This is one of the best sci-fi films I’ve seen. It’s a rare example of a found footage film that works. The story is intelligent and thought provoking, the visual effects are fantastic, the acting is great, and the script is very well written. It really is a masterpiece.
I was going to comment until I read yours.
Agree 💯
Totally agree. This movie sucks you in from start to finish
It's weird how underrated it is
And a stark social commentary on the human condition… segregation, oppression and discrimination.
Saw this in theaters during its run, came out extremely impressed beyond words. Absolutely incredible how this was the debut of a brand new director, who also got an Oscar nomination for writing the screenplay.
Yeah I watched it at home one night just tried it out and I was so pleasantly surprised with how good it was!
Yeah this is one where every time I see a reaction to it, or hear about it in passing, I'm always *extremely* glad I saw it in theaters! I've never been one to go to the movies a lot. Literally once every 3-4 years, if that. So it has to be something special for me and even then, a lot of the time I just don't end up going even if I really want to. I don't even remember why I went to see this one at all, but I'm so glad I did.
Funny thing about the writing is much on the dialogue is improvised the director wanted it to feel as real as possible and allowed the actors freedom to try things.
A friend of mine is from South Africa. He loved it because it portrayed a part of his history in a way that others could easily understand.
That when the space commies took over your society became the rape and murder capital of developed society?
I was gonna say something similar :-) great history lesson that all can get
Forgive my stupidity, what history lesson?
@@Aeroldoth3 the film is an analogue to the treatment the black South Africans recieved during apartheid in South Africa that was ended in the 90s
@@lukedudley5030 THanks.
This is about apartheid, when South Africa was run by whites and treated blacks like crap. I'm very impressed with Sharlto Coply's performance. He had never done any acting before, he was just a friend of the director. Now he's been in a ton of movies and always gives a perfect performance every time, he's a natural.
Wow, I didn't know it was Sharlto's first!!
It is about aliens. It is inspired by apartheid.
When this movie came out, people were amazed at how good the FXs were, because they made this movie for only 30million dollars. Around this time big movie studios were making action movies with a +200million dollar budgets, the FXs sucked and so did the stories. Then this little movie came out and showed people that with a good story and great know how, 30mil can make you a great film.
The guy who made this movie had plans to do an "Aliens" sequel, which would retcon the other Alien movies as a dream for Ripley. The concept art with older Ripley, Hicks, and Newt got me very excited. Then Ridley Scott quashed it and made more crap movies on the Prometheus branch.
Oh wow I didn't know that I would have been so excited for that
Dang. : (
And don't forget Halo. He was rumored to do a Halo TV series after people saw his promising Halo: Landfall concept video. But the TV series idea fell apart...and years later we got the abomination that aired last year on Paramount.
So, Scott has Alan Dean Foster do the heavy lifting so he could make an Alien movie on the tails of the Star Wars phenomenon. James Cameron makes it a franchise. Following movies can't capture the magic. The 'Prometheus' movies feel like someone is trying to channel Nolan and failing. Scott sure didn't stop any crappy AVP movies from being made......
A dream? The whole story is fake like the Usual Suspects?
It's amazing the parallels the writer and filmmakers drew between the treatment of the aliens and what was happening in District 6 in real life during apartheid. This film is straight up commentary on how effed up the human species can be.
Exactly this.
Now look how revenge happened after. Still garbage human crap
Came here to say the same. Beat me to it
I'm surprised that this film isn't being trashed for being *woke*
@@Renegade2786 maybe it's because there's no such thing as "woke"🙄
Don't know if anyone has already answered this question yet, but a "prawn" is type of shrimp. The aliens do look rather shrimp-like. The only difference between a prawn and a shrimp, is that a shrimp has two legs (a pair) that have claws on the end, whereas a prawn has three pairs (six). My guess is that the term "prawn" is being used in this movie as a species slur.
absolutely a slur theres no hidden veil on that one
Yes a complete slur. Bottom feeders
A shrimp is what they call a prawn in the US
This is one movie I'd never want a sequel to. I think it ended perfectly and left the rest to our imagination in a brilliant way.
