Seems as if this game has been panned everywhere else due to it having micro transactions. They are a ridiculous practice and their inclusion has been factored into the score due to them artificially slowing down game progress. But we look at ALL aspects of the game not just one area and, on the whole, this is still a decent game. If a game is bad, we'll be the first to tell you but based on the whole game, not just one aspect.

I dont get the problem with it. Played less then 15 hours, unlocked my two favorite wrestlers, plus got an 85 overall custom superstar... It would be disappointing If i would have more in this time.

@@KirbySevenEleven exactly this, psychologically accepting mtx as normal .. regardless of whether you purchase them or not, the game has already been changed to accommodate mtx. The game is modelled around a business practice rather than being modelled around being great game. Glad your enjoying it, you paid for it, but once upon a time, you would get everything in game, now you have to grind unnecessarily. Yes you unlocked 2 characters, wait til you have to grind for the desirable ones. Its all done to make you want to spend more cash, and thats the issue. But like i say, younger generations accept this practice as they see it as normal.

I've actually unlocked every Superstar i want and wait for the Update. Its absolutely mit necessary to spend money for anything. Play it. Than judge. At least in those games you could pit male Superstars against female Divas and vice versa. You can’t even do that here for some dumb reason.😒

Just got it blind for $7 on sale, ive wanted it for a long time and cant wait to play. Seems like a perfect chill little game for the switch lite.

@@melissad4056 so that you can pay microtransaction, so although your happy with the grind, the devs and pubs are not happy your grinding. They put the grind in...to make you just skip that and pay. If this title does not earn enough greed, the next wrestling title has even more grind. So .. thats the whole evil cancerous nature of the business model. Its all linked, and that is why mtx is not ok in any game, becuase they are basing the game around money, rather than making the game balanced and as good as it can be. But, i truly hope you like the game as you have purchased it and not spending out on the greed. From the review the game looks fun.

Yeah it was the same issue I had with Mortal Kombat 11. It pretty much destroys the point of having it on the Switch when you can’t earn any rewards from playing the game wherever you are without having to it connected online.
Just connect to your hotspot .. do you not carry your mobile every where ?

Looks like one of those fun little games i would have played back in the day on my original Xbox, GameCube or PS2. Looks fun, pick up when it's on some sale.
Was hoping this would fill the void left by WWE All Stars, which I really enjoyed. But no offline progression is a deal breaker for me on any platform, and especially the Switch which is only online when I'm at home with it, which is rare. The way this game is designed is at odds with what I use my Switch for. Not for me.
All Stars was a fun time. A game like this has a lot of potential but it was a shame it turned out how it did. Needing online for progression on a portable console isn't a great thing
Love these over the top sports games but micro transaction is a no for me, really grinds my gears! Great reviews always, defo the best channel in CZcams 👍

I enjoy the older wrestling games , way back on during PS1 era. This looks like it might be fun , has an arcade feel . Might pick it up if it ever goes on sale.

Thank you Dave! Great review! I SUPER appreciate your best attempt at an honest review of a relatively controversial total (CZcams world, not real world.) I loved the first NBA Playgrounds (nearly %100 it on Switch, and I rarely get anywhere near that completion rate; took about 60 hours). Many people hated on the sequel, which carried the new 2K branding, but it was better in every way... except progression. I feel like most reviewers on this title have decided to trash this game because of micro transactions or the state of wrestling games overall.

Same with battlegrounds and playgrounds... Played about 75 hours of playgrounds 2 and got ca 20 Hall of famers maxed, as well as some more epic's. Plus all of the Other Players unlocked. How fast so people want to unlock everything in such a card-based game? Dont like microtransactions, but senseless hate either...
I picked it up for 20$ from 50 canadian, so I feel my value score would be higher then what you gave it :) happy to see this

A friend of mine from work who's a wwe fan but not really a gamer (and old enough that he has a granddaughter) was excited for this.
I was considering getting it since I loved WWE 2007 on my Wii but the microtransactions are a deal breaker for me.
The Deluxe version of WWE Battlegrounds is on sale on the Nintendo eShop for 9.99, and the base game is 7.99. Sales last for 4 days.
Was debating getting this need something over the top like this, but I'll wait for a price drop
I love and support the channel, and the review system is honest and fair. My comments below are my own and not a reflection of switchup. I am anti MTX and have carried the fight a long time so i must comment.
If everyone that purchases the game doesnt pay for a single microtransaction ever..they would stop putting them in, but considering that microtransactions is a multi billion dollar industry... means many gamers are purchasing them. So like covid 19, because many people just dont care, they are here forever to stay.
Just like covid, this practice is killing the industry, so its a no purchase for me. Im a gamer, i been gaming for 40 years. I can't purchase games that have this element. I can't be a part of the problem, i need to be a part of the solution. Its just pure greed. The gameplay changes to accommodate this, so it affects gameplay and changes the fundemental aspect of a game.
This practice also feeds it to kids like adverts on a kids channel aimed at them so kids put pressure on adults to pay up. This practice is predatory, kids (just like virus) become the vessel for those companies (asymptomatic). MTX is same predatory system. Herd immunity makes MTX the new normal (gamers have accepted it as normal). Whats worse is this is a paid for game. Businesses will laugh all the way to the bank if gamers accept this in full priced games.
My views are my own , but also part of a wider group of older gamers trying desperately to stop this becoming the psychological 'normal' for the youngest new generation of gamers who will purchase based on the fact its the accepted normal. If that happens, that cancer will have killed gaming dead, yes its that serious. The game itself might be fun. But its cancer, or covid virus baked deep inside the coding is sinister, therefore the title must burn and die.
Cheers mate. It's always difficult reviewing a game that includes micro transactions as it's a scummy practice but in a review, we need to be fair and deduct points for when they directly affect gameplay or if they affect the value (which, invariably, they always do). We hate them as much as everyone else. I was a big FIFA Ultimate Team player a few years ago but gave up bothering because the grind to get top players was stupid and they weren't having any more of my money!

This was an extremely.... generous review. Something that I feel wasn't properly emphasized, it wants you to grind like hell or spend a ton of money on skins since they all are of those same 5 classes.
With respect, I don't think it was overly generous at all. In fact, I think it's far more balanced than a lot of other reviews of this game that latched onto the micro transaction part and just went to town on it.
The two points you mention were emphasised - they are literally the two negatives stated at the end of the review. Micro transactions are crap - I hate them but they aren't the whole game and we need to be balanced. I respect your opinion though, I understand it's a shady part of the industry these days.

The microtransactions are a big part of people's criticism, yes, but that isn't the only reason that it has been panned. But I'm not going to argue. Been a big fan for a very long time, but I guess I can go elsewhere.

If you cannot have a debate with us the first time we disagree then that's unfortunate. Read my comment again, I'm pretty sure you'll see there isn't a defensive point in it, I just clarified a few things. I know what you mean. Having friends over playing that wcw v nwo was some of the best nights as a kid. We were so stoked when revenge came out. I remember picking that up at toys-r-us and having some buds over for an all nighter.
Makes me think back to buy it maybe it's better to wait for the discount moment. Now just wait for the roller coaster tycoon, and jurassic world I think..
It’s a pretty good game so far except in campaign mode when you get to wrestlemania every move you do will be blocked or reversed and makes the game more of a pain in the ass than fun.
Well for me it's playing for leisure...will pick it for the 18 EUR now at Amazon. Don't really care for micro transaction. Just want a bit of arcade fun. For that it is a good game at a fair price.

I feel like wrestling fans deserve All Stars 2, but to be fair, Battlegrounds is the closest we've gotten in awhile. If it had the move diversity and dynamic striking of All Stars, it would've been one of the funnest WWE games in years.
with a casual interest in wrestling, I was interested right along until we got to value - such a grind heavy game imho should have got a value below 10 - but either way it's now a no buy from me.

Jim Sterling hated this one... like, dearly hated it. It wasn't just the DLC- he always hammers on the predatory practices of the industry- but he also complained that it was mindlessly repetitive, starting the review with the "kick punch" song from Parappa the Rapper. I don't think it's quite as lousy as he made it seem in his review, but I feel like it's still not quite good enough to be worth the bother. I'm eagerly awaiting the AEW game, but honestly, I'd be even happier with a port of Fire Pro Wrestling World.
Love jim and support his stance on mtx in gaming. Any business that wants to silence the little people, clearly want to gag the the voice so its not heard...for a reason. They dont want the cash flow being stopped. Im a huge anti mtx campaigner and jim is a talisman man in gaming. He loves gaming like we do, and is a voice that carries weight and can change naughty predatory business practice. (At least shape it a little bit, be a thorn in the publishers behind)

Also, why should we be required to be always online for a PORTABLE game ?

