Very good! Your persistence and that you went all the way to get it is very helpful to see. I wish I'd been that persistent with an SD plasma I found on the street; it was in far worse shape but I should have done a proper burn out at least. Those always crack me up!
+wdavem I guess you missed the last one, where I blew the crap out of it with a big ass neon sign transformer. I repaired the power supply only to find that the hybrid IC on the Y sustain board was bad. It was an old SD display, so I gave it a send off. I have another LG panel here, also with 2 bad boards, so I will send that one off is a light show some day soon. It has been cluttering up my shop for far too long.
the set I have with the HDMI input does the same thing when I unplug the cable that runs to the DG board but I changed out the board with a used working one and it still does the same thing. would this be caused by a bad D board? P board? I don't have any hair left from pulling it out with this TV

Interesting repair process - also, interesting how they converted voltages from 12 V to 9,2 V to 30 V. Makes you think that when they started out designing the unit they didn't know what voltages they were going to need in the final product ;)
+DrCassette I plan to do a short theory video on this circuit to explain why they did it this way.I can assure you the engineers knew exactly what they were doing, and I can also assure you that even though it seems more complex, it was done to shave a few pennies off the cost of the design.I'll sit down with the print and the camera and do a quick deep dive on that power supply soon.
It's a buck boost converter. The coil that shorted was part of the choke that filtered out ripple. Totally unnecessary as it was for analog tuners. The only reason I jumpered it was to get the tuning voltage back. The voltage is a little lower so it won't tune about about channel 30, but no big deal. There are no analog signals anymore except the ones I generate on my in house system, and I only have channels set on ch 4,5,7,9,12 and 27.
I have a Panasonic 50' plasma Vienna tv model number th50px75u it's blinking 12 times then goes off before that I can see my menu and hear sounds but then nothing is this fixable and how much

I have a Panasonic model No TX-50BL6B which as a one blink fault, what happens is that the TV turns on for about 3 seconds then go's off and blinks once, watching over videos on CZcams they say it's a P board replacement, I really appreciate it if you'd give your thoughts on this thank you

Not sure if you still answer questions on this. But what’s easiest fix here? Cut the line to pin 1 or remove the shorted filter?

Very interesting repair and diagnosis! I am a bit confused about the filter short though - was it a cap that shorted? I was confused by your comment that you replaced the shorted filter with a wire - wire = short also? Or did you just bypass the filter circuit completely with the wire? Great vid, love the channel as always!
+# charis The battery may have blown it up - but it must have been faulty before already because otherwisely the TV would have worked just fine.

+GadgetUK164 The component that shorted is called a delay line, and is nothing more than a very thin wire wound on a non ferrous core. They are using it likely to eliminate any high frequency harmonics from the dc-dc converter. It is shielded, and the shield is grounded. It was shorted to ground. The 9 volt supply feeds the inductor circuit from the dc-dc converter, so a short on this component not only kills the 30v supply, it also shorts the 9v supply. This is an interesting design, and I think a separate short deep dive video, with the schematic and an explanation on how this circuit works and why they did it this way will be done to help those of you interested in how this works understand it. Will probably do that tonight while I still have all the prints handy.

+Koffi BananNo there was no visual indication that the part had failed. Had I let it burn more then it probably would have been scorched, but as soon as I saw the smoke I knew where to put the meter, and it showed a short on the 30 volt power line. SO I unplugged the tuner, as that is what the 30 volt supply is for, the varactor diode tuning voltage, and the short was still there. There was only 1 component on that supply, and it was right where the smoke came from. The meter proved that out pretty quick, however don't get me wrong, this bloody little filter took me a long time to find. A search on the net shows that nobody else has come across this problem, so I would imagine that other TVs that this problem has happened to have just been disposed of. Now that we know that this component causes an issue, hopefully people will find the problem, and fix a few more of these classic plasma sets.I have a soft spot for plasma, as it was the only flat screen technology that I had formal training on, and even though they are incredibly complex, I find the technology, and just the way they operate is cool.

