  • Welcome to our second session here on Cherry's ESL. If you have not yet watched our introductory and first session, I recommend that you watch them first.
I noticed that here in the Philippines, we are fond of using the term dialect to the point of saying dialect instead of language. Through this video I hope you will know at least the basic difference of language from dialect. You will also get to differentiate Tagalog from Filipino.
We will be having a short fun quiz as well.
Sit back. Relax. Watch. Listen. Take notes. 😺
Thank you so much guys. Do not forget to subscribe or like or click on the notification bell to be notified once a new session is up. But why not just do all three? 😉🤗🥰
Please just bear with the video quality and my voice.

And also, why you included the british english in the list of English dialects? I thought UK English is the standard English language where all the variants are came from? Same thing with the Manila tagalog, Manila tagalog are the Standard Tagalog language right? Medyo na confuse lang po ako.

I like your questions. Thank you very much for that.
A dialect is a form of the language that is spoken in a particular part of the country or by a particular group of people. There are many different dialects of English and they have different words and grammar. Most learners of English learn the standard dialects of the language.
There are many different forms of standard English: for example, standard British English, standard American English, standard New Zealand English, standard Indian English. The standard dialects of the language are used by governments, in the media, in schools and for international communication.
A dialect is not the same as an accent. An accent refers to the way we pronounce words and the standard dialect of a language can be spoken with different accents.
Examples of dialect forms in British English are:
I ain’t going to school today. (standard form: I’m not going to school today.)
She don’t understand. (standard form: She doesn’t understand.)
Would you like a cheese cob? (cob is a dialect word in parts of the north of England and means ‘bread roll’.)
Standard dialects are not better than other dialects, but we don’t use dialect words or grammar in an essay, during an interview or in other formal contexts.

Filipino Language as being the standardised variety of Tagalog language, is this means that Filipino language is a *dialect* of Tagalog language??

Great question. Yes you are partially right and accordingly Standard languages arise when a certain dialect begins to be used in written form, normally throughout a broader area than that of the dialect itself. So for example you have the word hamburger in Filipino but not in Tagalog.

@@CherrysESL I've always been curious about this topic po kasi since 'Filipino vs. Tagalog' is really a very long and unending debate sa mga CZcams comment. Marami na pong nag-away dahil sa topic po na yan. Hehe. Thank you po for the response. 😊
