Olivia Thilsby and Karl Urban were literally the perfect casting choices. Their chemistry as actors and their portrayal of these judges is absolutely flawless.
Karl was great. He portrayed Dredd perfectly, but Olivia's portrayal of Anderson wasn't impressive. Though it's not entirely her fault as the writers got the character wrong by making her soft, scared, and humanizing.
So true i wanted this movie to get a sequel honestly it totally deserved one
@@mmabri this was her first job, it’s reasonable for her to be soft here, then tougher if there was a sequel.
@@mmabri Her portrayal was perfect considering who and what her character is supposed to be. Did you even watch the movie. Did you pay attention to the plot?
*Thirlby
One of the better comic book adaptations. Too bad it was set to fail by having zero marketing whatsoever when it came out.
Also cause it was going up against the raid, which was a big movie at the time.
I remember a 20 foot diorama in the Scotiabank theatre in Van. My only thought was that it was gonna be pretty good, but no one was gonna see it.
Yeah a big issue was Dredd itself is a bit of an obscure comic book. An issue with the movie was also lack of comedic relief. This movie was a good adaptation but not really a great movie.
Seemed like they weren't confident in it doing well because of how horrible the last one was.
@@thrash208 I was talking about it to some older people I know and they didn’t go because they thought it was a 3D remaster of the Stallone movie.
What I love is that by the end she realizes that while Judges are brutal what the Judges have to deal with is equally as brutal and makes peace with that.
I want more of KArl Urban's Judge Dredd. This movie made a small profit from its hefty budget even without marketing. Imagine if they treated it with the respect it deserves. Olivia Thirlby's Anderson would have been an interesting character to follow as she grows into the PSI Anderson we all know from the comics.
A trilogy ending with the Dark Judges called upone megacity one by Anderson herself.
I want more Karl Urban the man is brilliant even as Cupid.
This movie lost money. You can never just compare the production budget to the box office numbers, there are so many other costs that aren't taken into account. A good rule of thumb is to multiply the production budget by 1.5 (sometimes more for larger films). This movie needed 50-60 million to just break even, if not more.
More Karl Urban. Period.
Is still making a small but steady profit from cable and streaming I think, and I agree, seeing Urban and Olivia playing the roles again would be great.
He's thinking about grabbing your gun

He changed his mind

Pure gold.
I never went to see this movie at the theatre because of Stallone's Dredd. After seeing online years later, I think I've watched it 10 times. It is that good. Dredd never taking his helmet off was impressive. Also Dredd never breaking from trainer/evaluator no matter what was great writing. Such an underated movie. I want more of this but I doubt they could get the whole team again.
Olivia is in her early 30s and Karl turns 50 next month, on par with Stallone's Dredd, I think Stallone was late 40s. No reason they couldn't get the same two actors. Neither Olivia or Karl are as famous as they should be, I recon they would do it for the right price.
I've seen Dredd 10 + times were I watched it and probably 10 + times were I put in on in the background. Its a brilliant popcorn movie and hands down the the best version.
If you like Judge Dredd do a search for Judge Minty a fan made movie, its pretty good, terrible special effects but still good.
First comment I've seen that mentions that the stink of the first Dredd tainted the second. I wasnt interested in this one for that very reason, either. As other comments have said, they should have marketed it more, and some of that should have been focused on showing how it was nothing like the first.
My dad actually prefers the Stalone Dredd. I think it's probably because he's never read the comics. I never bought them but I remember someone lending me his collection of 2000AD back in the 80s. Surprised there's never been a Strontium Dog movie.
@@daviddavies3637In terms of a "normal" action movie, Stalone Dredd is pretty good. I watched it without reading the comics and it was on par with Total Recall and other 80s delights.
Heartless as that execution was, Anderson absolutely needed the ability to do that in the field. She wouldn't have lasted long otherwise.
She was gonna have to find out the hard way at one point or another that sympathy doesn't get you far in MegaCity 1.
Wasn't really heartless if you think about it. The guy reached for his gun again even after being shot. And 'was' trying to raise it towards her when she did shoot. Got shot multiple times and he 'still' was trying to kill her.
Plus that ass hole came out to murder, so it’s only fair he expect the same in return.
I doubt he would have lasted long anyway. multiple gunshot wounds blood in the airways... all she did was put him out of his misery

