene Vincent.

Hi Fil , have you ever heard Billy Thorpe ( from Australia )? His version of this great tune is in my humble (?) opinion is even better than this one and Genes version probably inspired him to do his as it was released at approximately the same time ! I would love you to feature it on your show !

Have you been paying any attention to what Robert Fripp has been getting up to on CZcams? This was released today:
