  • NZ Free Speech Union Chief Executive Jonathan Ayling says the introduction of language compliance officers through the newly passed ‘plain language legislation’ by the New Zealand government is “quite Orwellian”.
“I do have to wonder at the self-awareness of the people that draft this legislation,” Mr Ayling told Sky News host Rowan Dean.

Obviously these two things have nothing in common except for that it involves speech control.
Speech is a crime when sensitive information is divulged for a criminal interest (espionage being another example). It is not a crime when it involves a personality, outlook, or opinion.

It sits so oddly in such a sweet and scenic country, but then these social engineers are used to clamping down on thought with a caring smile.

The law is designed to reduce the use of technical terms in laws that make it hard to understand or comprehend what they are actually trying to say. The practices they are trying to reduce confusion through words or something otherwise known as DOUBLESPEAK. I don't understand how reducing the use of these practices are considered Orwellian when the practices this bill is preventing are government tactics designed to limit individual participation and understanding of government. These are the same laws done in Australia through sectors such as the public service under the liberal government. Not only that but the bill actually says nothing about enforcing Maori language and in New Zealand this argument has nothing to do with enforcing Maori language and I have no idea why they are talking about this. It's just another example of Sky News completely misrepresenting an argument and backing it up with arguments like "this will lead to 1984".

Once you cross that line, where does it stop? Free speech is either entirely free or none at all. This is clearly not meant to avoid misunderstandings or misinterpretations. I personally don't think it's within the governments purview to force people to be 'nice' to each other by limiting free speech. What are they thinking? I've noticed politicians have really lost touch with what their job actually is. It is NOT to shape society and force people to act a certain way. It's to keep people safe and keep the economy running. Thats it. All this social engineering is NOT what we have government for.

This bill highlights a huge problem in New Zealand culture, which is that it's a culture that actively discourages loquaciousness or the use of polysyllabic words in the face of simple reticence.
This is dangerous because when you take words out of circulation, you take ideas out with them and people lose the ability to mount sophisticated arguments against nefarious actors in power.
This is literally how Ingsoc maintain power in George Orwell's 1984 - by restricting the use of language.
This bill really just codifies something that has always been a problem with New Zealand.

I think alot of it stems from the breakdown of a family and people becoming less self sufficient. We don't teach kids anything at home and expect them to learn how to survive in the real world after being brainwashed at school and people don't seem to understand the importance of doing something as simple as catching butterflies or growing carrots at a young age when our brain makes connections and is at it's most prosperous

As someone who was born and raised in NZ, I have to say that the 'acceptance' movement has been very prevalent from the beginning. I've spent a lot of time overseas and can definitely vouch for the fact that NZ is very 'progressive' in its thinking, especially since Labour has become the majority government as of the last election. The problem with a pro-progessive outlook is that it boxes people into a certain way of thinking, i.e we must except everyone for who they are, no matter the circumstances. It's such a conflicting idea, that we somehow must agree with and accept someone else's views, but only if they lie within the progressive ideal. As an extreme example, the recent surge of MAP acceptance is fucking disgusting, and is morally and naturally wrong, but we must except it because it may hurt someones feelings to say that being attracted to children is wrong? But you must 'stand up against' and shun the racists and misogynists because their thinking is wrong. The idea doesn't work, and while some ideas may be right or wrong, the way that someone thinks or speaks shouldn't be determined by the government or population minority that is driving the movement. Progressive thinking drives for us to accept everyone that looks different, but forces you to think the same. It closes off the option for differing opinions and shuts down any option for an open dialogue in any context, because if you think different, you are wrong. I'm not saying that we shouldn't be accepting of other peoples ideas and characteristics, I am just stating that some things should be left to the individual to determine for themselves, and shouldn't be something that is enforced by other people.
P.S - Yes I do realise that this conflicts the action of the CJS, but the purpose of my comment isn't to say that everyone should be able to act any way they want without consequence. The purpose is to state that the level of control over someone's actions should be limited, but I think that the degree of control that is being pushed for is a little too much.

In the 70s and 80s Trudope senior spent billions trying to make the federal public service bilingual (code for speaking French first). Thousands of old, tired civil servants were pushed into government run French language schools and threatened that if they didn't reach a certain proficiency level they'd be fired or transfered. I think you can figure out what happened. Those that didn't make the grade were replaced with native French speakers whose sole qualification for the job was speaking French without an accent. What's even funnier is that the language schools taught French French not Canadian French , as it was deemed to be too hillbilly. I could go on but its triggering my PTSD lol.

Māori is 1 of the 3 national languages along with sign and English here in nz. Should we force people to speak Māori? No. Should we force people to sign? No. Should we force people to speak English? No.
However, the fact remains English is internationally recognised as the most common language and unfortunately the other 2 languages application is limited. That’s just the way the cookie crumbles
