in 2009 i had no experience of farming or the realities that came with it. That soon changed when I met my other half Roy, I had a job as a carer and in every spare moment threw myself into farming. I had only ever driven a Nissan Micra and had experience with horses, I learnt the hard way as nobody had the time to show me and soon after arriving I found myself mothering on calves to three quarter bred limmy cows. We spent every available moment on the farm between our day jobs. Fast forward to 2016 two children later we moved into our very own farm overlooking the northern Pennines, Laitha.
we are in a transitional period at present and will finally be milking cows and making the final switch later this year, after years of planning and implementing infrastructure we will be milking 120 Jersey cows on two Lely robots. This will be a huge change and a steep learning curve

I am overjoyed to be a farmer. I feel so fortunate every day to wake up and do what I love and even better share it with the world and hope it inspires more young people from Preston to spread their wings and think outside the box the world doesn’t need more childcare workers or hairdressers it needs more farmers.

“ I don’t think she has the mental capacity to run around the field after her lamb” honey my diagnosis is sleep deprivation! It happens to us all at this time of the year, you know the tail end of the lambing. YOU NEED TO GET RAIN COATS FOR YOUR LAMBS…. If you watch the sheep game YT Channel you can see the type of raincoats he has for his lambs an use the idea for your flock

i think the shed is looking absolutely superb, the only thing i may have done different was bring the cladding down over the blockwork, down to the dpc. the blockwork is only single skin and driving rain will soak straight through, making the inside of the store rooms damp, and mouldy alteratively you should maybe consider at least a drip flashing at the bottom of the cladding to throw rain water running down the cladding away from the blockwork , as i say looks superb and a credit to all involved

The shed is looking amazing. Just 1 question: Should you have kept the knee wall barriers where you will be feeding your cows to the outside of the pillars? By keeping them on the inside of the pillars, it will be harder to clean along the front of the knee walls with the pillars in the way?
No wonder they didn't double fence hedges ages ago. They must like the shelter under the hedges. 😊

When did you say the jerseys are due now, mid may? A lot to still do yet, its all the last bits you come across that need doing that takes up a lot of time, plus gettinv the bots installed, wired up etc and running.
What are you using for bedding on the cubicle beds out of interest charlotte? Whos AI'ing them when theyve settled down, i take it your installing some sort of catching system from the robots? Just interested as ex manager to what youre planning. Cheers lady!!

when you hear government people talking about hedgerows and hedgerow fencing....... they call hedges corridors for wildlife.......they couldn't give a stuff about your lambs.......they can shiver to death out in the middle of the field for all they care. when you were talking about the lamb with no hair i thought you were talking about me.........(my thatch is getting a bit thin)......he' so bloody ugly he's kinda cute😃😃.so nice to hear your friends story about alder hay hospital ........you don't realise what a fantastic job those places do until you hear these story's........bet it made his day seeing the cute little lambs
It did he’s a really happy little kid you would think he’s never seen a problem in his life. If we can help him raise a couple of hundred quid then it’s worth it :)

Your shed is looking great now the windows and doors are in, loving the black. You may put a few gates in to save you having to walk so far to get into the next field 😂. That last lambing was a hard one for you. It’s the first time I’ve seen you look exhausted afterwards. Have a good nights sleep.

Can i ask.. Well I'm going to. Why are you blocking the wall where the tank is. Won't it make it difficult if you need to do maintenance? I'm sure you've thought all about this with everything else being so well planned.
It was never to be blocked. The 3 15 foot spare panels were to go in and a stud wall above. We knew the Heath Robinson system would require “access” fast forward and we’ve gone brand new 🙈 When the day comes and we have to be back in to the tank room, front wall will come out and an expensive folding glass door will go in. Hopefully this will be 15 years away and we should have a few milk cheques in the bank by then!x
