- Man Utd lift the Premier League trophy for the fourth time in five seasons
After the euphoria of England's run to the UEFA Euro 1996 semi-finals on home soil and a gripping title race between Manchester United and Newcastle United the previous Premier League campaign, the two sides were the main protagonists again in 1996/97, with Sir Alex Ferguson's side winning their fourth PL crown in just five seasons.
Newcastle, who had let a 12-point lead slip to Man Utd in 1995/96, made a statement of their intent clear with the world record signing of England striker Alan Shearer, who arrived at his hometown club from Blackburn Rovers for £15m in July.
But it was another English star, who had not featured in Euro 1996, that made his mark on the opening day of the season. Manchester United academy starlet David Beckham scored from inside his own half as the Red Devils beat Wimbledon 3-0 at Selhurst Park.
Fabrizio Ravanelli, who joined Middlesbrough after scoring in Juventus' UEFA Champions League final victory over Ajax the previous season, scored a hat-trick in Boro's 3-3 draw with Liverpool on his debut in August. Other notable recruits included his former Juve team-mate Gianluca Vialli at Chelsea, for whom Ruud Gullit was made player-manager after an impressive debut season, while Patrick Vieira arrived at Arsenal and Patrik Berger joined Liverpool, who saw legendary striker Ian Rush depart for Leeds United.
After two defeats from their opening three matches Newcastle won six on the bounce before they welcomed Man Utd to St James' Park in October. The Premier League leaders thrashed the defending champions 5-0, with Philippe Albert's sublime chip rounding off a memorable victory. A shock 6-3 loss to Southampton and a 2-1 home defeat to Chelsea followed for Man Utd.
But United soon embarked on a 16-match unbeaten run, starting with a 1-0 win against Arsenal, who had appointed Arsene Wenger as manager from Japanese side Nagoya Grampus Eight the previous month. It was the first defeat of Wenger's long and successful reign at the north London club, and it allowed Man Utd to wrestle the momentum back in the 1996/97 title race.
United's form was inspired by Eric Cantona, who scored a sublime chip in a 5-0 win against Sunderland. That was one of 11 strikes in 1996/97 for the Frenchman, who netted over 10 goals for the fourth successive Premier League campaign before announcing his shock retirement in May at the age of 30. - Sport
My first season supporting Manchester United as a kid and what a season from start to finish
Same here. Were you born in 83? If so you're like 4 years older than me. You started a little late. I was 9 and it was Euro96 that had got me properly into football and my neighbours were already ManUtd fans for years before then so I was already saying I was ManUtd fan before actually being interested in their games from 1996 charity shield vs Newcastle onwards.
@@FootkerSnookball it was Cantona’s goal against Liverpool in the FA Cup that got me into United

Editing could've been better..many crucial goals are missed so is the sound in the Beckham piece....otherwise a good season review
Ravenelli opening day hattrick. Amazing.
Well he had just won the ChampionsLeague....then joined a mid-table PL team...🤔
What a contrast, won ChampionsLeague then a year later loses in the cup final after getting relegated (but only got relegated because of the 3pts deduction Middlesbrough got, otherwise they would've finished 14th).
when everything is good in the world
Shearer was the worlds most expensive player in 1996! It is absolutely ridiculous and disgusting how money has destroyed the sport! It started when the FA Premier League tv rights were sold to bSKYb. The beautiful game in this country has become a foreign league with players, managers, owners all coming from abroad.
This editing is ruining everything
Tbf it's only on for (just over) 3 quarters of an hour! Can't get it all in let alone 'Copyright' reasons!
You do it then 🤡
Good start feature with the Lion better than the modern ones. As for the season really felt for Sunderland they didnt deserve to go down.
Sunderland always deserve to go doon.
I went to 16 home games and 11 away that season including selhurst park to see becks score THAT goal
Oh how times have changed
Not been to OT since 2017
It’s just too much
I can't imagine how expensive it is now.
Despite the thrashings they received from Newcastle & Southampton, Utd still won the title on a canter. Ferguson had no equal this season.
ManUtd did deserve the title but finishing 7 points clear of the 3 challengers was only because they won all 4 games vs Arsenal & Liverpool and they were all hard fought.
ManUtd 1-0 Liverpool (Important win Utd were still just about in some form before hitting a terrible patch)
ManUtd 1-0 Arsenal (Important win & clean sheet for Schmeichel to end the bad patch of losses and loads of goals conceded, Arsenal were ahead of ManUtd before the game and ManUtd closed the gap, ManUtd weren't 1st that season until the end of Jan)
Another big win in Feb Arsenal 1-2 ManUtd
Then April Liverpool (Calamity James) 1-3 ManUtd.
If Utd had drawn a couple of those it would've been extremely tight looking on the final standings and a loss in any of the 4 even if ManUtd won the other 3, could've lost ManUtd the title but they did deserve to win them but other seasons they've deserved to win big head-to-heads and lost them and it's cost ManUtd the title. Obviously mathematically Utd still finish 1 point ahead if you give say Arsenal a win vs ManUtd but mentalities change depending on the position you're in and what you need from the remaining games etc...
Newcastle had good record against ManUtd (apart from C.Shield of course) which gave them the 2nd & final CL place ahead of Arsenal & Liverpool but people consider this a season that Liverpool had the best chance to win out of the 4 teams despite them finishing the lowest of the 4 in the end albeit only GD separating 3 teams.
If anything the losses against Newcastle Southampton and Chelsea where a blessing in disguise
David James cost Liverpool the League Title.
Up all night playing play station
Funny how they had a similar colour away kit in 1996/97 to the suits they wore before the 1995/96 FAcup final they lost 😆
hey where is 04/05?? only one missing
This was the first season of Arsene Wenger
Any for 1992-93 1993-94 and 1995-96
Dirty stuff there by Ian Wright..
Do you have season review full 2010-2011 !! ?
Football was better then
only if you were a man utd fan
More attacking, it was better, regardless if you was Man U or not
used to always play USM2 for this season. Great game.
Why edit it so terribly?

Didn't know David Cameron was a Newcastle fan @33:41

What ever happened to that rising star David Beckham?
"What ever happened?!" He already became one of the stars of the world bro

What were the chances of back-to-back 4-3 wins for Liverpool vs Newcastle 95/96 & 96/97.
Only other oscure back-to-back scoreline in the PL I can think of off the top of my head is Arsenal 5-2 Spurs 2011/12 & 2012/13.

Lowest amount of points to win the premier league trophy
How many was it
75 points
2010/11 was comparable in that teams from 2nd to 4th finished very close with similar region of pts (high 60's-low70's).
Both 1996/97 & 2010/11 the champions ManUtd could've finished with 72pts and won either title (and there were other seasons that also applies to).
Even the team who finished bottom in 96/97 Nottingham Forest were unbeaten in 22 of their 38 games. No team was really bad in the PL that season.
Geordies.
Unwatchable
Alan shearer made the wrong choice.
Should have gone to manchester united.
Blackburn owner Jack Walker wouldn’t allow it. He hated Utd.
