  • Oris released their Kermit green collab version of the Oris Propilot X at watches and wonders this year.
The Oris Propilot X defies traditional expectations of a pilot's watch, boasting a design that sets it apart in numerous ways. Gone are the oversized numerals and prominent crown, replaced by a sleek and ultramodern aesthetic. But the question remains: Does its unconventional style compromise its functionality and appeal? I'll delve into the details and offer my personal take on this timepiece, whether it's in striking shades of grey, vibrant salmon, or kermit lime green.
Get ready to embark on a journey through the Oris Propilot X, as I share my honest thoughts and impressions.
Don't forget to let me know what you think of this remarkable watch in the comments section below!
    Cheers!!!

Nice video. These colors make more sense if you’re comparing them to the hue of titanium imo. There seems to be one for everyone. Personally I wish it were more legible for being a pilot watch.

Agree. The colours have to be desaturated for this rugged tool aesthetic. Except for the lime green which is completely out of left field... 😃😃😃

"When will it be worn?" Well, after the honeymoon period...at least the last few days at the end of the month and the first few days at the beginning of the month, to catch the Kermit in the window.

Honestly the only watch that I'm really excited about compared to other expensive watches. I like that it's not made to be flashy in the traditional sense. Toned down and let the design speak for itself. I'd get the grey one.

I think you are writing your own sales pitch . . . . Earlier you encouraged us to think about **fun** watches . . . (I have now found something)
I think you should be brave and also consider more extreme watches e.g. wooden cases, very bright colours, unusual shapee, etc, etc -
Please provide a structured view spanning across the **extreme** spectrum . . .
The Kermit watch would be a gentler introduction **for you** into fun or more extreme watches . . .
You know it should be added to your watch collection 🙂

  • @niels-henrikfyhringmeier7669

    Great review and insight.
To be honest I think it’s the best new watch Oris makes. Everything with this watch design is a distinctive choice that Oris has made, and Rolf even mentions in an interview on CZcams, that it is a pilots-inspired watch.
First, an edgy case and bracelet in full matte titanium, but still very fluently formed primarily coming from the bracelet.
Secondly, it has a pretty large dial with a chapter ring that caves inwards, and gives better legibility in low light where a straight chapter ring would cut of some of the smaller minute markers from light, which happens sometimes on my Oris Aquis.
Printed markers which lots of people complain about, and the primary thing people bash this watch for, but if the Speedmaster, Reverso and Big Pilot can get away with it, I reckon so can this. Printed white markers are also more legible than applied indices, because they will almost always look white no matter the angle you look at it, whereas some angles the applied indices would disappear in the dial, because of certain lighting.
Matte hands and dial also ensure better legibility, and the proportions of this dial are spot on in my opinion.
Big thematic crown with small ridges that makes the it really easy to handle.
An interesting, practical and intuitive clasp that is pretty beefy and well made without being bulky in my opinion.
This is the classic pilots watch in the new age, an IWC pilot in new and modern clothes.
An original idea and design with cues from pilots watches and new industry challenging in-house movement from an independent watchmaker that is as old as Rolex, for the same price as a Tudor.
Nothing really looks like this watch, the closest thing is the Globemaster, but it still looks vastly different.
This could become a trendsetter like the Royal Oak, a titanium sports watch.
Is it perfect? Maybe not, but I think it’s close enough. In time it could become an icon.
    My probably unpopular opinion.
    Thanks for the content 😊👍

We’re totally in the same page - To me Oris has the cojones to just do what they think is cool and this watch is a clear example of that. In a world where all pilots watches look so similar, I commend Oris for their choices

I got the grey one recently as a trade for an Aquaracer Pro 300 I got tired of. Technically, it is astounding, but in person makes a less of a wow effect in distance and in mid distance than most stainless steel watches. It truly shines observed closeby and it is nearly non-existent on the wrist. Perfect size, and I like to think of it as a perfect (bit quirky) alternative to the OP line of watches. The only downside is the clasp. No micro-adjustment and though original in appearance and totally different than what is usually found in Tudor (as a class leader in clasps), feels a bit cheap.

