I'm a male who cuts my own unit, and I've never seen the "twisting hair" technique! But it makes soooo much sense! Thank you for sharing that! Also, I like the way you were very descriptive about protecting the base of the unit, and making sure they used the blank/dull side of the sheers, and then bending it over. Very nice! The explanation of "why" you don't cut the very top part of the hair was also well explained... Overall, I agree with a lot of comments here! this is probably the BEST informative video on how best to use thinning sheers! Thank you for sharing!

You are so clever. Best wig-thinning vid ever. Thank you! I bought a new lace front, lace cap, heat resistant synth wig today. Love the rich chestnut color and the shag style but it has WAY too much hair and, on me, has what I think is a sort of wiggish-football-helmet look. Thinning it down to work with my short neck and round face will fix this and now, thanks to your totally brilliant demo, I know how to do it. New sub.
I don't have a wig person since I moved to Colorado. The lady in MD was fantastic and would thin wigs out for me. Since watching this tutorial, I honestly think I can do it myself now and take some of the bulkiness out of my wigs.

I had a $300 wig, a Jon Renu 'Alia' that is parted in the middle which doesn't look good on me anymore, it's been in its box for the two years that I've had it and your fine instructions, after watching several times, gave me the confidence to do it. Done and it came out perfectly!!! It has a mono top and a lace front, after the cut, the bangs fell nicely into place. Wish I could post a picture. Of course I'm very happy with the results! A well done video, thanks. I DO have one sort of technical question. Why is it important to have the flat part of scissors on top AND why do you pull the hair up & over the scissors? I'm almost ready to try this but it's a little scary too.
Hi Trish, Having the flat part of the scissor on top will remove the lower portion of the hair you are cutting which is what you want. The reason you pull a section up and then grab a section just underneath is so you don't end up with any hairs sticking straight up or shorter hairs visible from thinning. This will allow you to see the wig as lighter and thinner but no layering.

It would be nice to see a before and after of a wig thinning. Still, a nice explanation. Can you show how to use the single long thinning shears with cut and thinning on each side. I'm never sure which side to use.

Take your time and you can do it! Remember that it's with thinning shears. Also, never work on the top area of a wig. If you turn the wig upside down, you'll see a "U" shape - that's where you DON'T want to thin. Thin under that, where you see the open wefts. Hi Anita, honestly, we just get our scissors from Sally's Beauty. Basic costs; nothing too expensive...I do keep scissors for only my human hair and different ones for cutting synthetic hair since the synthetic fiber is harder on the blades; yet I've never had to replace them! Great video! Gives me hope for the bulky poofy wig I bought! Thanks for the video! Does this thinning technique help with the poofy look that perma teased hair gives or will the remaining hair still be poofy? I'm wondering if I will still have to work with a warm hair dryer and a spray bottle of water to tame the perma-teased hair after I thin it? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Hi Dottie, it sounds like you have a full on poofy wig, and just like a wig that's too thick(not ours) it doesn't matter how much you thin, it will still look like a thick wig. I would chock this wig up to the learning curve and use it as a tester for future things you want to try on a wig. Would you recommend a beginner use shears with more teeth and less spacing between? Or fewer teeth and more spacing? Thanks so much for all your videos. I’ve learned a lot!
Dear Cloud, excellent question! Beginners would do better thinning less at a time - this means smaller teeth and spacing in between. Safer to take 1 cut at time and then another if necessary instead of 1 big cut. Rochelle

I'm a male who cuts my own unit, and I've never seen the "twisting hair" technique! But it makes soooo much sense! Thank you for sharing that! Also, I like the way you were very descriptive about protecting the base of the unit, and making sure they used the blank/dull side of the sheers, and then bending it over. Very nice!
The explanation of "why" you don't cut the very top part of the hair was also well explained...

Love the rich chestnut color and the shag style but it has WAY too much hair and, on me, has what I think is a sort of wiggish-football-helmet look. @@GodivasSecretWigs I did it! I had a $300 wig, a Jon Renu 'Alia' that is parted in the middle which doesn't look good on me anymore, it's been in its box for the two years that I've had it and your fine instructions, after watching several times, gave me the confidence to do it.
Done and it came out perfectly!!!
It has a mono top and a lace front, after the cut, the bangs fell nicely into place. Wish I could post a picture. Of course I'm very happy with the results! Can't thank you enough!

A well done video, thanks. I DO have one sort of technical question. Why is it important to have the flat part of scissors on top AND why do you pull the hair up & over the scissors? I'm almost ready to try this but it's a little scary too.
Hi Trish, Having the flat part of the scissor on top will remove the lower portion of the hair you are cutting which is what you want. The reason you pull a section up and then grab a section just underneath is so you don't end up with any hairs sticking straight up or shorter hairs visible from thinning. This will allow you to see the wig as lighter and thinner but no layering.

It would be nice to see a before and after of a wig thinning. Still, a nice explanation. Can you show how to use the single long thinning shears with cut and thinning on each side. I'm never sure which side to use.

Fantastic tutorial. I almost have the nerve to try 😀 going to watch a few more times and go through the motions to get a feel for it first. Haha
Take your time and you can do it! Remember that it's with thinning shears. Also, never work on the top area of a wig. If you turn the wig upside down, you'll see a "U" shape - that's where you DON'T want to thin. Thin under that, where you see the open wefts. If in doubt, start low in the back first and read the other client comments - the may assist you too! xoxo Good luck xoxo Ro

Hi Anita, honestly, we just get our scissors from Sally's Beauty. Basic costs; nothing too expensive...I do keep scissors for only my human hair and different ones for cutting synthetic hair since the synthetic fiber is harder on the blades; yet I've never had to replace them! Does this thinning technique help with the poofy look that perma teased hair gives or will the remaining hair still be poofy? I'm wondering if I will still have to work with a warm hair dryer and a spray bottle of water to tame the perma-teased hair after I thin it? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Hi Dottie, it sounds like you have a full on poofy wig, and just like a wig that's too thick(not ours) it doesn't matter how much you thin, it will still look like a thick wig. I would chock this wig up to the learning curve and use it as a tester for future things you want to try on a wig. Dear Cloud, excellent question! Beginners would do better thinning less at a time - this means smaller teeth and spacing in between. Safer to take 1 cut at time and then another if necessary instead of 1 big cut. Rochelle