I just picked this game up from gamestop for $17. I only played one match. I needed a wresting title for my new switch lite, so I grabbed it being that 2k18 is broken

Sadly we now living in a world where even the AAA Developers "promise" there will be no microtransaction, there will be in it within a couple weeks after it get good reviews by metacritics and fans like Activision did with Crash Team Racing Nitro Fuel.

As a follow up, i got asked to do a survey on this game by Nintendo, i have suggested that each wrestler could do with having a more unique move set, or even have sub category's for the 5 different wrestler types, ie Lightweight brawler, Heavyweight brawler etc you could double or triple the variations without having to make each wrestler completely different.

Big problem is wrestlers of the same class feel exactly the same. Once you have tried one technical wrestler for example you have tried them all. Even as an arcade wrestling game its average at best. All Japan Pro-Wrestling Giant Gram on the Dreamcast still holds the crown as the greatest arcade Pro-Wrestling game of all time!
Spike Chunsoft just needs to port Fire Pro Wrestling World for the Nintendo Switch, that way we'll get our Switch wrestling need fulfilled. Instead we get three bad wrestling games (2K18, that one Boxy online wrestling game and now 2K Battlegrounds).
Microtransactions don't really get me since hey, MK11 has it, and its a full 60$ game.
I prefer the grind honestly.
That aside, I really like the game's feel and look. I would get it if I could but poverty is a mistress of pain right now lmao

I don't think anyone but classic THQ knows how to make wrestling games. For me, wrestling games are all about the wrestler creation modes. When those modes are too limited, or you're forced to connect to the internet, it's a no-buy for me. On the PS3, I got spoiled to having custom soundtracks for my created wrestlers. I haven't cared about wrestling games since the newer consoles stopped having custom soundtrack support. In the famous words of the Angry Video Game Nerd, "WHAT WERE THEY THINKING" when they removed CD rippers from consoles? There's no excuse. Besides, game companies could still make custom soundtracks possible through a flash drive. So why don't they do that? I'll never understand it.

I mean a 7 would be too high for this kind of game. Considering there's a gold edition. I think it's more a 5 or 6 because even the online because there's no mix of wrestlers so if you pick a woman you have to pray others have unlocked women so you can play
In this Type of cartoony game i would have prefered If they would have simply mixed the roster of men and women
It looks like it could be been a winner but micro transactions will put many off, having only five classes of wrestler is a shame too but does each wrestler at least have their own signature and finishing moves which makes them unique to the others?

Of course, yes. Plus they got different size and stats. 5 classes are not much, but its fully ok. Its Highflyer, Tech, brawler, big men (i guess) and Allrounder... I dont miss anthing (but an Superstar, its a shame there is no MVP, SHAME on you 2k!!!)

@@NowUndefined besides all the flaws that this game has like cartoony character models, lack of online match variety and weak custom creation suite it's a decent wrestling game to add to you're switch library, because by the time wwe 2k22 comes out you're going to want that on youre playstation 5 or xbox series x

So turned up to see how bad this reviewed after seeing Jim Sterling taking it to town. I fully agree with what Jim had to say, he has plenty of WWE baggage and he most certainly doesn't let sleeping dogs lie.
However I watched this review with no chance in ever going to buy the game. What I personally feel I got was a balanced review of someone who enjoyed the game but who was waving the "jolly rodger" that is the micro transaction flag high and wide. The fact they are repeatedly mentioned is more than main stream media do, who often hide behind the "its not a feature we used" as a reason for blanking the inclusion of them in their review.
I enjoyed the review and as a resolute anti- microtransaction gamer feel Dave did a thorough job in bringing them to everybodies attention.

I mean you literally had to try to fuck this game up, it's all there, fun graphics, fun character, fun micro transactions, I mean fun surprise game Mechanics. This game. Disappointing game for me. If you really want an amazing wrestling game with true creator functionality and community, just play wwe 2k22 on your mobile. That’s what I do. Costs more but so much better

For those of you out there, you DON'T NEED to buy anything, thats up to you if you choose to not play the game the way it was intended to unlock thimgs. For others some may need to spend extra money because they don't have time to grind, kinda like how mortal kombat 11 got blasted when it first dropped.