Plasma sets use a metal chassis and back to shield them.
Just got an almost identical set to this from the good old kerbside shopping mall lol (Can't tell exact model as the sticker is gone, but it's very similar in looks apart from having SCART in place of 3 of the component inputs & definitely older as no HDMI... Naturally, after drying out and removing a slimy slug from the back it works fine so presumably just been retired for something newer and "better". Almost disappointed TBF, was kinda hoping for at least a little bit of diagnosis fun for the evening! Think it's a keeper though, heavy, power hungry and standard definition... Perfect workshop set for me! Might be cheeky and go back to ask for the stand though, you're right it's a pain when they don't have one!
Incredible picture for such an old set! I usually find these old Pannys are easy to diagnose, but not in this case and in the end welll worth fixing even though they may add a few dollars to your electric bill!
+James Last These sets do have a very good picture. Plasma sets do last a long time. Old ones were rated 60,000 hours, newer ones 100,000 hours for the panel. Now they were prone to screen burn if images were left static for a long time. Power consumption wise it isn't that bad. I did do a comparison to modern plasma, LCD, DLP and LED-DLP. Plasma prior to 2000 were power pigs, but this one, and more modern ones are not that bad.They got a bad rap in the media, by incompetent journalists with no idea what they are talking about.They wee the max 420 watts and they thing power pig because the equivalent LCD of the day was 340 watts. What they don't understand is that an LCD draws full power all the time, just like a projection set because the lamp, or backlight needs to run at full power.Plasma is dynamic, depending on screen brightness. On average a plasma will draw about 50% of its max rating. So a plasma rated at 400 watts will draw on average 200. Sure if you are watching hockey or ice skating, or skiing where the background is white they will draw closer to max power, but on average viewing it is not that bad.

Check your ground screws on the boards, and check for bad caps in the power supply with ESR meter.
I'm impressed with your persistence. Had I made it to the point where it worked without the analog tuners, I'd have happily put the cover back on.
+Jeff Ebenal I plan to sell that set, so I didn't want to send it out with no analog tuners, just in case whoever buys it only has basic analog cable. They still offer that here.It has a fantastic picture for an ED display, and besides I "needed" to figure out what the root cause to the failure was. It is just my engineers mind at work.
12voltvids hello I have the same TV but with the HDMI port on it and when I turn it on the screen has a dim soft glow the Y&Z sus have the red LEDs on and it responds to the remote power on and off only I checked my voltages and everything looks great. I'm about to pull my hair out lol
The panel glow is a good thing. That means that your panel drive is there. So you have to look into the video circuits.

Start by checking power supply voltages. You may be able to find a troubleshooting guide by searching on google. That is where I find my service data. Believe it of not I too am a rookie on these sets too. I cut my teeth working on all the old TVs and AV gear. Until I got this set I had never worked on one of these beasts, so I was learning as I went along. I have fixed perhaps 30 flat panel TVs, but thousands of analog gear. I have to laugh at some of my comments. I said I was getting rid of this one. NOT I ended up keeping it for my shop. It looks great, even though it is only SD.

Yes or the analog tuner would not have worked. That is the source for the BT or tuning B+. It goes through a buck converter to be boosted to about 33V. Without the coil the BT comes up a little low as the coil acts like an inductor, and filters out some ripple that remains. So the analog tuners won't tune above about channel 30 or so. No big deal. There is no more analog broadcasting, and my highest channel modulator I have in my system is channel 27. My other modulators are 2, 4, 5,7, 9,12 so for what I am using this set for in my home is fine. It is just a TV to watch in the garage when I am working.

So it was an SMD inductor filter on the tuner board? You just jumped it with a wire? Where do you get your schematics from? I can't find schematics on the internet. I had a client that had a CRT tv where the relays were working, the TV made a constant, repetitive clicking board. I troubleshooted the power supply, and found a shorted electrolytic capacitor (49000 at 500WV), which cost me $20.08. I was not going to charge the client for the two hours of troubleshooting since I could not fix the TV. Should the client have paid me for the defective capacitor?

If I don't fix something I don't leave new parts in. I pull them. I have very few schematics. I didn't have one for this or any flat panel TV's I have fixed.

For audio equipment hi fi engine is a good source.
I just Google and dont fall for the click bait where they want you to install something. Flat panel TV are hard to find. I normally end up working blind. I dont do much in the way of flat screen work. Mostly 2 channel audio.

