    3/4 ton tow stability with 1/2 ton power. I think the XD is an amazing option for guys who just tow Travel Trailers 5-10 times a year and don’t want to pay $20K more for a 3/4 or 1 ton.

      It's literally the comeback of the heavy half. Which I something this market sorely needs. We need like a 2000 truck class to slot between the 1500 and 2500. Like an f200 or a ram 2000. Oooh imagine a ram 2500 with lighter suspension and a 4 cylinder version of the current 6.7, like a modernized 4BT. And maybe a ford f150 with literally a 6.7 powerstroke with 2 cylinders cut off. They would sell. And they'd share so many parts, only unique parts that should be necessary should be crank, cams, block, heads, and intake/exhaust manifolds. Use the same pistons/rods, same pushrods/rockers, all the same bearings, same gear drives and pump systems, etc. etc.

      @@Prestiged_peck I completely agree. Modern 3/4 or 1 ton diesels are way overkill for most people but 1/2 tons don’t get it done. I do love the XD for that reason, just wish the Cummins was continued and mated to the new 8 speed (I think it’s an 8 now). It desperately needs another gear to grab.

    From Cummins:
    Engine Design/Configuration 90-Degree V-8 Turbodiesel
    Horsepower 310 Horsepower @ 3,200 rpm
    Torque 555 lb-ft of Torque @ 1,600 rpm
    Wringing it's neck to 4k rpm puts it way outside the efficient window where it produces TQ and hp. TQ is what you need to pull. I have a 2017 and I've pulled 14k lbs on a trailer before and had no issues getting to highway speeds. 80mph pulling even 9k is not really smart with those tires on the trailer. They're not rated for that speed to begin with. We have to remember this is not a 3/4 ton truck, it was not designed for that. But I've pulled some super heavy stuff, I pull my racecar, extra race fuel and all my gear in a 26' enclosed and have never had an issue. Going through TN and all it pulls fine. It's also lifted 6" on 35's and still no issues. The fuel mileage sucks but other than that it's a good truck! Remember folks diesels don't like to be revved high, they make their TQ at low revs.

    Hey JB, I know that people that own a Titan XD diesel will review this so this is for them, I have a 2016 Titan XD Cummins with 62,000 miles and it runs fantastic, and like you said very stable. I bought it used with 23,000 miles and it had AFE performance products on it. When I did research on this company, these are modest modifications, Momentum HD Cold Air Intake System and scorcher power module as well as the 5" exhaust. I think this really had a major effect the performance of my truck without going overboard without deleting it. I also got a letter yesterday from Nissan, they are giving extended warranties on the Turbo Actuator and the Turbocharger for 10 years or 150,000 miles from the manufactured build date. Plus if you had them replace you might be eligible for full reimbursement, if you own a Titan you should have the letter or get it soon. I love the truck and love the way it tows, I never had one white knuckle experience with this truck, great video!!

The boat is 6,500 and it accelerates better than many cars do. You almost can’t tell it’s back there. I’d go get the 2021 XD with the 5.6 and do this exact test and I’m sure the new 5.6 would clobber this 5.0 Cummins up that grade! The cool thing about the Armada is it self levels. Pulling our fifth wheel camper I got 8 with the 5.6 and 10 with the 5.0. It's not a perfect truck but for the money it's a great value. @Jackmerius_Tacktheretrix Před 2 lety

      Difference is you really have to rev that 5.6 to get the torque that the 5.0 delivers at less than 2000rpm. If youre okay with keeping the roms up the gas engine works, but works alot harder than the diesel. Ive towed with both my xd, a tundra 5.7 abd an f150 5.0 and at low rpms there is no comparison. You have to keep the gas engines roms up to maintain speed on evem the smaller hills, the 5.0 in my xd seldon downshifts unless im pulling some steeper hills, and keep in mind my platinum reserve weighs north of 7400lbs, 1500lbs more than most half tons. And the stability cant be touched by any half ton period.

    • @fewworddotrick
      @fewworddotrick Před 2 lety +1

      @@Jackmerius_Tacktheretrix yep the gasser has all the power in the world but it has to scream to get it out. Having owned both of them I can confirm that the diesel generally stays around 2000 rpms on the highway and pulls hills really well at about 2700. 2700 was almost the cruising rpm with the gasser while towing. Now at high elevations with a big load it's going to work harder. The big advantage to me is the mileage. It's almost a wash if you're paying retail for diesel, but I have a discount card to use at truck stops which gets me diesel for about the same price as 87 octane and sometimes cheaper. No one discounts gasoline at least not that much because semis don't run on gas.

    @Billysbreakdowns Před 2 lety +3

    The fact he was just below the red line while holding steady up hill should've indicated either turn OFF tow haul mode or go into manual shift mode to be in 6th gear overdrive. Since any diesel truck's peek power and torque range is never below 1500 or above 3500 RPM, his cruising RPM of nearly 4000 is in more ways than one restricting this truck!
    Operating outside of that range (mostly the transmission's fault) will not only feel sluggish, but will lower overall efficiency, putting stress on the truck, and potentially cause it to overheat.
    So it seems this truck's biggest shortcomings are due to the transmission and like many say is more comparable to the trucks of the mid 2000's at best MAINLY because of that damn transmission.

