Heads up to others who haven't tried this hack yet!! This is a great tutorial, clearly explained and very well filmed, with one exception that cost me a good deal of fabric and time. Before you first put a stitch into your waterproof lining, please know that she will instruct you to sew the long seam shut. That is, she will NOT instruct you to leave a 5" gap, as in the original pattern (for turning later). Instead, as soon as you’ve stitched the seam shut, she will direct you to use your seam ripper to rip open the seam again. I tried this "technique" with three different pieces of waterproof canvas lining (I was making three sling bags, and unfortunately, I sewed them all as she instructed, right in a row, before watching the next step) that all had to be scrapped as I ended up ripping every single one of them. So, again -- around the 41 minute mark, really consider if you want to follow her advice or if you want to just leave a 5" opening, as the original pattern calls for.
Glad you liked the Video, Lindsay. This technique is an old school method to make your seams more crisp in the end and is very common, especially in clothing. It’s not a must do but it’s a trick that some people like, some people don’t.
I’m not sure why it would cost you any extra time or fabric, unless you accidentally cut into your fabric when seam ripping. A nice sharp ripper, as seen here in the video doesn’t add extra time or effect the fabric.
Either way, you can definitely choose to skip this step and do your own thing. Happy sewing! :)

Really liked this, so thank you!! I do want to point out one thing, though. When you drew the corners for the bottom, you didn't take the folded edge into account, which is why it didn't line up properly when you boxed them. If the seam on the bottom is 3/8", you need to reduce the folded side by the same amount, as there is no seam there. I hope this is helpful.

I'm confused....what folded side are they mentioning? I am definitely going to try this as I absolutely hated sewing that rounded bottom on the original. You don't really need to worry about it, because we trim the excess off the bottom anyway.

Hello, Thank you so much for your tutorial, I just tried this hack and worked wonderfully, I appreciate the details in your explanation, although I had a bit of trouble using Thermolan after I turned the bag, I got a lot of wrinkles!, is there some kind of trick to use Thermolan on this bag? I would appreciate any advice you can give me, I like the feeling of the final product but without the wrinkles would be wonderful.
I don’t usually have issues with wrinkles but on cotton, if I do, I just give it a light press with a medium/hot iron. It usually fixed it right up. You can try steam too.
Stuff a rolled up towel inside the bag and use that to press. It’s very useful.
I love this.. Got a!! The way to the end and could not get my webbing to sew with out making a mess on the other side. Not sure why this is happening.
Hmm could be an issue of thickness and your machine. Possibly try some thinner webbing or a fatter needle? I use a 75/11 but you may need to bump up to a 80/14.

I loved your tutorial! the box bottom hack is great, but I like the original front zip pocket. If I add the 2" to all the pieces like you did in the vid, will I be able to use your box bottom directions? TY!
Hey! Thank you! I think a different method would be called for to avoid your pocket ending up in the bottom of your bag. When we add 2” to everything, most of that new length ends up being on the bottom of the bag, as our boxed bottom. To avoid that, here is the way I would do this: I would cut all the pieces normally for the rounded front pocket, and body of the bag, per the pattern. I would then assemble the front pocket and attach it to the bag body, per the pattern. Once the pocket is attached, I would lay out the flat bag body and measure it across the bottom. Cut yourself a strip that is 2 3/8” tall (this gives you enough for a 3/8” seam allowance to attach the strip to the bag assembly) by the length of the bag assembly. I would then attach that across the bottom, then I would sew up the spine of the bag, turning it all into a cylinder. At this stage, you SHOULD be able to box the bottom per this tutorial and avoid bulk in the front, but keep true to the original rounded front pocket. I have not done this method before, but to my way of thinking, this should get you on the right path to a favorable outcome. You may need to tweak it a little though. Good luck!

Love your tutorial! Thank you for taking the time to be so thorough. Question for you. I’ve made the original H20, but I am curious in trying the boxed bottom hack. I was surprised (and a bit excited) to see that decovil was needed. Is it still sturdy enough? Also, hoping with your tips I can get a nice pretty zipper. Mine usually don’t look so square in the corners.
Even when I made the original h20, I use my same method of sew fuse (fusible cotton woven interfacing) and fusible fleece. It’s what I use for 90% of my bags I make. That method of stabilizing combined with the water proof canvas lining on this bag, + the boxed corners makes it plenty sturdy. I don’t like a puddly bag so if it wasn’t sturdy, I wouldn’t use it.
You may already know this, but if your corners on your inset zipper pockets are not square, it’s because you didn’t cut close enough into your corners when trimming out. You have to get so close in the corners, you might actually cut a stitch! Just try really really hard not to cut a stitch ;) it’s also important that you sew as perfect of a rectangle as possible. Any wiggly stitching will show on the final product. Turn your corners with the needle down as you rotate to the other sides of the rectangle to sew. Alternatively, you can try just sewing only the long sides of the rectangle, back stitching at the start and stop of each long line. Clip the corners just like I did. This method works well for some, and helps achieve more square corners.

