Why is Galaxy's Edge so EMPTY on Opening Week?

  • Disney was fearing the worst when it came to crowd expectations for Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge. Rumors of internal projections that the park would reach capacity for the first eight weeks of the opening also had fans wondering how Disney Parks logistics would handle the opening of the company's first Star Wars Land. As you know, they handed it with a five-prong approach:
    - extensive blackout days for castmembers and annual passholders.
    - creating new and limited time attractions in Disney California Adventure to lure away crowds. These include bringing back Soarin' Over California, adding Mickey's Philharmagic to Hollywood Land, and the addition of shows like The Tale of the Lion King.
    - A three week preview period which required reservations to enter the land for 4-hour timed periods.
    - Followed by a boarding pass process, which would allow Disneyland guests to enter a virtual queue via the Disneyland app to enter the land as crowds dissipate.
    - Disney even built a new huge parking garage and tram loading area to help accommodate the expected masses (the tram loading area is now open and can be seen in my video above, while the new parking lot is expected to be open any day now).
    On the day that the land opened without reservations, it hit capacity and the boarding process happened as promoted. But then something strange happened. Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge has not required boarding groups since the launch day and Disneyland has been strangely unbusy. We traveled to the park earlier this week, and not only was Disneyland empty but Galaxy's Edge was the most uncrowded I've seen it ever.
    So what is happening here? Did Disney scare potential tourists away from visiting the park with all these precautionary logistical procedures? This could be a real possibility, and the news stories of Galaxy's Edge hitting capacity within minutes of opening were much further reaching than the social buzz of the parks being empty since.
    Or was it that almost all the annual passes are blocked out aside from the Signature and Signature plus, the two top of the line passes. It's worth noting that Disney has since changed their course and told Castmembers they are not longer blocked out from Disneyland this Summer (aside from July 4th). In addition to that, Disneyland sent an email to Annual Passholders announcing a new summertime deal that would allow passholders to bring a friend to the Disneyland Resort with the purchase of a 1-Day Park Hopper ticket for $99. It seems clear that Disney's plan backfired and the mouse house is now trying whatever they can to get people into the parks.
    But the real question is, why are people staying away? Disneyland is notoriously more of a local park. Unlike Disney World, Anaheim is filled with local annual passholders. So maybe blocking all the lower and mid-tier passes, alongside castmember access, is to blame? It seems very likely to me that this is the answer as rides from Disneyland to Disney California Adventure have had some of the shortest standby lines I've ever seen. For example, the other day Radiator Springs Racers had a 10-15 minute wait.
    Perhaps tourists are staying away because the second ride, Rise of the Resistance, has not yet opened. Why plan a trip to Anaheim when the land is only half open? I could totally see that having an effect on vacation travel plans.

      I’d like to suggest that people might be a bit more savvy than is suggested here. I know that the amount of available merchandise is low-why? Because I’ve watched this video and others and have read the comments. Speaking for myself, if I were planning a trip to Galaxy’s Edge, I’d want to know what to expect as the expense and travel time would be considerable.
      It’s also standard operating procedure for me these days to find reviews of any new products of interest, whether it’s a smart tv or a transformer figure. A little time spent might save a customer from considerable disappointment.

    I have something of a harsh view of Galaxy's Edge, but I've enjoyed tagging along with Ordinary Adventures as the crew explores the attraction, and there's nothing wrong with the coverage!
    I don't know very much about the general Disney park experience, but I'd speculate that some may see Galaxy's Edge as a glorified and very expensive souvenir shop, and that it's hard to justify a visit to Galaxy's Edge in and of itself. And other than expensive souvenir shopping about the set, there's a couple of themed places to eat and drink, a rather dubious ride/group arcade game and the privilege of being threatened with a pat down by armored guards...I'm not sure if that's enough of a draw. That last may provoke flashbacks to bad treatment by airport security on the way to visit Galaxy's Edge!

    I think these three things are what's causing Disney to be "empty". Locals are staying away from the park assuming there'd be way more tourists this summer because of Galaxy's Edge. Disney assumed millions of people would come flocking in to see the new land, so literally the only people in the parks currently are the ones with day tickets and the most expensive passes. The people who have the lower tier passes also probably don't wanna pay $149 per ticket just to go see the land. I'm hoping it stays like this through the fall, because Disney on a hot summer day is no fun lol

      Agree, I know Disney raise prices every now and then to prevent crowds, but also make even more profit, cause even if it's expansive, die-hard Disney fans are willing to pay for expansive vacations. But they are definitely outpricing a lot of people.
      Also while the land looks really well built and aesthetically pleasing, it has like one thrill ride and the rest looks like a glorified souvenir shop (I've seen reports and videos of how everything in the land is ridiculously expansive).
      While we're at it, if I have to pay thousands of dollars for a vacation, might as well go to Disney World, where I can actually enjoy four theme parks, as opposed to two for roughly the same entry price.