You must be disappointed that they have announced a sequel then. I for one can't wait for it, few things worse than wasting a great universe with a one hit wonder.
I saw it in theaters. The special effects have a visceral and organic reality to them that $500 million budget CGI fests can't even come close to today. It's a shame District 10 never came.
I remember the trailer for Avatar being on before this film at the cinema. This film blows that out of the water
@@karenarcher10 the way of water connects all things
@@karenarcher10It does not.
Prawns - are large shrimp, which is what they kind of look like. So, yea....it was being used as a derogatory term.
If you like the transition to alien, I think you’ll love The Fly” with Jeff goldblum. That is such a good movie with great effects for the 80’s
It's already been done in the channel: czcams.com/video/JUkBRpLpU4s/video.html
The thing I love the most about this movie, is how emotive the aliens are. Probably the best alien design and execution I’ve ever seen, and I think what really sells it is the eyes. I have no idea HOW they managed to do it, but you look into the eyes of these aliens and you can see it’s a sentient being with a soul, not just some CGI approximation. They’re strangely familiar, but at the same time utterly alien to anything we know of physically and in terms of society and their internal thought processes. So much so that it’s actually quite unnerving and disturbing, especially with how they’re treated by the humans.
What they did was time consuming, they basically drew the aliens in frame by frame on top of the actor wearing the motion capture suit and then removed the actor underneath the CGI alien. Kind of like what they did with Gollum in LotR.
But, as explained, it's time consuming and expensive and not worth it in todays era of mass-produced trash.
One of the most original stories ever put to film. Brilliant.
What a Suprise! Such a fantastic movie. Thanks you both for reacting to this gem!
This is going to be good Ive been waiting on a Distict 9 sequel for 10+ years!
check out district 13
If you guys ever want a scifi classic try a movie called Enemy Mine.
That's a good movie.
My family quotes from that movie regularly. Loved it. I have been looking for it on DVD.
Badass movie! The next one after this u guys should react is elysium (2013). Even has the same actor from district 9 but playin the villian n it stars matt damon. Dope ass movie both are my favorites. If im correct there makin a part 2 for district 9. Keep the vids rollin in gs. Love u guys
This movie was a huge hit sensation, and then after seems to have gotten largely forgotten. A sequel has long been in the works, and as of most recent District 10 is supposed to start filming this year or next, but after all this time until they start roilling the cameras no one is holding their breath.
For me the Blomkamp movies and shorts really nail the high tech low life aesthetic better than any movies the last 10 years, before them it was usually bladerunnner and akira that were the cyberpunk look.
All I can say is after the reality of NASA during the moon race, with Star Trek and many movies/shows (2001 Space Odyssey) presenting a very 'clean' and almost medical quality to their sets, Star Wars brought that same dirty, used, dinged-up look to the equipment while the Empire kept the old 'clean aesthetic'. I believe that was another link to the success of Lucas.
He could do a great job with William Gibson books. Gibson wrote the Johnny Mnemonic story, which could have been a lot better.
Me and my buddy weren't expecting much when we saw it. What a lovely hidden gem, deserves all the credit it gets.
I was so goddamn hype when Wikus started fighting back.
There's a series of Shorts this director did if you guys wanna check em out, it's called Oats Studio, the one called "Zygote" really interested me, creepy ass creature design too
What an unexpected treat! Saw this twice in theaters.
so glad you guys got to witness this movie. is perfect from start to finish
I love this movie! It was so underrated!
Jo'burg was my home town, born and raised there, a pretty cool movie. Moved to Florida, by the Everglades about 30 years ago. Thanks guys.
Such an underrated movie...I've always liked it 👍
You have been rockin’ lately boys!
Keep ‘em coming!
This movie has some of the best worldbuilding and character work in modern scifi. You can really understand the motivations of every single character. I like the ending; it's triumphant not because it's a perfect ending for the characters, but because Wikus did the right thing in the end, and there's hope for him. It's not a guarantee, but as long as there's hope then he can endure.
I'd recommend the movie Chappie. Same director.
Have you guys seen "Elysium" (2013) with Matt Damon? It's a pretty cool movie, the actor that plays Wikus is also in it, but he plays a completely different character.
