5:05 Well said. Very safe answer, Prof. 🙌
- There are 100 languages.
- Languages are broader, and dialect are smaller and more specific, and often regional.
- Dialect is a variation of language as long as the two people understand each other.
Can we have more videos like this! This is amazing!
Dialect is a variation of language...
Very well said. We should consider a language is a language if the two persons talking cannot understand each other though they have the same accent, and intonation. Bikol have the same accent and grammar construction with Cebuano, but they cannot understand in other words used therefore they are different languages. Bol-anon and Siquijodnon have different accent and intonation compared to Sugbuhanon or Central Cebuano but similar words and sentence construction in used, likewise can understand each other, therefore it's dialect a variation of Cebuano. Waray is different because they have similar words used but different in meaning, though they have the same accent and intonation. Same with Hiligaynons, there are words that similar to Cebuano in used but different in meaning. Therefore they cannot understand each other or else war exists if you insist that they are both the same because I myself can speak these languages and sometimes I think first before I speak due to some reasons that I used words that both cannot understand but they are using on it.
The prof's answer to the origin of language maybe true ONLY for spoken languages. Languages can be purely (1) oral/verbal, (2) visual or (3) written ..or a combination of any of the 3. Early humans/humanoids may have used a language even before, or way after, they had the ability to "speak" or make sounds with their voice. Where or how did language start? It started with the need for beings (humans/animasl) to communicate (to express and to be understood). Language is cultural.... so the origin of language cannot, or can never really be established (unless you can definitively establish the start of culture), because sounds/gestures/signs/writings do not have meaning unless these matching of signs/words+meaning is mutually agreed upon/shared/used by a group or community.
-Languages are broader, and dialects are smaller and more specific
Language allows us to share our ideas, thoughts, and feelings with others.
Dialects Retain Identity
Many cultures use different words or pronunciations for the same thing. Unique pronunciations help give a culture its identity.
Such a good explanation 💓💓💓
Very informative ..👍
Salamat sa pagupload.
My three takeaways
*Language involves both the ability to comprehend spoken and written words and to speak and write.
* Dialect is a viration of language
*Dialect is a important specially when you are talking with someone
Jennifer V Flores
- We should learn about the differences between language and dialect
-Dialect is important specially when you are talking with someone
-until now the origin of language is still cannot trace.
Armila C. Cantuba
-Dialect is a variation of language as long as two people understand each other.
-If a two people speak in different variation and cannot understand each other it means language.
-The origin of the Language is still not unknown.
Three things:
1) dialect is variation of a language. Ex. Iba tagalog sa quezon province kumpara valenzuela, or bisaya sa bohol kumpara surigao. Same language pero may variation (dialect)
2) bisaya, binisaya and cebuano are one and the same. Parang tagalog/'filipino' language. Waray-waray (eastern visayas) and hilagaynon/ilonggo (western) are separate LANGUAGES. Di sila 'dialect' ng cebuano/bisaya
3) colloquially, bisaya is a language (cebuano/binisaya), while visayan refers to lugar/geography
Kaya an ilonggo is visayan (lugar) but not bisaya (language), while a dabawenyo is mindanaoan (lugar) but also bisaya (language)
I am VISAYAN but I speak Chabacano fluently, also spelled CHAVACANO. These languages such as VISAYAN (Bisaya) HILIGAYNON (Illongo) FILIPINO (Tagalog) are mostly infiltrate this foreign language so-called CHABACANO (Creole Spanish).
Filipino ≠ Tagalog
My 3 takeaways:
*Dialect is a variation of language.
*Hyoid bone enable us to say, speak and do things.
*until now the origin of language is untraceable.
Good
My native tongue is Bikol Legazpi -Tabaco-Sorsogon and it is a dialect of Bikol Central language.
Still useful til now
I can speak Javanese, Indonesian, Tagalog and a little bit of English.
Bakit wala man lang nag bigay ng tubig????
Water. Tubig. Where's the intern?
Kawawa ang mga Pilipino tagal na nilito ng DepEd. Delikado ang maling pagtuturo naipapasa ang pagiging ignorante.
Manlilinlang ang DepED, kung alin ang mali yon ang tinuturo ng DepEd nililinlang nila mga walang muwang na Pilipino
Oo nga especially the Tagalogs no hate. Ung school ko mismo nagsabi sa amin that Bisaya, Ilokano, and the rest are dialects and Tagalog is THE LANGUAGE. It hurts deep inside kasi pagnaririnig nila ung Bisaya, parang nadidiri sila or they classify it as "native" while taking pride that Taglog is a high class Filipino language. This doesn't apply to all Tagalogs but to those ignorant Tagalogs I know. It really hurts char
@@thereseclaire9806 Yeah it's terrible to realise this as a language enthusiast. We should embrace diversity.