      People that visit during busy days talk about never growing back and hating their time there.
      If Disney did not increase prices the parks would be sold out year round. Further you would sometimes be turned away even after paying if the park you choice to go to was at the fire code limit. Only way to avoid that would be to sell each park separately and not alow annuall passes at all. That's just how fire codes work.
      Further the over crowding would mean the staff would never have enough time to keep up with cleaning up behind the guests and it would get messier and messier each day. The parks would be in shambles after 3 years of the over crowding and probably lead to it geting shut down.

    I think Disney kicked themselves by blocking everything like they did, but a few things could have played into the lower draw that you experienced. Since the park/land is basically a giant marketplace set in the SW universe, running out of some of the most popular items had to of hurt the draw. Blocking visitors already there enjoying other parks/lands had to of hurt the draw because some of the bigger/more hardcore SW fans that could have made an opening were most likely present during the reservation period. Having close to no attractions outside of shops definitely hurts draw IMO because casual fans/current visitors might not want to visit a place without rides/performances/live interactions with the biggest SW characters.
    IMO, the lack of rides/included performances will hurt long term draw to the SW land. I have to be honest and say that I was very disappointed when I realized the place is pretty much a giant souvenir shop VS a more interactive SW experience with attractions like rides/spot performances/live interactions like most of the other Disney parks/lands. With that being said, I would love to pick up the Legacy saber hilts....I just don't know if I will be able to make it to one of the parks to pick them up anytime soon. Hopefully Disney continues to grow the experience to motivate folks to go and/or return for another round.

Who knows, maybe they have plans on adding more interactive experiences into the current park to keep folks coming back. I personally would love to see even more of the OT if/when they build onto the current park. I have already seen a nice chunk of OT nods littered throughout the current park, but send folks to Luke/Obi Wan's home, Yoda's hut, the bridge of a Star Destroyer, the cockpit of an X-Wing/Tie FIghter, walk through a skiff hovering over the Sarlacc Pit on your way to a ride with Boba Fett and that will drive a lot of people, myself included, crazy. Loving your channel! You guys are great fun! Thanks for all the videos, subed! Do they allow much time to sit at Holo chess table - is it a big rush to get to it etc before going on ride? I’d want to spend time just looking around and get lots of photos and videos. Also, how would you rate the droids against the Sphero ones, besides the size?

    • @OrdinaryAdventures
      @OrdinaryAdventures  Před 5 lety +1

      Other people want to take photos there so you do feel a little rushed but you can take your time. I like the r2 over the sphero one because of the size. Thanks for watching!

      @Time Bandit they open it mid day, have been for a while, you can start waiting before park open usually around 8. The wait times vary between 2.5 and 3.5 hours usually on like a week day. Most of the wait comes from the ride having technical difficulties or weather. I rode it opening day and it's worth however many hours you end up waiting, however the crowds of people aren't helping with the TM's working out the kinks.

  • @barbaralemere5183
    @barbaralemere5183 Před 5 lety +3

    I think the crowd size hype, scared some people off until later in the year when the second ride opens, plus, it is hugely expensive to do a lot of the things in Galaxy's edge so unless you are a passholder and live relatively near Disneyland, you aren't going to go there more than once or twice in a year. Plus, Earthquakes this week.

    I was there last week. It was amazing. It took around an hour to ride the Smugglers Run but well worth it. The attention to detail was outstanding. Food you can get anywhere, you don't have to eat there. Merch was awesome, some really cool stuff.

    My one experience so far on that ride: brown engineer.. my fellow engineer and I were kicking butt; however, the pilots and gunners just weren't into it.. MAJOR hint of how your team is going to do: when he says 'jump to light speed' and the pilot says 'wait.. what?' and you have to keep tapping the gunner's shoulder in front of you so she pushes the buttons when she is supposed to.. ugh!

    Kind of glad its a bit more chilled, people dont need to rush to see everything as you can spend a lot longer in the park, not " o i only have 4 hours i need to hurry to the cantina" mindset

    I know that I didn’t want to go simply cause I assumed it would be a complete zoo! Now I see this and I’m like, welp I missed the one chance to go when the park is slow and didn’t spend half the day waiting in lines. Who knew lol 🤷🏼‍♀️