It has some great effects and similar vibe as District 9, but no aliens.
One of the better science fiction modern films done. Was fun to see you both embrace this underrated gem
This guy makes sci fi bangers. Elysium and chappie should go on the list.
Europa report was also a good watch
Chappie was alright EXCEPT for the 2 idiots from Die Antwoord
@@geofftottenperthcoys9944 i wish i could disagree the movie was good enough but why not just kill the guy they were afraid of or send chappie. Huge plot hole
Is elysium good been thinking about watching it
@@geofftottenperthcoys9944 it was a great movie. I think Ninja and yolandi did good in chappie. Shitty ppl irl tho. If you can look past that it's a good movie I loved it
The more I see this movie, the more I love it! Its so well made and very impressive!
I love this flick! Another great sci-fi movie from Neill Blomkamp is Elysium. It has Sharlto Copley (the guy who played Wikus). Underrated but very good in my opinion. Worth checking out if you liked this one!
he did chappie aswell didnt he
@@TheAcewild24 Yeah, but I never saw that one, heard it was kinda shit. Plus idk how eager I was to watch Die Antwoords acting skills 😆
Elysium is great visually but really subpar when it comes to the script. It's actually really, really bad.
Watch Filmentos "Anatomy of a Failure" to understand why.
@@deemonik Chappie is trash too, really bad script and to include Die Antwoord in it... just, no.
It does raise some nice questions about the advent of AI and how to treat artificial persons, but it's not something that other movies haven't done before (and better, Blade Runner being one of them).
@@emil87th Well I enjoyed it. Really no urge to see Chappie
I saw this at a sneak preview screening about 2 weeks before it came out, I went in totally blind as far as what I was going to see and I was blown away.👍
I love this movie too. The way it was shot... the documentary like scenes... and the whole story, I really like it. And also that unanswered questions. That is great.
I am just not sure if sadly or thankfully there is no sequel to this movie.
But there is another good sci-fi movie made by this director (including the actor too) and that is Elysium.
I'm so glad you guys watched this, I LOVE this movie!
You guys are great every reaction you guys do. I love how you guys look and try to see on both sides of the story. I'm glad I found u guys keep it up
Saw this one in theaters. Really upset they never came out with a sequel but at this point id be worried for one based on today's track record for film and entertainment
look up district 10
Let’s be honest, if this movie or a movie like it came out today people would be screaming about how “woke” it is
In the same mood , same director you have elysium and chappie .
I love that you can just tell that Blokamp must be an avid computer gamer. The mission at the government facility is just like a challenging level in a really good game. The same goes for Wikus activating and using the mech suit.
The weapon that wikus had was an ARC gun and it shoots electricity that turns all your bones in the body and liquefies it inside to where the body just explodes.
This movie was based off of a short movie, also by Neil Blomkamp called 'Alive in joburg', also starring Sharlto Copely.

Glad you watched this; it was an outstanding movie.
All the real-world parallels of apartheid are as bad, or worse than the depictions in this movie. I’ve only watched this movie all the way through twice. I think it’s important to watch something like this from time to time. It’s important to make yourself face this stuff. Schindler’s List is the absolute top of any list of movies, or stories, that fall under that kind of umbrella.
It's so cool to watch others authentically enjoy a movie I've loved for years!! I thought it was done in such a "realistic" way that completely sold the "documentary style". You even have empathy for the way they are treated (& the parallel to how REAL people are treated is especially clever - and satisfying!). I bought the dvd for this movie (before streaming became so popular) and the commentary is super cool too! (I use to buy dvds based on whether or not the movie had commentary. LOL! I love the convenience of streaming but definitely miss the commentaries.) Although I really wanted a sequel, I think it's perfect the way it is... Thanks for the reaction!
Ah the City of Johannesburg never ceases to amaze me 😄. Once I had walked down one of the main streets in Johannesburg coming from the court house and a film crew was busy shooting Avengers (scene where Iron Man and The Hulk fight it out). Pretty surreal stuff. Unfortunately I never made it into any of the scenes 😂.
This 30 million budget masterpiece puts hollywoods 200+ Mill. Dollar garbage movies into shame. Not only the superior Special FX, its also the attachment you get with the characters is pure gold, i can´t remember the past years the last time when i really cared about a movie character.