@@thereseclaire9806 sa totoo lang po Mas nagandahan Ako sa bisaya Kasi matapang Sila mag salita kisa sa tagalog
@@eljsusvillatv7438 thank so much po!❤️ all languages are beautiful ❤️
Si prof felipe jocano to eh
Maraming mga tao lalo na karamihan sa mga Taga LUZON na alam nila ang LAHAT sa bu-ong pilipinas Ngunit binabasa Lamang ang mga libro sa pagkat Hindi naka punta sa lahat ng mga Lugar sa bu-ong Visayas at sa bu-ong Mindanao dahil ang nangungunang ginagamit na salita sa bu-ong Visayas at Mindanao ay Cebuano or benisaya language.
Nainis ako sa interviewer
Marunong ako mag Chavacano at Bisaya.
My three takeaways in this video;
* that we have 100 laguages.
* learned about the difference between laguage and dialect.
* that chavacano is a combination of Spanish and a little bit of Cebuano.
well on my own opinion. language is national speakers on one country. dialect form of many city, province, dialect speakers..
un/fortunately, opinions doesn't count. The differences of a language vs dialect have already been established by Linguistics experts, not by opinion, but by objective facts.
While majority of the Canadian provinces speak English, a substantial population/provinces speak French. So what then is Canada's language? Is French then, only a dialect?
Language for daily conversation needs 5k words
Language for communication /education/trade/technology needs 15k words
Language must have 15k vocabulary /words
Otherwise its call dialect.
Filipino / tagalog have 25k words
Illocano visaya and others didnt have 25k words
@@jasonquinones4901 oo nga mali , ang pakahulugan niya
Sa science tayo magbatay hindi sa opinion
According to stupid and idiot(Sariling opinion, imahinasyon)
Dialect means regional,local,indigenous language
According to dictionary(Katotohanan)
Dialect means distinct and regional variety of a language
Kaya ang dialect ay variation ng wika.
English dialects is the variation of distinct version of English language.
Spanish dialects is the variation of distinct version of Spanisn language.
Language: Aramaic
Dialects: Palestinian Aramaic, Assyrian Neo Aramaic
Language: Japanese
Dialects: Kansai dialect, Ibaraki dialect, Mikawa dialect, Tokyo dialect
Language: Tagalog
Dialects: Manila dialect, Tanay Paete, Morong dialect, Tayabasin, Batanghenyo ,Bataan, Bulakenyong Tagalog, Caviteñong Tagalog.

Cebuano is Language! Pero dialect nila mga waray, ilonggo at iba pa, kasi magkakaperaha naman pero naiba lang sa intonation o accent sa pagbigkas, may napalitan lang ng konti.
Yes and no, cebuano is a language and bisaya is a dialect because may mutual intelligibility. Which means nag kaka intindihan kahit may pinagkaiba sa tone or accent. Waray and ilocano are both distinct language kasi walang mutual intelligibility. Meaning wala kang maiintindihan. Ibang iba language nila
@@JVPCHANnel, Bisaya refers to the whole language of VISAYA speakers. Cebuano is their main language, most of them can spoke Cebuano(Waray, Boholano, ilonggo, karay-a etc)..
@@dailyviewstv5323 i know meron din bisaya/Binisaya na dialect its like cebuano but different accent.
Cebuano is language, their dialects are: Bol-anon, Siquijodnon, Dumagueteño, Davaweño, Bukidnon, Misamis, Pagadianon. Kidapaweño, etc.
Bisaya is people living in Visayas.
Binisaya is another term for Cebuano because other Cebuano-speaking decline to accept the Cebuano as their tribe because they're living outside Cebu. They consider Cebuano as the people living in Cebu as Davaweño living in Davao.
@@MillenialsCotabato, Bisaya is at from Visayas?... Huh!.. The visayan speaker in Mindanao!?.. Most of them migrated hundred of years from visayas! What do you call them?.. Visaya is a tribes spread through out Philippines, they speak only in their own intonations and accent, but if listen properly, it is the same words but have a little changes of intonations and words.. But you can tell them, they are one.. That the reason Luzonian call them BISAYA...
Think this! The British migrated in America(USA), because mixed in other languages, created a new accent but still English.. The Latin, they evolved in different language but still called them LATIN.. the Spaniards, french, italian, Portuguese etc..
Thank you for the clarifications. Now I'm finally enlightened. 🤍