Criminally underrated and one of the better Judge Dredd/2000AD adaptations. The studios should have done a follow up. Urban and Thirlby were excellent in their roles.
yeah but finacially it was a failure. they didnt make back anywhere near half the money used to make it.
@@Gundam_JAY I think the lack of positive marketing had a big part to play in that though. Bear in mind that the script was written by Alex Garland, meaning it was tight and faithful to the comic, great acting talent and a genuine attempt to stay true to the gear and equipment that Dredd/Judges use. I believe had the studio used the budget that had been previously used in the Stallone debacle, this version would have faired significantly better.
I don´t think its underrated. It tanked due to horrible marketing, but it was well received among fans and critics.
@@SongJiangShiJin yeah but not really a lot of people know about it. And the peole who did know about when it first released thought it was just a copy cat of the movie "raid" ( which it isn't btw ) ...
But yeah for those points it's underated.
@@Gundam_JAY www.rottentomatoes.com/m/dredd
and for this simple reason its not underrated
Huh. Never noticed the whispered "yes, sir" before at 3:20. Definitely helps paint the picture that Anderson is processing what it actually means to be a judge.
It shows that, that action has changed her as a person.
Wow, watched the movie 2 or 3 times, I never noticed that either.
I really enjoy the way they handled Dredd. It's nice to see a character that shows zero mercy and carries out his duties without a second of hesitation.
He showed mercy when he gave them a chance to disperse. They were all criminals, and it'd have been well within his authority to just execute them with no warning. He also shows mercy later on when dealing with those two kids. He showed it earlier when giving that vagrant a chance to leave instead of being arrested. Hell, he arguably showed mercy when offering to spare that criminal's life in the beginning of the film, sentencing him to life imprisonment instead of death if he let the hostage go and surrendered. He's quite merciful. The thing is, he only extends that olive branch ONCE. If you're stupid enough to refuse it, what happens afterward is on you.
As to the second half of your statement, you are absolutely correct. Once he commits to a certain course of action, he follows through without hesitation and doesn't second-guess himself or his choices. He may ruminate on his actions after the fact, but only in a time and place where it's appropriate to do so, at least in the comics.
Ya'll REALLY gotta realize that Judge Dredd is a direct satire of an authoritarian fascist police-state, and his ridgid zealotry is supposed to be "cool", but abhorrent and terrible and inhuman. He's an evil dystopian fascist, using the logic and law of fascism to justify any and all abuses.
He's not to be looked up to or valorized. That's the entire point of him
@@solarprophet5439 He wasn't trying to disperse them.
He was trying to gather them in one place, right where the stun grenade was so he could get them all in one go
@@solarprophet5439 he also shows mercy to the rookie, when he doesn't fail her even when she lost her gun
@@fairystail1 Sort of. Dredd is "trying" to do multiple things at once. He's a professional who's been down this road many times before. He knows the score. Dredd gave them a legitimate chance to disperse. He would rather they comply. He also knows they're not going to, and so he has Plan B all lined up. This isn't even the first time that week that Dredd has busted the biggest criminal organization in MegaCity-1.
I liked the funny bits they did in the original comics. My favorite was Dredd arrested a guy for having 3 jobs. Two 8 hour jobs a day and 8 hours testing mattresses.
Dredd being such a bastard is what made his character fun. I remember one character that kept admitting to crimes he couldn’t possibly have committed, so Dredd sent him to the cubes for wasting police time.
@@nickmoore385 A 'spont', someone who spontaneously confesses to crimes they didn't commit or even crimes that didn't exist. Being a 'spont' is a criminal offence though...
Long time back I was an ordinary citizen in a Judge Dredd live role-playing game at a convention. I got interrogated by two Judges who were trying to solve a gang-related case. I confessed to everything and eventually they arrested me just to get me to shut up. Good times.
One of the times when it made me remember that 2000AD is a BRITISH comic, not an American one.

