I converted my old 1993 Thermos two burner gas grill from lava rocks to ceramic briquettes a couple of years ago and it works great! It has always been stored indoors and looks brand new after 30 years of use.
Those briquettes are pretty amazing and I love that you've kept your vintage grill so nice!
I did this with ceramic tiles instead of the briquettes on a tiny charbroil grill2go and omg dude the thing now cooks like a 1k$ infrared grill.
That's awesome! Great idea!
really? what kind of ceramic tiles? that sounds like an inexpensive upgrade!
This is the best video I have found. PERFECT!!!!
Thank you, kelly girl! Glad you liked it!
How have I not seen your channel?! This is fabulous!!!!!
I don't know, but I'm glad you found it!
I have a Charbroil gas grill that needs the burner tube replaced. The tubes are covered by heat shields not tents. Also has "Infrared cooking grates system ", not a fan. I can replace the igniter tubes and heat shields, you think the rock grate will sit o top of the heat shields? As for the cooking grates grates
Fantastic as always!
Thanks!
Excellent thank you!
Thanks! Hope it helped you!
Charbroil would like you to believe that you can only use I framed style grates on this grill. I know I can replace with stainless steel grates, but the well that the grate sits in is not quite standard. Any recommendations on this and the heat shield issue? Love your video!
Thank you, jonboyee! I don't know how the Charbroil is laid out, but I wonder if you could drill into the body and insert self-tapping screws like I did in the video? Mine was non-standard too and the screws gave me a place to add the grates.
Why they've ever gone away from briquettes i have no idea
I totally agree!
@@UnchartedDIY I converted my two cheap broil King's. Watched this to see how to replace the heat displacer. I should have switched it when I added the rocks I just put them on the original tin
If you happy with how they are cooking, you should be fine! @@666dynomax
@@UnchartedDIY Yes one has rotted through, rather than the $52.99 to replace the factory shield which i dont use, I'm going to use your method. Where do you get your lava? Hard to find here locally, looks like Amazon is my best choice at $22-27/10lb bag (canadian)
I couldn't find them locally either, so I used Amazon. I have a link to the briquettes and the grills I used in the description. They made a big difference and now my grill cooks better than when I bought it new!
Does it have to be a rock grate or can any grate work?
That's a great question, Augustus. As long as the rows are close enough together, any type of grill or grate that can withstand contact with fire and be food safe should work. You can see the specific ones I used in the video description. They could also be made of expanded steel or a mesh, but definitely don't use anything that is galvanized, as that gives off seriously toxic fumes.
What happens with the point of the screws going through the body of the grill?
The screws cut their own threads into the aluminum body as they go into the pilot holes. Do to the space constraints inside the grill, pilot holes are needed since there isn't enough room to get enough leverage to screw them in without pre-drilling. The tips will come out looking exactly like they went in, leaving clean threaded holes.
@@UnchartedDIY are there sharp points sticking out on the exterior of the grill?
@@reneeharlow1983 They do protrude about a quarter inch, but they aren't sharp like a normal screw. The tips are pretty blunt because of the self drilling feature. It would be easy to cut them flush using a rotary tool (Dremel), but with the way the lower body tapers inward on mine, it would be quite difficult to touch them by accident.
@@UnchartedDIY thanks
what temps can you get up to?
Interesting question 🤔 I don't measure the heat inside the grill, instead I look at the super-vague gauge that's built in to the lid. When it's in the center between low and high, it's pretty close to 350. It's been all the way to high and was really hot, but I've never measured it when it's high. Maybe I should!
