  • Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his party suffered their biggest upset in more than two decades on Sunday as the opposition swept municipal elections in Istanbul and other major cities.
    The Republican People’s Party (CHP) retained mayoral seats in two key cities - Istanbul and the capital, Ankara.
    The CHP also gained 15 new mayoral seats in cities across the country, advancing in locales that were previously strongholds of the Turkish president and his AK Party (AKP), marking the worst defeat since the latter came to power 21 years ago.

      countries with very different history and dynamics. turkey probably has a longer secular history than your country (I'm assuming Ireland). So the possbility of Turkey turning into Iran is absurd no matter who the government is.

      Not that he would ever have the power (literal sharia wanting population of Turkey is roughly 12%) but one of the reasons was for sure people’s resentment towards violations of the secular principles of the country.

There’s also the fact they’re a minority outside Turkey so they stick together as one, and their identity becomes very important.

    As the founding father Atatürk said in his book Nutuk ("Oration"), only the young Turks could save the future of Turkey and they just did that with this election despite the vote stealing and thievery Erdogan has been doing since the last 20 years. So, the percentage difference between the opposition and the ruling party is actually much bigger in reality.

    Just ling as this embeds Turkey more and more solidly in the modern era is I believe an improvement. Now if then can become more secular I think we will really have something positive there.