  • @Jackmerius_Tacktheretrix
    @Jackmerius_Tacktheretrix Před 2 lety +4

And even if a half ton can tow what my XD does, its been shown time and time again that they have nowhere near the stability of my XD. My XD tows with the same stability as a 3/4 ton with a better ride. If towed my big box trailer with an F150 5.0, a Tundra 5.7 and neither held a candle to my XD when it came to stability. My Titan XD tows my 32 RLS Gateway regularly 5th wheel regularly. Truck and trailer on scales is 21K, have towed a big Horn gateway 367 and the truck and trailer on scales was 25k. My truck is fully deleted but I don't run anything other than a 30HP tune. Biggest issue I have is it's very very loud especially at the RPM you were at 3-4K is obnoxious. Used it for roofing towing 10-14k trips all summer with dump trailers. Your about the only person that said it feels very stable and planted towing. Feels like that for every trailer I've towed. Biggest thing no one mentions is the turning radius is unreal on these trucks. Coming from a 06 dmax, and a 11 dmax they felt like driving a river barge.

If this truck had revised throttle pedal tuning and an additional 100 lb ft of torque I think they would've sold way more. It feels like a turd empty which doesn't give anyone any confidence that it would be different with a trailer. With a bit of foresight at the time mixed with some hindsight 5-6 years later, Nissan did not go far enough with this truck when it came to the ambitions that birthed it. They tried to play the domestic truck fight game but played it too conservatively and did so at a pivotal moment in the competition between the Big 3. The Titan XD needed to follow the more established naming convention (1/2, 3/4, 1-ton *and* have specs to match those), needed to be able to tow much more than ~13k, and the diesel needed more power...not a lot more, but closer to 700 probably.
    When this truck debuted Ford was about to unleash the current Super Duty with the now-over 900 Power Stroke, GM was seconds away from doing the same, and Ram was right behind them. To make things harder, the much more powerful diesels the XD Cummins was going to quasi-compete with were rated to tow over 15k and payload more than 2600. The Titan XD would have been a great 5/8s-ton truck back in the 00-05 model years; too little capability now though, when it will get smoked by an EcoBoost Ford up a hill pulling the same weight.
    And that dash screen was much too small even when new. Again, would have been a real contender had it come out in 2011, but 2017 and after have seen the absolute head-bashingest fight between the Big 3 trucks in any market segment for which Nissan simply does not have the production capacity, or it appears, the willingness to market.

    • @jjsemperfi
      @jjsemperfi Před 2 lety

      I agree. If they gave the Cummins a 2500 lb payload, 100 more ft lbs of torque and hp then it would have been a real contender. It’s perfect for someone like me who isn’t restricted by it’s low payload and just wants an HD 1/2 ton for a fraction of the price of the big 3. It is very outdated. We traded a ‘17 F-150 Lariat for it and the Nissan feels like it was made in the early 2000’s compared to the Ford.

    Yeah I remember they were pushing the XD as a middle ground between a 1/2 ton and a 3/4 ton. Did it achieve that? Yeah but not in a good way, it was overshadowed by the more powerful purpose built HD trucks, and wasn’t fuel efficient enough to keep up with the other half tons. I would however love to know how it would have gone if ram had used this motor “as originally planned” in the 1500 instead of the eco diesel. What do you think JB? Should they have kept the 5.0 Cummins, or was the 3.0 eco diesel the right call?

    • @JB_WhoWork
      @JB_WhoWork  Před 2 lety

      The Ecodiesel had its challenges but it is primarily a fuel efficient alternative to the HEMI. The 5.0 Cummins wasn’t exactly a great platform due to it being new but it had great potential if they kept building them. @@noosh8316 I've towed with my brothers 5.6 half ton pro4x and my xd cummins and that 5.6 cant touch the cummins unless you like reving the hell out of that gasser. That cummins just cruises up the hills without even having to downshift. Towing the same trailer I pulled the hills on I-10 west of San Antonio without ever downshifting, while his lighter half ton would drop 1-2 gears everytime we hit the hills, even the small ones. Below 3800 rpm the 5.6 doesnt have much torque, the cummins makes more torque at 1800rpm than the 5.6 makes at any rpm. Despite my diesel weighing 2,000lbs more than my brothers half ton 5.6 it still pulled way better. Way less downshifting when I wanted to pick up speed. And that keeps your transmission cooler. Drag racing with the same load sure he'd probably accelerate faster but you have to work that gas engine harder just to maintain speed up the smallest inclines. That diesel will pull at low rpms (under 30000) with no issues. The torque does the work.

      Very true but if you want a 1/2 ton (or 5/8 ton) that can tow a true 10k with great stability, this is it!

    I’ve never lost speed on step hills. Even with a 3 car trailer with 6 side by sides in it.(17k lbs) Love my Titan. Towed my toy hauler to sturgis 12k 4000 mile round trip and the Titan had no problem handling the weight.

    Problem with this truck is that it’s weight classifications are in the 3/4 ton, but it was designed to be a beefy 1/2 ton that can’t match the capabilities of other 3/4 ton trucks

    It's hard to find because they're no parts for it when it breaks. Not a very good engine despite the Cummins name.

    I had a 2017 single cab xd cummins, overall great truck. Never towed 9k on it, but did you try manually shifting gears? I've towed lighter loads on my xd and had weird shifting issue. Manually shifted and it worked great, also nissan has transmission updates out that dealer don't do unless you complain. My xd trans sounded like a dump truck through the gears which was resolved in a update. Traded that truck in for 2018 xd 5.6 with 7 speed, not as good as the 9 speed they came out with. That 9 speed is butter on the new XD

    Full throttle up 6% grade, going for a speed run and holding it at redline and your not even sure what your looking at the guages. Call me from a Titan diesel owner you should look through the manual before you test that truck. It doesn't have a DPF so level that's exhaust temp and the stock gauge is horrible. Truck never really made good boost either I'm going to say there may have been an issue with that particular truck to begin with