I watched this video probably 8 times; but now am a owner of the kermit and come back to this. Great video; keep em coming!
comparing it with the pink and blue one in person: almost no pictures do the dial justice; the green is (other than the pink/blue) more "shiny"; changing depending on light and angle from green to yellow-ish where the others are way more flat/desaturated/mat. I debated with myself about the green, because it is definetly not an easy thing to commit to. Who is targeted with this one? You described it really well i guess: Not a pilot, and not someone who wants a pilots-watch. It is a bit hard to read in sunlight, does not match the classic criteria for a pilots watch and boyohboy is that green standing out. Where i struggle a bit with your conclusion "Fun Watch": For me, it is not a fun-watch. I'm a white t-shirt, jeans and sneaker kind of person; 99% of the time. and there, the green is a nice touch. I get that it is out of place on a tuxedo or suit. but there is a ton of people that are having the means for that price-range that are not bound to the dresscode that was associated with people spending several ks on a watch. over the last decade, a lot of fields became way more casual-dressing then they were before. Making this more of a day-to-day watch with a standout-color than a fun watch that comes out every other weekend. And in there are probably another 2 camps: bought it for the kermit, and the other ones just licking the watch and having kermit is a nice add-on. I'm in the second camp, but looking forward to kermit's visit tomorrow ;-) as said, nice video, well done!

Good point on the colour - For me a pink shirt at work is an everyday shirt. For others it’s the shirt they wear as their party shirt.
At the end of the day, you wear what makes you feel good. The oris? Banger of a watch. For me though? Doesn’t go with the pink shirt - lol 😀

I love Oris, haven't bought one yet but I am planning to. Have had the 40mm Big Crown Pointer Date with the grey/blueish dial on my radar for a long time, but I have to admit, I'm leaning more and more to this ProPilot X with the slate blue dial. I think it's a very versatile watch, sporty and modern on the bracelet (which has a hint of 'genta' to it) but it can be somewhat dressy when combined with a black leather strap (even if there's no bling), or a bit more 'casual chique' with a brown suede strap. Not seeing it with a textile nato, unless it's a leather one. White rubber, winner as well, I think. To be honest, I don't really see it as a pilot watch...
Also, I believe they have ironed out the kinks in the Calibre 400 with this watch (I believe this caliber in their Acquis or Big Crown models had some weird behaviour where the minute hand would 'jump' when you pushed back the crown).

    • @Mike.thiswatchthatwatch

The grey dial looks best to me. However, it is not available in my country.
Currently, there’s 20% discount, so I’ll have to decide whether to go for the blue one or try waiting for the grey one, and if I like it in person to go for it by paying the regular price.
    Thoughts?
Since I have a small wrist (not sure of its exact measurement), I’ve also been wondering can the bracelet be modified by removing a link or two if needed?
    Thank you in advance!

good breakdown. I always thought the case is shaped like a hypercar prototype. I feel they would have done better just adding some applied markers and maybe some traditionally colored sunburst dials and dropped the whole "pilot" angle.

It's a hammer, given to an expert carpenter.
It's a tool that smashes it on every level, with a quirk that says "I don't need to conform to prove that I know my s**t".

  • @yaakovhassoun8965
    @yaakovhassoun8965 Před 8 měsíci +1

I like this watch a lot, In house movement titanium, 5 day power reserve at a pretty reasonable price, it's a very different interpretation of a pilots watch, but it still has some features that make it pilot inspired. One of the negatives I heard about is that dirt seems to build up in the bezel quite easily, and I believe that. The grey is nice but I've never really been into gray dials, they just have a boring aesthetic. I look at a watch as a way to bring a little more color into your outfit. The salmon and the green are quite fun looking, the blue is more conservative but the majority of my watches are blue, so I'd probably go with a funky color. I disagree with the video's reason for using titanium that's polished, I think the point of grade 5 titanium is that it's much harder than steel and will barely show scratches, so your watch will look like new for a very long time, but it doesn't say on oris's website if it's grade 2 or grade 5... I'm assuming they would mention it if it were grade 5

Colors aside, the printed dials feel too flat and at odds with the case and bracelet, which play so much with sculptural forms. That’s what kept me away. Otherwise, I think these are fantastic and I like that Oris didn’t pander to the cosplay crowd by sticking to what a Pilot’s watch needed to look like 75 years ago.