+saarike Yes this one was relatively difficult. It is easy to fix problems that are well documented, and everyone sees them. When you are the first to discover a fault, that is where the years of experience and knowledge comes into play. This was such a trouble, and I hope this will help a few people fix these sets. Even though this TV is not a full HD set it has an excellent picture and actually looks superior to my 1080p TVs when viewing old content from VHS and 8mm.The difference between seeing those formats at their native resolution, and up-scaled to 1080 is striking.
All what you say is true. It's fine that you and other fine people share some of their knowledge. I have also only 720p 42 inch quite old plasma tv. It's Philips year 2008 model. Picture still quite good. Ok. I have also LG vhs-player, that works. :)
Hey, nice video. I have to guess its the mainboard. I have a panasonic th42p80e. And had a dead chip on the hdmi path.. it was working perfectly on scart and other connections but no screen on hdmi. I ordered a second hand board for 40euro's by a retailer that supposedly tested the board. Reinstalled it and now i get 12 red flashes in stead of any screen... Im guessing they send me a damaged board...

if you don't need the analog tuners to function then you can simply remove the coil. since I still use analog distribution for SD sources I wanted the analog tuners to work so I jumpered the coil to provide the 37v Bruning voltage.
Well I messed up..I broke the coil next to it also :(

This was very very common on these sets.. Used to see this in the field. The Toshiba sets that were made by panasonic around this time had the same issue with the tuner board. I believe it was a shorted capacitor.. used to replace them all the time..
Not on this one. They used a delay line as a choke to remove ripple from the buck converter they use to boost the 9V to 33V for the varactor tuner.I imagine the reason they use a delay line as opposed to a ferrite core coil is for the shielding effect as a delay line is essentially just a coil of fine wire wrapped around a non conductive not ferrous core and then has a ground shield around it to prevent ingress of other signals, and radiation of signals passing through the delay. Anyway the delay line shorted pulling the 33v line to ground and shutting the set off. I just removed it and jumpered a wire over it so the analog tuners work again. I wanted the analog tuners working as I use analog modulators at my house to send things like the output from my security cameras, and the analog output from my cable box throughout the house, along with the digital signals from the antenna. Naturally this set will only tune the 6 analog carriers I insert on the cable, but it is a SD set anyway. It now lives in my workshop and I use it for testing VCRs and other SD devices. It will accept an HD signal through the component or DVI/HDMI input but being a 852X480 panel that is all it is ever going to display. Still looks great, and when I had it given to me it still had the bill of sale to the original owner stuck to the back. It came from the shop I used to work for a year after I left. The price? $7,000.00!
In the field these sets were under extended warranty so we did not change the actual components, we changed the boards until they became no longer available. So what component was that? what was shorted?
LC4371 it is a small coil. You can see it at 22:57 in the video.
Ok so the coil was shorted against the grounding shield... it's been many many years since I worked on this one.. I mostly work on the new sets.. feel free to ask if I can help

At 23:05 you will see the board where I removed the shorted part. I jumped a wire over the bad coil, to supply the B+ tuner boost to the tuner.At 23:46 I point out the trace where the coil was mounted. Just jumper the traces to supply power to the tuners. If you don't need the analog tuners to operate it is OK to leave the shorted coil out. Then just the video, component and DVI (HDMI) input will work. I wanted the tuners working as I use analog RF signals for in house signals over coax for things like my security cameras.

No I replaced it with a piece of wire. The coil actually removes some ripple that makes it past the capacitor in the buck converter. By jumping the coil the tuning voltage is slightly low, so the tuner won't cover the high band properly, but since analog broadcasting no longer exists, and all I need it to tune is channels 2,4,5,7,9,12 and 27 which are the possible channels inserted on my cable from my modulator array it tunes high enough. It won't go above UHF 30 but as I said most people would not need the analog tuners anyway because analog broadcasting was shut off in 2009, and most cable companies no longer have any analog channels running anymore. So a digital box is required, and even if the analog output was used from a digital box, only channel 3 would be needed.

Those little devices are a known failure in a lot of Panasonic plasma sets. Lately they produced a tech tip that told about them shorting.

At 23:55 you can see where I removed LC4371. That coil was shorted to ground. I jumped a wire over it, and it fixed the set. Analog tuners working now, not that there is any analog signals to watch, but I still have analog signals from modulators in my house, so I use analog for SD material all the time.
The machinery used to make toroids is ingenious; I still don't know how they make the small ones.

