7 April rearranging the shed, Merlo power and a mummified lamb 🤢

- in 2009 i had no experience of farming or the realities that came with it. That soon changed when I met my other half Roy, I had a job as a carer and in every spare moment threw myself into farming. I had only ever driven a Nissan Micra and had experience with horses, I learnt the hard way as nobody had the time to show me and soon after arriving I found myself mothering on calves to three quarter bred limmy cows. We spent every available moment on the farm between our day jobs. Fast forward to 2016 two children later we moved into our very own farm overlooking the northern Pennines, Laitha.
we are in a transitional period at present and will finally be milking cows and making the final switch later this year, after years of planning and implementing infrastructure we will be milking 120 Jersey cows on two Lely robots. This will be a huge change and a steep learning curve

I am overjoyed to be a farmer. I feel so fortunate every day to wake up and do what I love and even better share it with the world and hope it inspires more young people from Preston to spread their wings and think outside the box the world doesn’t need more childcare workers or hairdressers it needs more farmers.

Well I have a complaint, That video was so good it finished so fast, lol. Really enjoyed it, the little babies are so cute. wooly jumper on a little lamb. I agree with Roy the overhang would have done my head in too. My hubby has just told me he has been watching you for about a year, Wish he told me sooner, Take care. Witchy X
One of my first pet lambs, Dolly, broke a hind leg in a pallet while trying to escape...... Two lolly sticks and some vet wrap later she was back om her feet playing with the other lambs ( I had been advised to have her put down but hey, she was my baby)

Glad you moved the panel, the lines just didn’t line up 😂. Those tiny black lambs are going to look funny when they are out running around the field with the rest of the lambs. That’s amazing how many black and white twins you are having Charlotte

Really enjoying the lambing, all the cuteness and sheer joy of lambs in the field. The non-dentical twins is certainly interesting (trying to be very PC on that terminology)
Jersey farmer here… 600 is a bit much. Are you feeding on the floor? Heifers might struggle. Keep upping the frame size of your milkers, keeping away from midgets that happen. I have my rail set at 460mm and some of our smallest girls make it work. Keep the feed pushed up.
Got to agee with Roy that odd panel would've driven me mad too. Great work with the lambs, must've been some right shenanigans going on with all the black and white twins.
That panel, if the cows are going to be eating over it off the floor the other side looks too high to me? Also, I would've blocked in-between the uprights, so both sides were flush with the uprights, so both sides could be scraped easily. The muck side is ok as it is, but scraping any waste food away will be a pain unless it's a hand job around the bottoms of them- and when you're busy, which you will be, any extra hand work like that will be a pain in the bum rather than a tractor/bobcat scraper job.
I have 5 farmstream cameras around the yard. One covered an area that caught a person and the pictures were sent to the police who said it was the best definition from a camera they had seen. I would recommend too anyone as well.

Firstly the lamb in pink boots needs a youtube short with backing track these boots are made for walking 😂 secondly leg warmers last time I seen them was in the TV programme called fame 😂😂😂early 80s I think 😂thirdly how long do u keep a lamb before u sell it ?
Fair play, I couldn't be a sheep farmer I'd be sick with the mummified or dead ones. Lambs are all cute indeed.

Better withe the 600mm go to low and the tend to try climbing over it. We did have to raise ours another 50mm for that reason

The 600mm panel should be fine for your Jerseys. I put 500mm panels in for a feed barrier and had to put a rail above it because I have a Jersey cross and she could step over it as the top rail was set high for the big cows. She can still reach the feed on the ground fine and the height will be slightly over 600.

Chance you maybe able to save the old camera if it outputs rtsp. Also look into local cctv/ rtsp anyway, so you aren't locked into a provider. Nothing worse then 'Internet of things' provider deciding to drop support, so always go local connection

I had 3 ewes every yer have one of each only with one ram but all had sum jacob in ewes or welsh black
If the feed passage is the same floor height as where the cow is standing yes those panels are too tall . If the feed passage is 100mm higher they`ll be fine

U do know if u just open the window on de door u can open the door from the inside even if de door is locked on de outside
Those panels are too high! We have bigger cows and we have 500 panels and if I was to do it over 450 is probably what I would have. The higher the panels the less they can reach out and you can also get a bit of stuff building up at the bottom of the panels which is just plain nasty and has to be cleaned away and in your case it will have to be cleaned away by hand because you have the panels bolted to the inside of the rsj ( for obvious reasons) . We are inclined to feed little and often but even if we were trying to put a lot of stuff in front of them what you lose in reach doesn’t really gain you any more available feed if you know what I am getting at ? In fairness we do have diagonal feed rails for all our cows for the simple reason that we zero graze and we don’t have a large enough operation to divide up the heifers for the main herd so the barriers help enormously as they reduce bullying at the feed rails, now they are not locking barriers or anything fancy just the standard diagonal ones but they have been helpful in keeping the stronger animals from beating the others away from the feed. Before we put them in you would often see a big strong old girl not letting anyone eat within her bay (15 foot) anyway I diverse , put simply, rethink your panels, 2 foot is a bit high for a cow that stands 5’ 5” at the shoulder in my opinion and you intend to have cows that stand 4’ 6” at the shoulder? Before you put them all up maybe ask the guy who’s selling you the cows what he thinks as I know nothing about jerseys. Regards from Ireland fyi I remember when leg warmers were the coolest trend out, you could have started their reincarnation as something useful now!

600 good for holsteins,but not jerseys,reach will be compromised but not a disaster,will be more important where your putting in feed belt as you need stretch to clean it up
Those pink boots are fabulous. I think I need to invest in some leg warmers for the lambs as thats worked a treat.
