    This is such a helpful video. I have only ever really painted fair skinned minis but have wanted to learn dark skin tones the proper way. Now I can finish my Apone and Frost minis for an Aliens MOC.

      @@TheHobbyGrotto Thanks man. I've watched more of your videos and they are very concise and easy to comprehend, more so than other painting channels I've watched. I wish they were around when I first started painting minis in 2016

      Thankyou so much, that means a lot, particularly for a small channel like mine. Concise videos don't always do the best on youtube because the algorithm likes watch time, but I think everyone is timepoor these days so I always try to keep things to the point, so you can get back to painting faster! 😊

    Generally I give a tin wash of Red Gore (old GW paints) to soften the highlights on caucasian flesh, and for darker skins there are some options with either Sephia or Agrax shades.

      Great tips! You can get so many cool variations on skin with glazes and shades like that! A great way to make your individual minis look a bit different from one another too! 😀

    I either do White, Reddened White, or unnatural skin colors, like a pinkish-grey, greenish, or red.
    Speaking of which, I'd love to see a red skin tone tutorial

    Great tips. Do you also thin your washes?

    • @TheHobbyGrotto
      @TheHobbyGrotto  Před 2 lety +1

      Thankyou! 😁 I think the thinning of washes comes down to personal preference. I quite like a more blacklined, shaded look so I use Nuln Oil straight and with a heavier application. But I do find Nuln Oil to already be on the lighter side in comparison to some black washes, particularly in comparison to real oil washes. When I'm adding washes later in the process or glazing, I will thin them though with medium, just to minimise messing things up.

  • @kudosbudo
    @kudosbudo Před 11 měsíci +1

    How thin do you need to make the paint? so how many drops say of skin paint to water or medium? Not sure i;m thinning it enoghh but when i think its right its often too thin or thin and with clumpy bits (thats after shaking teh paints for two minutes and thats with most citadel paints or amy painter and a set of skin tons i got from someone else).

    • @TheHobbyGrotto
      @TheHobbyGrotto  Před 11 měsíci

      It's always hard to say exactly how much thinning is required for paints, because all paints have different levels of thickness, and can be more or less dried out, for example. You want to get it on the wet pallette, and add water slowly with a moist brush until its flowing nicely, kind of like the thickness of milk. You will know if you've added too much water because the pigments will be stretched out and you won't get good coverage, so it's always good to do a test stroke on your hand or thumb to make sure the paint is flowing nicely.
      Also, you want the paint at different levels of thinness for different stages. Basecoats generally you want it more watered down than edge highlights, for example. The vast majority of this is just practice though. The more experienced you get, the more you will be able to just visually see when paint is thinned enough for application. 😊
