That brown obsidian is called mahogany. The black obsidian is called black Sheen. The two best and beautiful types of obsidian is called peacock obsidian. Because in the sunlight it looks like peacock feathers. We also have a blue sheen and a green Sheen that comes out of Mexico. But it's all volcanic glass just depends on how it was cooled with the minerals around it. I've been a flintknapper, and teacher of flint-knapping for 32 years. I live in Central Indiana I don't like to nap obsidian. Because the indigenous cultures around here didn't nap that material. It's a good cheap material for beginners. Get away from it as fast as you can. Spend your time with Flint,Chert, and agates. One good thing about obsidian is you don't have to heat treat it. Some of it is very beautiful though. If you are going to nap obsidian, make sure you bring along a lot of Band-Aids. I have friends who go out west and gather obsidian. I've seen pictures of obsidian Boulders as big as cars. Nice video though. Hope you have a nice day

Nice. Note that there also several active mine claims around the area, for some of the specific colors that are most desired. Check with the ‘local’ rock shops in Bend for a map, or Google for ‘Glass Buttes map’.

Oh my! I was there two time and look for that colors but they are nowhere. We went home with several nugget around 2- 4 inches and very thin. We would love to have some of those size. If you would share the direction how to get to that area, may I ask. Beautiful rocks and video. Thank you for sharing ( is the map in the end included the red color or just brown and black?)

Glad you have visited the area. At the end of the video is a Google earth image of the area with Lat/Long coordinates listed for both black and brown obsidian areas (just type the coordinates as listed into a google map). The black area is most easily assessable from the Highway by a fairly typical dirt road, however, the brown obsidian area is further back in and will take some more serious 4x4 driving to reach. Good luck

be careful not to claim jump if you're going to knapper camp. All of the "no project access" signs mean that theres a claim. If you want big hunks then you'd better bring a pick and a shovel. Also, water. It's dry as fuck. Also, if you google glass butte obsidian there's a link to a good map with pins of different obsidian types.

It's 250 pounds per year for personal use only. Many of us have staked claims and it's the rockhound's responsibility to know where these claims are to avoid conflict with claim holders.