I've already said how much I love this movie many times. But I just truly watched when Anderson was at the point of pull the trigger or not. She did an amazing job at keeping her expressions under control during that scene, she didn't even blink when she pulled the trigger or flinch at all physically. And the way she held the stare off camera really brought that moment through.
The entire team that created this film needs to have a reunion and make part number two. (Except for the marketing and distribution team...they sucked.)
Dredd is so good, we need another one with Karl Urban and Olivia Thirlby returning. Centering the narrative around Anderson was a great call. It kept Dredd as an enigma, this purely Lawful Neutral force. The way the world is portrayed as well, there was so much "show don't tell" in the presentation.
What adds to the brutality is the judges only put 2 shots in each person, very cold, efficient, and Accurate Shooting. One of the better guns plays I have seen.
This was the best remake of any film I have EVER seen
Very hardcore, very gritty and surreal atmosphere
Well, it's not actually a remake. I love it too. Peace
Remake?
Hardly. Stallone's movie was a sad joke.
This is the only real movie about Dredd.
@@jatsi96 Agreed good point
Calling it a remake is an insult, just like Mad Max Fury Road, its an original story set* in a known universe with known characters.
What is called remakes now a day are cheap nostalgia cash grabs with unsolicited political statements.
@@jatsi96 Mean machine angel was perfect in the stallone movie. It's a shame that they wasted the material they hand and went with the story they did. Fucking awful movie that's best forgotten.
I just want to say thanks for showing the bottom and shaft of a real damn elevator. Comp chains, I can see main rails, counterweight rails, and the shitty helper installed duct run. Good job.
Olivia Thirlby does a really good job with using microexpressions and body language instead of unrealistically over-acting with her face like a lot of actors do, and like a lot of directors demand.
Kicked Stallone version out of the park
Nope I will take original over this redone scrap.
I think both movies were good in their own way. The Stallone version was just goofy sci-fi comedy fun, while the Urban version is a more serious and dramatic take.

