    Great Nathan Rabin quote:
“The Fanatic never explicitly establishes exactly what is going on with Moose neurologically so Travolta plays him as someone who doesn’t possess a mental illness but rather all of them. It’s as if Travolta went to a mental hospital and decided to adopt the tics and mannerisms of everyone he encountered, even the staff and the visitors. “

It's not really autistic either. Autistic adults can show almost no signs of autism, not to mention that high intelligence people also have some autistic tendencies and they're actually pretty common with a huge part of people having some form of behaviourism derived from them. Fun fact about the "regal" character played by Rosie O'Donnell. She's a real person, and lives in Reading Pa. The locals here know her as the "Furby Lady". When I was in high school, I worked at a local Wendy's. I ran the cash register at the time. One day the "Furby Lady" came in and wanted to order. But before she came up to the counter, she moved 3 tables side by side along with 8 chairs to fit each spot. She then took her backpack off and place it on 1 of the chairs & proceeded to reach in and pull out Furby after Furby until all 7 furbys were placed in each chair, leaving one chair for herself to sit in. Once she had settled them in, she came up to the counter and wanted to place an order. I shit you not...she ordered 1 baked potato with the container half filled with water and demanded a straw be poked through each potato so that it could reach the water below. Not only did we accommodate her, we also served each one to her and her furbys and left them to enjoy their meal. Long story short, she got pissed off at the furbys for not eating their meals, got loud and angry about it, grounded each and every one of them with a scolding, packed them back into her bag and returned to the counter asking for a refund (which we gave her) all while apologizing for the furbys behavior. She then left the building and took the bus back home (I'm assuming).
Years down the line, I was working at blockbuster. I used to have to take the bus to get out to 5th Street highway. I get on the bus and start feeding my $2 for the bus fare and the whole time I'm doing this, I hear a baby just whaling and crying, it was insanely loud. I turn around to walk back and take a seat and I see the "Furby Lady" sitting in a seat up front with a mechanical stuffed panda on her lap...except the panda was the whaling baby that I initially heard. She was consoling it like a mother to a new born. Needless to say...my mind was blown.

I spent six years working extensively with spectrum disorders. John Travolta reminds me of a very specific man I helped for about five months. It’s uncanny. He’s super uncomfortable to watch in this, but that man was super uncomfortable to work with. Robert DJ was right, you never go full regal. It’s way too hard to watch. People who don’t know this is what it can look like can’t comprehend it, and people who know it well see this and get stuck comparing it to the real world. There’s almost a subliminal effect, like going to a zoo and seeing violent predators in cages from a few feet away, you can watch peacefully enough, but you can never shake the feeling that there’s something wrong with the situation. The 4 year olds looking at the big cat would be a snack anywhere else. And the people watching the film wouldn’t be watching this closely anywhere else, they’d just try to ignore the person in order to prevent the embarrassment of all parties involved. Cinema makes it safe to be a voyeur, but with full regal, where the character isn’t clearly overcoming things in the world but is barely surviving them, people see something that has too much dissonance with what they’d tolerate watching in the real world to accept it on film.

I'm also late to the party, but that's interesting from my perspective on the other side of it, being on the spectrum with associated comorbid issues.
Things like this film make me uncomfortable whether the disorders depicted are made explicit or not and even if done accurately/tastefully. Can be hard to watch as you say, yet I've also always had a sort of morbid fascination with it.
I can't however get too bothered by how fair depictions are of autism especially. It's only been in the past decade or so that science and then the general public have started understanding it better. It's complex like anything to do with the brain and hard to make sense of the spectrum being, y'know, a spectrum.

Actually, after DOCTOR Evans won his second Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, he made a very public vow to never take on another "Digital" role. This statement was widely viewed by the Pre-Post-Post-Modern Filmtelligentsia as a statement of protest and solidarity after the needless and gruesome death of beloved "character actor" Ser Andrew Serkis - known by Filmthusiasts in every corner of Bunker Earth for his timeless and captivating performance in the paradigm-shifting "Avengers: Age of Ultron" from Pre-Great-End 2015.
As every "Serkis Freak" knows, Ser Serkis tragically perished in 2021 when a "... mountain..." (B.J. Synger, "The Good Old Days" - 2024, Saint Bay's Press) of CGI procesor farms "... rained down like boulders," (Synger again) onto Ser Serkis following a critical Windows 12 meltdown and the subsequent studio-wide inferno.
Doctor Evans and his historic oratory on the systemic, industry-wide and endemic abuse of so-called "CGI-Sluts" are now widely credited with kick-starting the "RGI" (Reality Generated Images) movent of 2022, spearheading the filmic rennaissance of the young directors' movement now known as the "NBRGI" period (Negative Budget Reality Generated Images) that would blossom following the Big End and the Great Subterranean Migration to Bunker Earth.
In conclusion, Doctor Rich Evans would never agree to be a "CGI Slut" and his tenacity in fighting for this issue is estimated to have saved over 300 "digital performers'" lives.
All Filmtelligentsients in every echoing cavern of Bunker Earth owe a tremendous debt to Dr. Rich Evans and your attempted joke is intrinsically paradoxical on a fundamental level to anyone who has spent even a modicum of time combing the Hall of Burnt Records for contemporary (and posthumous) sources on Dr. Evans' career.

There were definitely moments where I could see glimpses of some of my former students behaving in similar ways, though as an educator the goal is to try and set them up to be as independent as possible. Some are able to basically live alone with roommates, take the bus too and from work and are quite fine being on their own to some degree. The more independent they can be the better quality of life they're typically going to have, because in some cases for whatever reasons - their family may not be around for assistance.

In defense of not speaking to the police when being arrested (37:30), while perhaps not believable (most people would try to explain things) it is most likely the best actual behavior. The evidence isn't going anywhere (except maybe rope marks on his wrists, although those should be documented upon booking), and the police are an adversary in a legal game, so waiting until you have a lawyer to provide advice and take action for you is almost certainly the best choice to maximally defend yourself legally.

    • @guthax30
      @guthax30 Před 2 lety +7

But the character is portrayed as having zero guile or subtlety. It makes zero sense that "Hunter Dunbar" would be able to keep his cool around the cops when he's known for having a hair-trigger temper around the mentally challenged. The dude would have broken down and spilled his guts immediately. Problem with this movie is just the script...it looks great, it's acted well, but someone decided that Limp Biscuit references and Poppycock and constant ad-libbing was okay for the dialogue. This is what happens when pretentious film-makers under estimate the importance of a good script which is the foundation for the rest of the film. The first line of dialogue in the movie is "Can't talk, gotta poo". That's what the writer chose to open his dark, brooding script about para-social behavior with; that's what he chose to set up the whole mood of this film. It's just insane. 😂

Honestly a single scene saying how awesome Limp Bizkit was back in the day is humble and self-aware for Fred Durst.

Or it was just a patch. This movie was obviously low budget, so Fred picking a song for the scene he already owns the rights to and doesn’t have to pay for seems not only practical, but a little in-joke.

You guys keep saying the people like this need to be institutionalized. But all institutions will do will drug them up and send them on their way for a couple of days. I think what you're meaning to say is he needs to be put in a DSP program. Institutions don't help long-term DSP programs help integration into society.