The same director made a movie with Matt Damon called Elysiom. Another great sci-fi film.
That film's also got Sharlto Copley in it.
ahh I'm so glad you guys watched this! I haven't come across many people who have heard of this film let alone watched it! and I absolutly loved this film! :D Really wished they had made a 2nd one! :) loved the video guys! :D
One of THE BEST sci-fi films ive ever seen. So toughing💔 I was SOOOO disappointed that part 2 got cancelled😭😭😭
There's a sci fi movie called The Lathe of Heaven, based on a book by Ursula K. LeGuin. It's about a man whose dreams become reality, and a scientist who manipulates his dreams to, he hopes, make the world a better place. He instructs the man to dream that we all come together and stop fighting each other. The man dreams that alien spaceships arrive and hover over the Earth. I thought of that when I saw how everyone banded together against the creatures.
I like this movie. It felt like a mockumentry a little at 1st. Then once it got going, enjoyed it.
One of my favorite movies of all time
It doesn't make sense to me how CGI from 2009 looks better than most of what you see in 2023.
Fantastic is the perfect word to describe this movie.
Great review!
this came out my freshman year at uni. I remember seeing it in theaters and was absolutely in love with the visual style and VFX.
Prawns are like shrimp. They're saying the aliens look like shrimp. Oh, and "fookin proons!!"

This movie is so good love the video octokrool stay motivated Dream big 1 mill on the way
Lead actor Sharlto Copley and director Neil Blomkamp reunited for Elysium and Chappie. Another alien/military film to watch is Battle Los Angeles
This movie is based on the short film by Neil Blomkamp called "Alive in Joberg." you can find that short film here on CZcams.
Amazing movie. I just love everything about it. The story is just brilliant. Such a different take on the alien johnra.
... are you trying to say "genre"?
Jfc... "johnra"...
Y'all have been getting great movies lately. I'm always like this is gonna be fun.
I always had the feeling that the aliens could understand human language, just not speak it, and some humans, like Wikus, had learned to understand the aliens. Remember when Wikus first met Christopher and said he was being evicted, Christopher said "What is evicted?" When Wikus told him he needed to sign the form, he said "No, I will not sign"
Ey, one of the few good products that my country has delivered in the past 30 years. XD
District 9 sure broke the mold in sci-fi with its overlapping themes drawn from real life events in South Africa and reversing the roles of the oppressed and the oppressor. It's a stellar movie, and many of us are looking forward to the long-awaited sequel which has finally been announced.
Just think: this movie was made after Fox and Universal backed out of a Peter Jackson-produced Halo movie because the director (Blomkamp) was an unknown. They wanted a $125 million budget, and the studios balked. District 9 was a $30 million budget. Imagine what they could have done together for $125 million.
I think I read some theory or maybe it was mentioned in the movie. Survivors on the ship were mostly simple workers, but all command, military and scientists fell to some illness and the workers couldn't man the ship.
Good evening from Tokyo. Your review is excellent. Also your theories on Wikus as well.
Saw this on Netflix but the beginning looked much like a documentary and not very cinematic so I didn't watch more. Only later I thought, let's give it another try. I'm glad I watched it completely because it's one of my favorite SF movies. I went to highschool with Peter Muyzers, one of the guys who did the VFX. Never thought he would be going into VFX let alone work on a movie like this.
The main actor, Sharlto Copley is also in The A-Team and Elysium. You guys would like both of those too
Fantastic film,I'd never heard of it and was blown away when I randomly watched it.
Love this movie. First time watching ur reaction. ..see how this goes...like the energy so far
i remember watching this back when i was young
Elysium and Chappie both great movies made by the same guy.
Tuskgee Airmen is a great heartfelt and accelerating movie
Rollercoaster of emotions
At the end of the movie, when he is making the flower and lookd at the camera, his right eye is still blue i notice that after watching this i went to watch it again and notice that.
The producer of this film made a few more movies, the most recent one is 'Elysium'.
I love this movie. One of the few movies I can watch repeatedly and it never gets old.
