    This is the watch that got me into watches. I saw a picture of it and was immediately struck by how well designed it was. I understood how it worked almost instantly, and the GMT has since become my favorite complication. Unfortunately for this Rolex, it has since been replaced by the Glycine Airman as my grail GMT watch.

    • @theurbangentry

      Thank you BL, what a fantastic watch to get you into watches.
      You gateway watch! The Airman is just as much IMO, maybe not as equally prestigious but I find myself lusitn after the 36mm one all the time. May I ask which one you have?
      Best regards,
      TGV

    • @toolongforyoutoread6
      @toolongforyoutoread6 Před 7 lety +2

      Like you, I've been after the 36mm "No. 1", although I initially intended on getting the 39mm Airman 18 (with a sapphire crystal and a screw down crown). The vintage look of the No.1 just does it for me. Unfortunately a lack of funds has prevented me from getting one as of yet, but I'm hopeful that I might be able to acquire one within the next two years.
      As for the Rolex, I've been able to handle it several times thanks to some wealthy relatives. It truly is something special. Wear it in good health my friend.

    Just watched this, as I got my first GMT watch... a Zenith Elite Dual Time.
    It is incredibly thin, with wonderful sexy curvaceous lugs, and at 38mm it fits great.
    The 2nd time zone hand is changed by a recessed pusher. Not as easy as Rolex, but no worries as I rarely alter it.

    I've been searching also GMT Master 2 Ref. 16710 with Pepsi bezel. Definitely I want that older slimmer elegant case but because I also want it to be everyday watch I don't want to go true vintage. Gladly these "newer" -98 - 2007 models have this vintage look and feeling and yet modern tech. Could you plase tell me what are good places to buy Rolex's Jubilee bracelets online? If I can't find a right watch with Jubilee I would want to buy it separately. Cheers!

    Hey TGV, I've noticed that in almost all of your reviews of luxury watches that you generally mention the same downside: Price. I've been thinking about this point and of course you're right, you're essentially paying thousands of dollars more for only a (relatively) slight increase in quality. However the high price of these watches also add to the experience of a luxury watch, saving up for a new watch and looking forward to it is kind of half the fun in my opinion. So my question to you is, what price do you think is fair for the GMT taking all this into account?

    Hi TGV,
    Great discussion on the iconic Rolex GMT Master II. I enjoy your reviews and candid observations on different watch brands and the industry itself. I especially like your videos with Federico.
    Right now, I am wearing a slight homage to the Rolex GMT Master II in the form of the Loyal Conquer GMT Automatic, which is an Australian brand. It was a gift from my Mother. It has its own unique elements with a beautiful sunburst blue dial and a stainless steel bezel insert and its 300m water resistant. The watch, which only cost $500, has outlasted a TAG Heuer and a Raymond Weil that were each worth $2000. I've worn it swimming, at work and going out to dinner with family or friends and it still works and looks as good as it did the day I received it.
    I can see why a lot of brands release their homage or their own unique version of the Rolex GMT Master II as it is has such an elegant, yet simple, and clean design. It has become an icon and still tops a lot of lists as the best watch for international travellers. I understand why wearing one with either the "Pepsi" or "Coke" bezel with a suit can be somewhat of faux pas, but if you wear the models with the black ceramic bezel (ref. 116710LN or ref. 116713LN) you would be able to pull it off.

    I have the GMT Master 15700 model ( mk1.) with a black bezel. I love this watch, and always keep the bezel to GMT during summer when to my chagrin we move the clocks here in the UK to BST. This watch is very accurate still well within COSC limits even though it is now 20 yrs. old now. As for the increasing value, I was astonished to find that in the 6 yrs I have owned this watch, whereas I could just about afford it then, I could not now, at current prices, it has nearly triple the price I paid originally!.

    Maybe I missed a reference but who makes the band shown at 4:48 in the video? Fell in love with this watch (early GMT-Master) as a kid and ended up buying a new one in 1987 (GMT-Master II 16760 Coke Bezel). Caught bloody hell for an $1800 (at the time) watch purchase but boy has it served me well for 30+ years. Would never sell but certainly might pass down some day. Cheers!

      Off the bat, Yachty all day. I owned the previous ceramic GMT before I owned my sub and I just didn't take to it. Don't get me wrong that "batman" is a wonderful change of bezel, but the yachty has such class and wear so much better for me, it really is no comparison. But of course this is totally IMO, go with your heart and what you would enjoy more! Both solid choices, you can not go wrong either way.

    I own the 16700. Just like you it was my grail and it will be a life long companion, I hope the bezel insert will fade. I agree with all your points but mine has the quick set date function, so that's no problem.
    My GMT Master is from 1991 so the clasp is very dated but I love the bracelet. Also I like how simple Rolex with the blue and red helps you indicate day and night with the bezel.

