  • Although there are different sizes of ice hockey rinks across the world, you will find that most rinks in North America have a standard size and many rinks in other areas of the world have another standard size (usually called an Olympic-sized rink). Which means that if you are watching the NHL or playing on your local rink (in North America), you are likely looking at the same size rink. And if you are watching the Olympics or skating in Europe, you are also likely looking at the same size rink. Here are the common hockey rink dimensions for both sizes of ice rinks.

I’ve played on both. Until you actually play on an Olympic rink, you can’t fathom just how much more real estate there is to skate on. Shifts are much shorter to accommodate the extra ice surface.
    Good explanation you did.

Right?! My very first practice was on an Olympic sheet and I thought I was going to die. It's almost painful to even watch those games now, there is so much ice!

In the NHL dimension rink the demands are so much greater to think quickly, to develop a high hockey IQ. I'm sure many stars playing Euro pond hockey would have a hard time adjusting to the smaller rink.
