The C6 Corvette NEVER Had A Backup Camera *FIXING GMs Huge Mistake*

  • Naveed Jamali was a double agent for the FBI, and this is his car. The car is a 2006 Chevy Corvette Z06, tastefully modded and totally black, this is a car that's nearly impossible to hide in. He wanted a few mods done while the car was here and one of them was adding a backup camera to the Kenwood double din headunit that was installed. Today we're doing just that the way I like to install them without cutting the bumper or making any permanent changes.

    For us geezers who with each new technology say "I don't need that!" Like they said when heating and cooling, automatic transmissions, delayed wipers, radios, disc brakes. With new cars with backup cameras, traction control, anti-lock brakes, and lane departure warnings, sure is nice to have.

      So true! 60 years old when I got my first active steering with lane departure, I thought I’ll never use that stuff but within months of owning it I never drive the highway without it.

      Certain features are nice but backup camera shouldn't be a thing. People should always know where their wheels and bumpers are at and actually turn their head. I have a backup camera on my car and never use it. I asked the dealership to code it out but they refused to do so.

    • @BrewProof
      @BrewProof Před rokem +1

      @@IKhanNot good luck seeing the kid that chased a ball into your blindspot that the camera was watching by 'turning your head'... by that same logic ABS brakes is also nice to have but we should all just modulate brake pressure on our own instead cause who needs safety technology?

    • @IKhanNot
      @IKhanNot Před rokem +3

      @@BrewProof Well first off ABS doesn't modulate brake pressure, the master cylinder along with the help of the fluid does that plus your input on the pedal so moot point. I've been driving longer without a backup camera than I have with one and honestly it's useless to me. All I care for in a car is for it to have AC for the summer time heat. The rest of the gimmicks can be done away with.

    JR's concept of "easy" is literally intimidating sometimes. This ain't "easy like Sunday morning"; that kind of "easy" I can handle.
    No, this kind of "easy" might as well be "easy like particle physics".
    Fun to watch, though. I learn a lot about the things I will never understand and will never ever try to actually do to my cars. The result would be - chaos (in theory).

    Nice install, I like the camera on center.
    There are worse Bose systems and worse factory systems out there but that system still has issues. The door has 10" subs with their own amps, what Bose calls bass modules, 3.5" mids above that Bose calls twiddlers, a 3.5" mid in the middle of the dash, and 5.25" mids in the rear sail panels. The amp for the speakers is in the passenger side footwell next to the fuse panel, it's a 4 channel amp, so the door mids are each on a channel as front left and right, the center is summed mono, and then the rears are summed mono on the rear channel. I don't understand why the rear speakers are mono, and the only thing I can surmise was they had to use a 4 channel amp, so ran the left and right door speakers on their own channels, then summed the center to mono, and summed the rear to mono. As far as I can tell there's no fancy processing for the center speaker to act as a fill, it's just mono and it messes up the stereo image. The rear speakers also mess up the stereo image, plus they are quite a bit muddier than the front speakers so they reduce the clarity significantly, and while they add some mid bass missing from the front speakers, they add low mid clutter. Disconnecting the center speaker improves the stereo image significantly and fading the front speakers forward further improves clarity and stereo image. Insulating under the carpet of the rear hatch and under the carpet of the rear seats reduces some of that low mid mess and then you can partially fade in the rears to add back some of the missing low mids but not overly distort the stereo image or reduce clarity. The sound deadening he added would definitely help.

    I got a $12 factory replacement cam for my 370 and it looks great. These are all cmos cams and since the head units sold in cars are not fhd (usually less than 720 even) the added cam resolution doesn't really matter. Looks great day or night and makes backing up in parking lots less of a chore. Cheap doesn't mean bad when you're dealing with 20 years old tech.

      40+ years here, but it sure is nice when backing into a parking space. I like to back in as far as I can, and knowing exactly where that parking garage wall or vehicle parked behind me is located is great. Plus when backing out of a spot it helps you see "around the corner" and avoid backing into traffic when you get boxed in by a couple of big SUVs.

    For this build, should have done a cheap front camera. Pulling the head unit is the most time consuming part of that job. They make ones (I have one) that push perfectly into the front grill so no drilling or any weirdness.

The maps on the phone in your pocket are more accurate, easier to use and have much faster traffic reporting due to the massive amounts of data that all other drivers around you are sharing. Also, why would you want a box stuck to your windshield vs a factory replacement look that requires no additional wires to be strewn across your dash. If it's just ease of use, I guess that works, but I'd venture to guess most enthusiast wouldn't want a Garmin stuck to their dash/windshield.

You don't have to be law enforcement to do it and it's completely illegal no matter who does it. What you discussed in your first comment were things that while they should be illegal in my opinion they are on the books as options from which a law enforcement officer can choose. Personally I have never lived in a place where the local law enforcement were out of control in this way. I hear horror stories about the deep south (USA) and other very rural areas. I have never been there. I'm not saying it doesn't happen. There is a channel named "Letto's Law and he has a video that deals with civil forfeiture. It's a tough place to be.

      @@InsideOfMyOwnMind Yes it is out right theft BUT if they call it civil asset forfeiture you have to prove that you property wasn't intended for criminal use even if no charges are brought against you.
      I watch Letto's Law too and he regularly does stories on this but only the particularly note worthy ones not all of them or that would be all he does.

      Never had a cop take my stuff (white privilege) but have been pulled over for bs like this. Got pulled once for 'tag light not working' and walked to the back of the car after the officer left (he wouldn't let me inspect while he was there) and the tag light was fine but was a bit dirty and dim. They'll find any reason to harass down here.

  • @jrmason

    So what John shows is just another way to do it. As a professional installer I typically choose to use cameras like the blind spot cameras from Rostra. Very very small, factory looking, excellent resolution, 3 year warranty and no exposed wiring! Sure, you have to drill a hole in the plastic above the license plate for the wire to pass though (you'll never see it). No wires to see or get snagged in when washing your car. Secondly what is with all the ground loop isolation behind the radio? I mean maybe there is noise since the car is plastic or fiberglass but the PAC interface kits usually combat this in design. Corvettes have had audio ground issues for years. I would have removed that mess behind the radio and neatened that up. I also wouldn't have run the camera cable under the center of the rug like that run it along the side where there is little chance of somebody dropping something heavy on it and breaking it (hey it happens). Also hooking the camera up with "T" taps is a problem waiting to happen. Lastly running the power supply right up to the radio might have solved the video noise you were seeing. Plus it makes it easier to troubleshoot issues when you try to consolidate your connections in as few places as possible. You might have to put in a video ground loop isolator. Hey, if the radio already has ground loop isolators are there maybe this radio suffers from multiple ground loops and you just added another one. Yes, it's nice to see how others to the job I do.
    Here is a tip for those interested in putting cameras on Chrysler, Jeeps and RAMs. Don't just hook up to the rear back up lights for camera operation. Your camera will flicker on and off. (Chrysler's taillight monitor system) Really it's PCM.
    Have a good one!

    • @marcusdamberger
      @marcusdamberger Před 2 lety +1

      Yeah, I was wondering that too. The tag is the sticker that goes onto the license plate to show when the registration expires, odd way to refer to it. This is sort of like those people who use text shorthand in You Tube/Facebook comments or emails to the office.. I cringe when I see that, makes me think they didn't pay attention to English class in school. Put only slightly more effort into their writing is all I ask.