Oris’ integrated bracelet sports watch design vibe is great: not too Genta-esque, providing a rather refreshing take on the theme. The clasp especially is a neat trick. But why oh why don’t they offer dial finishes that cater for a wider taste ?
The dial texture (before Kermit arrived) looks like thick matt emulsion paint applied with a cheap roller….and that’s before you get to the ‘pig-swill’ pink colour. By all means be ‘out there’ but providing a few more dials that appeal to a larger client base surely makes good business sense. Why ? Well, I looked, I liked but the colour-palette drove me away. I can’t be the only one confused by Oris’ perverse insistence on such a specific dial range for what is a very interesting watch in every other area. I guess this is the Swiss way of having fun…. Frankly, the Swiss should stick to what they’re renowned for: watches, chocolate and engineering…but not jokes.

I really like oris although I don’t own any of the watches, they are one of the few brands who are not tagged with “ that looks like a Rolex” interestingly, this watch probably makes the point about prices better than many Other watches, upon its release It was 4000 English pounds now you can pick it up for a much more realistic £2600 and a point that was made at the time was that the watch was overpriced. unless the watch you are selling really is luxury. You are going to see big discounts across the board in the mid tier section.

If you talk titanium, you can’t look away from Citizen. They harden and polish the lightweight metal like no-one else.
The original Tudor Pelagos in 42.4mm would be my preferred titanium watch. Only it is the lowest titanium grade (grade 2, and scratch magnet. grade 5 titanium is twice as hard as stainless steel. Hard to understand that Tudor uses an inferior material for their Pelagos.

    • @Mike.thiswatchthatwatch
      @Mike.thiswatchthatwatch  Před rokem +2

Very Good observation. Citizen have been leaders in Titanium finishing for ages. I also think they have a proprietary coating process similar to the diashield coating Seiko uses to further protect from scratching and oxidisation?
As to Tudor and grade 2. I’m personally ok with grade 2. It’s functionally more than sufficient for diving purposes based on the anti-corrosive properties and since they’ve gone for a very matte finish, G5 really isn’t strictly necessary (and I like the typically darker tone of G2). I curious to see the new yachtmaster i G5 ELI - my cousin is a surgeon and knows the material as they use it in bone replacements. He’s shown me some implants and it’s noticeably different from G5 in tone.

I don't really get it, why you're comparing this Oris Kermit (with an inhouse Cal 400) with Nomos Club? (While Nomos Cal Alpha is hand wound and Oris Cal 400 is automatic.) It doesn't make any sense what so ever! (Also regarding the price level that is higher in Switzerland - Oris - than in Germany - Nomos Glashütte! See the wage difference in Switzerland and Germany before rating the cost of a watch.) 🤔
Personally I'd rather buy an Oris than a Rolex (but that might be due to my taste). I simply don't like Rolex politics and the hype about the brand. (I think it's by no means justified. This said I'm an Omega fan!)

    • @Mike.thiswatchthatwatch
      @Mike.thiswatchthatwatch  Před rokem

I’m sorry you feel that way. I do my best to make my videos comprehensible.
I was certain that it was clear in the video that I was purely using Nomos as a point of reference for a watchmaker that actively uses vibrant colour dials to emphasize their youthfull- and playfulness. That - compared to Oris’ mix of tool aesthetic that stands in contrast to the playfulness of the dial.
Your comment indicates that this was not as clear to you, as I would have expected.
As to pricing. I am well aware of the wage and cost of living difference between germany and switzerland (which all things taken into account is a negligible share of the overall MSRP of a watch intended to be sold with global market pricing). Nevertheless - How wage costs has a bearing on a discussion on the use and impact of dial colours, though, is unclear to me.
I’m always trying to improve and thanks for your reflections. It’s appreciated.