I used to have this problem and I saw someone recommend only sewing the long edges and not the short ends of the rectangle. Really does the trick! And allows for easier trimming and turning :)

If I down size the pattern to 85 perfect. For a child. No pockets at all. Just main bag part. Would it be the same measurements by adding 2 inches to the bottom. And box it the same way as your video? Or do I need to reduce the squares to a smaller size? Thank you.

Ok I have always struggled with round bottom on this bag with the thickness of the card slot front making it look super neat. I love the card slot feature and I like the boxed bottom and wonder before I start messing with the math to combine boxed bottom with card slots if anyone has done this successfully?

Cute bag but I never did see a hack, just a tutorial for a modification to an existing pattern and known techniques.
Changing/altering an existing bag pattern is commonly known as “hacking” a pattern.

Yes you sure can :) I’ve made many with #5. Just make sure your opening is sized for it and you are extra careful centering the larger teeth of the #5 zip tape.
Ive made some of these, and the boxed squares are really hard to line up, and I feel they are not long enough to line up straight across when clipping them. I know you can't cut too much off other wise you wouldn't have a bottom. Your tutorial looks like yours line up great, but mine just doesn't seem to look like yours when I clip them, and its really ackward to sew... Is there a solution to this maybe?

I haven’t tried it on this specific bag but I think it would work perfectly fine. You’d need to interface well, to avoid the material stretching. Also, make sure your machine can handle the bulk of seams with interfaced CL, especially in the areas where the connectors for the strap go. The inset pocket will be a bit of an issue to turn because CL doesn’t like to iron down as flat as cotton woven, but if you can navigate these things, it’s totally doable!

I would like to figure out a way to add a pocket with dimension like a gusset type pocket but can't figure out how to attach it to the outside bag. Any ideas? I find it just a bit tight to add a cell phone to the bag as is but dont want to make it bigger and the cup tip while im wearing it.
Hmmm. I’d have to think on that. I’m currently on a Mav pack streak so it might be a while before I circle back to the H20!
Regarding the seam in the lining and leaving a gap for turning… you could stitch to the beginning of the gap, backstitch, continue stitching the seam (with a longer stitch length, if you want), backstitch at the end of the gap distance, then finish stitching the seam (returning the stitch length to normal). Does that make sense? It’s the same seam as you showed but with backstitching.
That's what I do, then seam rip between my back stitches
Yeah you could definitely do that, it's basically the same as how I did it, just all at once instead of going back and backstitching later. Either way you should be good.

If you’re referring to the original curved pocket, you can do a boxed bottom however you need to add length to the entire project under the curved pocket. I am unsure of the exact measurements, but I’ve seen others post that in the Linds Facebook group. I would head there and search to see if you can find how much to add to the bottom. I am a very new sewwer and want to make this bag. I want to the easier bottom but add a pocket in front that is flat, no zipper but will be able to hold a cell phone. I hope this makes sense. Is there a tutorial that would teach me how to make a pocket like that with this design shown here in this video?

There is a way, im sure. You’re need to add some length to that front pocket and do a lot of fiddling to get it correct but with some experimentation, I’m sure it could be done.

I think it would handle that. You may want to employ some fray check to make sure it doesn’t unravel.

What is the softer nylon webbing called? it's so much prettier!
I just went to amazon and looked for nylon webbing. It is much nicer than some of the stuff and dull types.

You would need to add additional material to the bottom of the bag but it is doable. I have seen others post that. However I’ve never done it myself.

You can. But you would need to do some additional things to make it work. I’ve not tried it myself but I have seen others do it. The Lind’s handmade group is so helpful and I know I’ve seen it posted there.

Could you use rivets on the webbing instead of sewing?
Yes you can, you'll need to make sure to burn the ends so they're less likely to fray, then fold the webbing over multiple times to evenly distribute the weight of the bag across multiple layers. If your machine can handle it, sewing is stronger, but rivets will work as well.
Can you pls share the link for the zipper tape you used?
I got my zipper from zip it on Etsy. It’s just a premade #3 zipper. I got their bundle pick your own color deals and buy a bunch at a time. They have great service and fast shipping.

There is a way but it does require some totally different techniques. I know I’ve seen others post about it in the Lind’s FB group.
I would like to know how can I adjust the pattern for a 40oz
I think it depends on how the 40oz is shaped. If it’s just taller, you would need to add height only but If the bottle is the same height as a yeti or similar, you would just have to add width to the large body and liner pieces.

Yes! The original bag is great and so practical too but it does take some advanced skills and a lot of time. While I love making it, it’s got to be for the right person who will appreciate all that work.

As far as size, I cut it to be the same as my body piece and fuse it right into the whole thing, seams and all. If you have issues with bulk, you may consider cutting it slightly smaller than the body, keeping it out of the SA.

Why does it have to be a #3? Can it be a 5. All my tape and hardware pulls are 5.
I used #5
It does not have to be 3 but I created this tutorial around ready made zippers, and typically those are #3 sized. However if you wanted, you can use #5. It would just be a really tight zipper channel with only teeth showing (if you follow these measurements).