  • @jonmarklar8228
    @jonmarklar8228 Před 7 lety

    RE the date change...Is that a common problem or trait of watches with a jump hour function? I've got an Omega that functions the same way - you need to move the hour hand forward to change the date. However, before I bought the watch I was also looking at a Reverso with the second timezone on the reverse (a kind of GMT then), and the date could only be changed the same way (no quick set date). If JLC and Rolex don't have a quick set date on watches with a jump hour/independent hour hand function, it makes me think no one does. Is that right?

      Hi Brody, interesting question.
      Sadly I can not help much, I have always lived in Astoria for mostly the last 10 years and a short while in Brooklyn, but the furthest away from the city. So I really could not say. Everyone wants to seem to live in Williamsburg for some reason, you can't get closer then that!
      Happy hunting for a place, cheers.
      Bst regards,
      TGV

    Good morning Gentry. The only negative I have would be the bracelet. It is the one thing that always keeps me away from vintage watches, wish I could get past it. Pepsi and the BLNR are my favorite GMT's. P.S. Not sure how much snow you got in Astoria but on Long Island it looks like 8-12 inch.
    Thanks for the vid.

    Im wearing my 16750 right now. Yes, the Oyster bracelet is a bit of a weak spot if compared to lets say Omega Seamaster/Speedmaster but it looks so good. I have tried on a few other straps (nato) but its just not the same. The beauty of the watch fades a bit without the Oyster bracelet in my opinion.

    I have a 1980 version. The clasp is so thin that I need to bend it to keep the tension on a fairly regular basis. That aside the bracelet wears like butter and the watch has kept perfect time for 37 years without ever having been opened. I have to agree with you about the price of the new ones-not worth the money. Rolex's profit margins must be astronomical! Great video.

    Hey mate, i've got two suggestions of watches you could try that are somewhat "different". There are the Vostok models from russia, some of which are special editions of vintage soviet models, all automatic, crazy value for the price.
    Or else there are the LACO watches from germany, they are retro models inspired by Luftwaffe models, since Laco was the main supplier of the whermacht back in the days. Interesting...

    • @theurbangentry
      @theurbangentry  Před 7 lety +1

      Very good question. Let me say this, when I first bought one last year I paid 850. I sold it a few months later for I think around 1250, I then immediately regretted it so I re -bought it for around the same amount. However, they are not that common due being made in the few thousands and also being are COSC certified with extremely unique 30s design, I would expect to pay $1300 to $1500 and beyond.
      Happy hunting, thank you.

    I believe you can change the date on the GMT Master II in either direction by passing the 12 o'clock position with the hour hand. So if the watch was set to the 2nd and you want to set it to the 29th, rotate the hour hand backwards to reach the 29th (which is way faster than advancing all the way to the 29th).

    Nice video ! It's cool to be honest about your feeling on the price. I think the same, and their price and what they represent is one of the things that make me dislike this brand.
    Here in Paris, most people who buy a rolex don't know anything about watches, they just buy it because it's expensive (and everybody knows it is), so it's a way to show they have money and had success in their life ... it's a status symbol.

  • @jayfalcon22

    This watch has become my new grail watch, I love the colors and functionality. If you purchase a new black bezel insert, couldn't you just switch between pepsi and an all black look like the "sub"? Due to the brand, history, size, durability, value retention and Infinite bezels and straps/bracelets options available for this watch... and especially this model with the drilled lug holes, its perfect IMO. I agree with the "price negative" its too expensive... but so far, if I had to choose one luxury watch, it would be this one. Thank you for the excellent video as always.

    Hi TGV
    Such a classy and wonderful watch - as Rolex watches almost always are.
    Personally I prefer an Omega De Ville GMT, but I guess that's just a question of how you choose to organize a watch collection. I prefer a GMT to be more of a dress watch, all though still with a fairly good water resistance and so on...
    Still, there is no doubt that this stunning Rolex is miles ahead in terms of movement and a lot of other things. And price, not least...
    This brings me to my point here; you could make a video of over-/or underrated watches in a wider perspective, concerning price versus performance/quality. I know that you have already done this within certain price layers. But a video with a very broad perspective on this subject might be a very intertaining idea.
    "Is it safe?" Well, I'm happy that my dentist is not as evil as this. On the other hand; Dustin hardly has to pay this one for his work😂

    U can actually cycle the hour hand backward to set the date. So to change date from 1 to 29, you just cycle backward 2 days! Worse case you only need to cycle through 15 days, hope this help ease the hassle. Dont worry its design for this so u wont damage the movement. My Omega seamaster GMT also work exactly the same way. Enjoy ur GMT, love it!