@@spacedive7700 You miss Stallone in tight Spandex, don't you?
The Stallone Dredd was made in a different time when gritty movies weren't as popular. Look at the older Batman movies compared to the new ones. The 90s were a lot different from the 2010s.
Love this movie! needs a Netflix show. And i want Olivia Thilby back in!!!
They did have a sequel planned, but it didn't get greenlit due to disappointing box office on this film 🤬.
And they even had the plot chosen - Dredd *vs* democracy advocates…
[From a Dredd comic book series]
They planned a very morally ambiguous film that would divide audiences and make them question the "Make my Day" philosophy of Dredd.
Dredd would be against democracy because _"it just wouldn't work in the Megacities"_ with the citizens being like they are… needing to be controlled for the good of a society barely hanging on.
After all Dredd was originally conceived as a British satire on the American Dirty Harry viewpoint … not a glorification of it.
It's a bit like how the Punisher himself said that he himself is not a role model for police, he's a terrorist vigilante. And that if police wanted a role model they should look to Captian America… [the writers put that in because it turns out Punisher idolatry is rampant throughout Real US police forces].
So the audience would be presented with the moral implications of the fact that Dredd really is a fascist… just not a bigoted one.
It's a little bit like the Starship Troopers film.
And it would have been fascinating…
Especially the response.
This movie became a cult favorite way after the box office results. Urban might not be interested. But Thilby? Make here the main character and Urban can come in for surprise appearances if he feels like it. I'd watch the shit outta that
A Netflix show? No way.
I don't want a non-binary, black, transexual Dredd.
Dredd = They/Them
Anderson = She/Her
Are you serious??
@@casbot71We always like to question how others live and their response to their lives. It’s a good question, but ultimately a futile one. Just like the British satiring the Americans way of living, which is strange. Who are they to judge given their own history? Same with us watching how Dredd deals with the environment he lives in. Makes for good conversation and an excellent movie, but as I said ultimately futile as we cannot imagine or perceive living in said environment. Which is why I kind of hate those movies that make us want to question how people in an extreme violent environment try to function. We have a habit of comparing ours to theirs but in actuality it’s a child comparing their lives to an adults. I just want another damn good movie like this that shows Dredd working from day to day. That in itself is so interesting to me.
OH YEAH!!!😃😃😃
Anderson really understanding at the end that a Judge is also an executioner.
“You have ten seconds to comply”
“You got 5”
“Thanks for the heads up”
😂😂😂, I swear this movie had the best exchanges
It had an epic 1980s vibe for the one-liners. Very cool.
One of my favourite bits in this movie (and there area a lot of great, great parts of it) is that Dredd consistently announces what he's holding or using. "Stun grenade." "Respirators." "Basic field dressing." Just like the comics, where readers might not understand immediately what hi-tech gizmo Dredd's currently interacting with. I'm sure the Lawgiver's ammo selection being voice-activated grew from this necessity to communicate what Dredd was thinking about to the readers!
@3:30 That look on her face says it all. Her soul died that day, now she can become a judge.
Dredd will always be close to my heart, even closer than his bullets got to his targets' brains 🤣
Awesome movie. I don't get how it never got a sequel as Karl urban was the perfect choice. Bring him back.
Should be a TV series with Urban instead. And if made correctly, it will be a massive hit.
@@FabledGentleman that's a great idea. Love it. Won't happen but brilliant.
All masked superhero movies could take a lesson from this movie. Karl Urban wore the helmet the entire time, and still his acting presence on screen was on point. Imagine if we actually got a Batman movie where the actor portrayed Batman for 90% of the movie instead of Bruce Wayne like what we have been getting.
When your comment ages well
...or a Mandalorian...
it would be boring...? well depending on your definition of batman. For Dredd that kind of thing works. Because there is no duality. There is no downtime Joseph with his own commitments. He is just Judge Dredd. Whoever is under that helmet is only known to shadows and dustmites wherever he goes when he needs to clean, heal, and rest. I don't think you can tell a compelling live action Batman film without balancing in Bruce.
@@davidlewis5312 True. The writers behind Marvel's Spider-Man said the best Spider-Man story is also a Peter Parker story. I think the same applies to Batman. There is a reason so many people love the Court of Owls storyline at the beginning of the New 52.
@@teamvlcn6820 ultimately in both Parker and Wayne's case the reason for that is the motivation of the masked character. That motivation comes from the lives and tragedies and mistakes of Bruce Wayne and Peter Parker. From what i understand of Dredd. His motivation comes from his belief in Order itself, in his conceptualization of Justice in the form of the Judges, thus he is Judge Dredd because he is Judge Dredd. More accurately, the motivation comes from not something personal but something indoctrinated. So you could see more in the concept of a Knight, who is bestowed the title. A created title of distinction that comes with certain social baggage.
2:30 I love the robocop reference
All Hollywood ever makes nowadays is sequels, except for this! Great movie.
I love how in this scene they’re kinda fucked, they’re super outnumbered and getting slowly surrounded, and Dredd just doesn’t care lol. He’s still treating this whole situation like a training sim for Anderson lol.
The entire movie, he kept that same energy. No matter how nuts it got, he kept up the evaluation. To her credit she tried to do the same.

Ever see Band of Brothers? Lieutenant(later Captain) Spiers develops quite the reputation of being a badass. Going into any situation with no fear whatsoever. Also has tales of him just gunning down a group of prisoners after offering them a smoke. He never denies it nor confirms it. Only lets how he is perceived stand.
But a little secret he tells later on is that he just accepts that he is already dead. If he doesn't worry about that, then he has nothing left to fear going into any battle.
I think Dredd has much the same attitude, but also like Spiers, he still cares for those under his command. He might be reckless for himself but not those under him. Both Dredd and Spiers respect that each Judge has their way of doing their job. They don't expect others to behave the same way, but won't discourage it either. What is important is getting the mission accomplished and making sure the other side does all the dying or surrendering.

Such a underrated movie. Always thought this version would translate really well into an open world action RPG.
One of the many movies that deserved a sequel
Great movie. I just wish people would pay more attention to the delicious details, like how all the technology is quasi-1990's - note the monochrome LCD screen on Dredd's gun. Also - and nobody ever seems to get this - the moral of the story is that in the end, it's questionable whether anything that Dredd did in the whole movie mattered or made a difference; from the first chase scene where Dredd's actions cause the death of a civilian, to the end of the movie where Peach Trees is free from one gang, but another may move in next week.
In 1980 the technology presented here seemed futuristic. Despite being set over 100 years in the future, the technology advancements were always fairly basic, including robots that were very primitive looking. Dredd often remarks how there's no end to his work.
