  • It was the deadly duo of Robbie Fowler and Stan Collymore that scored 30 between them in the 1996/97 season, and in which a young Michael Owen made his Premier League debut for the Reds.

    This was our best 90's team ...
    Fowler and Collymore were in their prime, Barnes and Thomas re-emerged to make big contributions, Berger was a great signing, Owen made his debut ...
    United won the league with a pathetic 75 points ... and we quite often looked like the best team in the league. But as always, we just couldn't remain consistent ... every great performance was soon followed by stupid dropped points.

      And James calamity followed . These players were excellent in their hey day but too unfocused and inconsistent to win the league . A shame that such a excellent team didn't win anything .

    11:18 The first Liverpool goal I ever saw. In the U.S., ESPN had started showing Premier League matches and I had heard of LFC, so I watched. What a match! 4-3 Liverpool, with Fowler winning it right at the death. I was hooked, and have been a Liverpool fan ever since. Now, if I could only watch 1 team out of all sports, it'd be Liverpool.

    Lost 2-1 at home to Coventry after being 1-0 up, two errors by David James, would've went top of the league with 5 games to go. Ultimately not good enough in key areas.

    Can still remember the afternoon Robbie got his 100th vs Middlesbrough. Was 12 at the time and was with school friends watching our local team Wisbech Town at their then home ground Fenland Park.
    I was a Year 7 and one of my Year 7 friend's Year 10 brother was there with his mates and one of them had a radio that he usually brought to games to keep up with the Premiership.
    I can remember him calling out those 4 Fowler goals and being dead excited for Match of the Day that night.
    Football seemed even more exciting at that age somehow. Those were really great days.

    Main problem was defence. Wrighty was good but Kvarme, Babb, Ruddock, Matteo and Scales weren’t exactly champions material CBs. Just another case of “missing one signing”.

    • @1980extremeG
      @1980extremeG Před 2 lety +2

      Yeah exactly. Those players were mostly average at best (Scales wasn't too bad though). Best attacking team in the league at the time but conceded too many goals, goalkeeper too unreliable and the midfield lacked guile. United had better players in those key areas (Keane, Schmeichel) sadly, which helped them big time. I don't think their defence was that great either but they had more grit than us, could grind out ugly results, whereas we would falter and drop points against lesser teams. It's a scandal that this side only won one league cup, should have won more.

    The real mystery of England's 98 world cup story was not Beckham's red card but Le Saux or perhaps Darren Anderton was in selection priority at the expense of Mc Manaman.why??!

    • @GREGGFOWL
      @GREGGFOWL Před 4 lety

      Because england switched their formation from the usual 4-4-2 (which would accomodate macca on the left wing) into 3-5-2 so the midfield were 2 fullbacks as wingers. If you asked why the change of formation? because gazza (who's the 1st choice cm in 4-4-2) were a mess before the world cup with his alchohol abuse so ommited from the squad.

    • @samroberts3741
      @samroberts3741 Před rokem

      @@GREGGFOWL but macca was a fb with anderton at euro 96. These must have been defensive fbs.

    • @hiraldo_
      @hiraldo_ Před 6 měsíci

      Hoddle stuck to 3-4-1-2, and unlike when Venables played with wingbacks (using McManaman as one), had pigeonholed McManaman as an attacking midfielder, with Gascoigne and then Scholes instead taking up the spot behind the strikers.
      But he should have been one of the first few names on the teamsheet at that time, with the formation possibly being adjusted to fit him in. Only receiving about 15 minutes in France at the end of the Colombia game was a massive waste of McManaman at his peak.

    This was an excellent Liverpool team that should have won the Premier League. Instead Man Utd won it with the lowest ever points total. Very edgy in defense and lacked the consistency, losing to Coventry City at home was so costly. Dropped too many points at Anfield this season and had they accumulated the same number of points at Anfield as they had the season before, they would have won the league.

Sometimes he would strike a ball real sweet but I can remember many a time when he would get a horrible connection that would sometimes still go in but more often than not, wouldn't. Baros was the same. So was Cisse really. They did well to earn the money they did.