I liked Wikus' arc a lot.
Speaking of DK, I sure wish I knew the copyright free instrumental y'all was using at the end of your videos a month or so ago.that tune just makes me feel like it's the 90s again.
This story is set in South Africa, home of Apartheid.
The exterior sets are actual resident slums.
The treatment of the aliens is based on how native blacks were treated; Trevor Noah comes from this.
One thing that may be odd is language, but apparently communication between whites and the various tribal blacks (who had their own tribal languages) was a matter of growing up in this multilingual environment. You might not be able to speak the other languages, but each speaker is able to translate for their own understanding. The filmmaker applied this real world feature to being able to communicate between humans and aliens.
To answer your questions about how the aliens got there, I forget where I read it, but these aliens were slaves of an overseer class/species. The ships would go out to other planets, pick up resources (slave labor), and return to home planet. But this ship ran into an environmental issue (virus maybe) and died, leaving the slave aliens without leadership, without someone to tell them what to do. Eventually they bumped into Earth, and here we are.
Think of them as shipwrecked.
Two other very worthwhile Neill Blomkamp films to watch is "Chappie" and "Elysium".
"Elysium" stars Matt Damon, with villains played by Jodie Foster and Sharlto Copley (who played Wikus in "District 9"). Sharlto is incredibly badass in "Elysium".
Love this film, love your reactions to it. So glad you enjoyed the film. I really enjoyed you enjoying it (and enjoyed you hating certain parts of it).❣
One of my favorite movies, I saw when it came out in the cinema and wish a sequel would happen.
And just think, this guy was gonna make a Halo movie till it fell apart, so Peter Jackson was like, heres 30 mill, go nuts.
Absolutely love District 9. Check out Elysium!
To be fair, transforming while falling apart would be utterly terrifying. Especially not even knowing if you were truly dying. I understood his panic at learning it would be 3 years before he could be helped. In the end as an alien making that flower showed he was still himself. That would suck so bad stuck in that form.
the special effects on this movie are insane just watched a video on how they were made highly recommend it
This was originally supposed to be the "Halo" game franchise movie. Peter Jackson was on board to make The Halo movie, but it fell through due to copyright arguments between Microsoft, Universal and Fox, and rather than scrap all of the work he had put into making this cool Alien movie, they made District 9 instead.
What seems to have happened is that the leadership caste, the more intelligent ones, was all but wiped out during the voyage. Only one or two survived and they spent the next 28 years trying to acquire enough raw material from scraps to produce their vial of weird liquid which seems to be required for the control ship to function.
District 9 is definitely a great movie.
This is still one of my favourite films, your reactions to all the alien weapons was jokes😂
the hurtful part of this movie is to think the aweful way they treat the aliens in this film, is how half the planet treats the otehr half, daily
This movie was insanely good!
This movie was randomly on TV one night and I was immediately hooked engrossed and immersed like totally frozen just watching such a great unique organic original non hollyweird flick superb acting all round....watg Elysium also
Alien body parts grilled is perfectly fine. Cajun rub recommended.
19:22 my favorite part of this video because of that synchronised Woooooo 😮😮😮
You guys are the kings of the "act like buttheads" style of movie reviews. Actually, you are the only ones.
Ah yes, planet Sun, my favorite planet
Great place, very warm.
Such a fantastic movie. I love the thought provoking process of aliens coming to a location on Earth that would be considered considered
Great reaction!
There's a blurb in the movie that they suspect the majority of the aliens were some kind of servant caste with minimal intelligence. There is probably some bias, but most of the aliens seem a bit slow. They are able to rig nutrition systems for their eggs, which shows some ingenuity, but they seem to run mostly on instinct. Christopher, his son, and his friend seem uniquely intelligent. The kid understood Wikus was patronizing him with the "sweetie." Before that, they were shown using cat food for "crowd control."
The aliens can learn to understand English, but not speak it. Humans can learn to understand alien, but not speak it. Wikus was able to threaten Christopher with taking his child, and Christopher was resisting the eviction. They both understood each other. Wikus also thought he had misheard the "clicks" during the "three years" part later on.
If you liked the principal actor, you might also like him in Hardcore Henry.
