    Chris - Once the card companies realized their over-production mistake of the late 80's and early 90's; they tried to make up for it with the premium and mega premium sets (which we thought $5 for 5 cards was insane). Around when did the card companies finally back off production numbers for their base sets? Keep this style of video coming - super educational!

    • @collectorinvestordealer

      Great question... Im not actually sure how the production levels worked. I imagine they slowly phased them down in the 90s as people lost interest in base cards and building sets

    I gets under my skin everytime i think about Mark and Sosa. Those 2 alone brought back baseball from the dead after the strike. MLB and their cronies used them and turned their backs on them afterwards. Sad just sad.

      @HiFiPlayer Před 3 lety +5

      Yea I agree. And you know whats the irony of that era...now MLB juiced their baseballs so that there would be more homeruns. Many of those pop flies are now going into the bleachers. Also, the fact that the Commissioner and those in power allowed the Astros cheat their way to take the WS trophy with virtually zero punishment on any player. Makes me sick.

And another thing that bugs me - how come NO ONE has copied Roses batting stance? He bent over which gave him a lower strike zone and he had over 4000 hits - hello............copy it morons.

      I agree. He needs to be in the Sports Hall of Fame if not baseball’s. He put on the single greatest hitting performance I have ever seen at a game - 3 HRs in one game. Unfortunately, he broke his collar bone diving for a ball in the outfield before he got a chance at HR #4 (which I am certain he would have gotten - and it would have been better, or at least rarer, than seeing a perfect game!) Side note - the player that hit the ball Bo dived for was Deion Sanders - who got an inside the park HR on that play. The other great two sport player - but not as good as Bo! 1989 Yankee Stadium - probably can verify it somewhere. It was truly unbelievable.

Can't include all the then-hot non-HOFer rookie cards (Clark, Coleman, Joyner, etc.), but I might suggest adding the 1984 Donruss Joe Carter rookie to this list. Curious, do you use PSA 9 prices instead of PSA 10 prices as not to skew the data too much? Using PSA 10 prices would give us slightly different results, as I am sure you know. Kirk Gibson. As a huge Dodger fan in the 80's, it was one of those "I remember exactly where I was" when he hit that homer. Every so often I come across the clip on CZcams, and have to watch the entire at bat with Vin Scully's call and his 47 strike two foul balls (or some crazy high amount). After that homer I think I transferred the rookie cards of his that I had from "flimsy" plastic to hard plastic, something normally reserved for only my elite cards.
    After that series, I often wondered what odds I could have gotten in Vegas that Orel Hershiser would have more hits in the series than Canseco and McGwire combined!

In some cases, sold comps are higher than the Topps Traded Tiffany in PSA 9 with PSA and BGS 10s in the $16k to $18k range.

    Hey Chris - this is a great list to help us hunt down some 80's rookies - talking about the Steroids scandal, what's your take on the latest one that alleges pitchers using a cream/liquid to increase the rotation of the ball, which helps to increase speed?
    There are some great players waiting to get into the hall - Curt Schilling should be in for sure. Thanks very much for this list - looking forward to your next post. Cheers - stay safe.

    Really enjoying your videos far more than others. Being one of the people that is in the category of leaving the hobby during the junk wax era and recently re-engaging, I find it very informative what you do, especially with the videos on hobby trends, history, your history and opinions, Q&A. Speaking of Q&A, your position on opening wax makes sense, but I’m curious about sets. It seems that buying complete sets to get good condition tops cards is still a gamble, but much less of a gamble than opening wax packs/boxes. There are instances where there may be 2-3 key cards in a set and buying the complete set with the hope of getting 50-75% of the key cards in good condition and then having them graded seems to be far less expensive than buying those key cards individually already in psa case. What are your thoughts on this strategy and is this an approach you take at times? If yes would also love to hear what criteria you use for decision making? Basically tell us your secrets!...haha. Any feedback is appreciated and thank you for allowing us to learn from your experience!
    Will

      @collectorinvestordealer  Před 3 lety

      Hello Will, good question. Its not something that I really do much (maybe once in a while), but I generally prefer to leave sealed sets sealed. As sealed stuff usually goes up in value in the long run, and you can always open it later.
      That being said, I do know dealers who do exactly what you are saying, and quite successfully, so there is definitely something to it.

All but the Brett came new from packs and I had multiples of each one. I had at least 6 Hendersons. Hard times hit and I started selling them off in ‘91 to pay bills. I got way more than I paid, but not book at the time. Definitely nowhere near these numbers.

    So many of these cards going for sub $100. I know, coming into the junk era and all, but still that seems like a bargain for a lot of those guys.
    When I was collecting the first time as a kid, I was 10 in 1994, and was always just blown away by how consistently Boggs (and Gwynn) hit 300 back then. I wasn't like a stat nerd back then, but I knew most guys couldn't hit for .300, and most who did only did it a time or two, but those guys, they were a league of their own for consistent hitting.
    Love that original 84 and 85 topps design. They clean up really nice in 2019 and 2020 Chrome sets, too. Love them.

Only 1 of 4 players in history with 500 hr and 250 SB. Others in that group? Mays, Bonds and A rod. (Interesting only 1 clean out of the group). Also hit at a 292 clip for his career.