@@KylesDigitalLab yes this is the one that sits to the right of my work bench and is used as the test monitor for video gear. I also watch tv on it. It's from 2003 which makes it 18 years old and still looking great. It's also the most complex set i have seen. Glad i don't have to work on them.
Plasma TVs don't really draw that much power. People think a big old TV must draw tons of power, but that's nonsense. A modern graphics card for cryptocurrencies draws more!
@@sadderthanyou7793 they sure do. A old 50" 1080 750 watts and a 65 closer to 900. My 63 draws 700 and it is an energy star model. By comparison an led set pulls perhaps 80. Who cares about a crypto mining station. Average people don't have those and anyone that does is a bloody fool because they will pay more for the electricity they burn up that they can ever recover. Saw a news article that said that to do 1 transaction of a Bitcoin to buy a 2.00 cup of coffee uses about 5.00 in electricity to process that transaction once you factor in the air conditioning required to keep the ASIC crypto machines cool.

help me fix my Panasonic set its a plasma like this one . the component video I get no signal on video just sound hdmi works fine . sd stations no video and the composite video the same thing just sound no video . My digital stations on the set comes in fine . im told there a falt on the dg board
+ducklandwikeno Yes that sounds like where the fault is. The A-D board is the analog to digital conversion, where analog signals are digitized.Make sure your power supply to the A-D board is correct. A missing voltage will cause this type of fault. Also don't overlook a shorted coil like I had on this set. That killed a voltage for the analog tuner, and ultimately shut the set down. If the digital tuner works, and HDMI input works you have just answered your own question. You know that everything on the digital side, and the panel works, as well as all the drive boards. The problem in in the A/D conversion board somewhere.

THis one was rather confusing to me as you had to work on it for over eight hours trying to troubleshoot and figure it out. I do understand these kind of problems but it was kind of confusing to me.

No I took out the bad coil that was shorted, and put a jumper wire over where it was. It was just to remove ripple from the boost converter. The analog tuner works perfect in this set. I use it as a shop TV, and I do use the analog tuber to tune in my in house analog distribution network. I have modulators on channel 4,5,7,9,12 and CATV17.
I too print out the schematics rather than view them on some digital device. Much nicer to follow schematics on paper.
+MrPitatom If you think following a schematic on a tablet or computer is a problem, you never lived through the microfiche era. What a bloody joke that technology was. Had to have this big microfiche unit on the bench, and had to find the circuitry on the card, and slide it back and forth to trace anything because the projection screen wasn't big or clear enough to see an entire print at once. Dust on the film, or scratches would show up as phantom traces. Oh it was bloody awful garbage, and all the major companies, RCA, Sony, Panasonic did this back in the 80's. Did it with their parts lists too.
I remember microfiche back in high school. Difficult to use and glad to see it go.
I remember trouble shooting on a B-52D model bomber. worked on it for twelve hours troubleshooting it. Found and repaired the short. Was it worth it, yes, you bet. I wanted to get it out of the way so it could fly it's missions. There's the paying World and then there's the real World of doing it, the work for self satisfaction of saying I can do it. When you finish the repairs sell the wet for what you can get for it.
This is my shop TV now. It is only a standard definition set but it is good enough for the work shop. Has a great picture, and the person that originally bought this set paid 6999.95 for it, plus tax.

The chances of being electrocuted is pretty slim. You would have to try real hard to do it. You can get bit if you stick your fingers in when it is on but that is more of an annoyance then anything. If you want to play with dangerous stuff work on tube gear.
@@12voltvids - My grandpa worked as a TV & Radio repair and salesman 1950 -1980, Zenith, GE, etc.. So much tube gear! His shop was filled with so much cool stuff! You do some great repair work!

Well lets see here. Average plasma runs well over 10 years with no problems at all. Average life of led set 2 years.
Lg had some reliability problems when they went to the ipm design but the panasonic's have been very good. Loose ground screws biggest fault.
Even my old samsumg 63" is now 10 years old has almost 30,000 hours on the panel and still works as good as the day that 2 of us struggled to mount that heavy bitch on the wall. (179 lbs)
Incidentally as you probably saw it was a little power filtering coil in the analog tuner that failed on this. I use this set in my work shop now and it gets plenty of hours. It is 14 years old now.
Panasonic is not a good product, I have a panasonic plasma 42 inches and didnt last long enough to compensate for its price and it gives 12 red blinking light,,,the death signal.
