Fantastic video that needs a *lot* more views. I've been struggling with making different skin tones work well, so this is an absolute godsend.
Thankyou so much for the lovely words 😊
This is such a helpful video. I have only ever really painted fair skinned minis but have wanted to learn dark skin tones the proper way. Now I can finish my Apone and Frost minis for an Aliens MOC.
Thanks for watching, glad to hear the video will be helpful for your Aliens minis! 😁
@@TheHobbyGrotto Thanks man. I've watched more of your videos and they are very concise and easy to comprehend, more so than other painting channels I've watched. I wish they were around when I first started painting minis in 2016
Thankyou so much, that means a lot, particularly for a small channel like mine. Concise videos don't always do the best on youtube because the algorithm likes watch time, but I think everyone is timepoor these days so I always try to keep things to the point, so you can get back to painting faster! 😊
Generally I give a tin wash of Red Gore (old GW paints) to soften the highlights on caucasian flesh, and for darker skins there are some options with either Sephia or Agrax shades.
Great tips! You can get so many cool variations on skin with glazes and shades like that! A great way to make your individual minis look a bit different from one another too! 😀
I either do White, Reddened White, or unnatural skin colors, like a pinkish-grey, greenish, or red.
Speaking of which, I'd love to see a red skin tone tutorial
I'd definitely like to do more unnatural skin colours! 😁
Thank you! This was so helpful, I've been putting off painting my sister's of battle for months cus I couldn't figure out how to paint pale white skin
That's awesome, thanks for watching and glad it helped! 😀
Awesome tutorial and very appreciated . Well done !
Thankyou for the comment, glad you stopped by! 😄
Man. This is a great tutorial. Really fast and effective.
Thankyou, I like to try and keep them to the point! 😊
Great video, can't wait to test these out!
Cheers, glad you stopped by!
Neat, really clear and simple, also, love the music 🎵
Thankyou my friend, I'm always trying to keep it simple! 😁
Not until the horn is blown to call the kraken 😂
This will be handy for when I eventually do the final fantasy vii miniatures. Thank you!!!
Thankyou! Final Fantasy is awesome! 😀
I’ve always wondered how to do a good-looking dark skin
Awesome, glad to help! 😊
Great video - quick and simple, great results!
Cheers mate, thanks for stopping by 😄
Straight to the point. I like it! Thanks very much for taking the time to make and upload this
Thanks for watching, glad to help! 😊
Just found this. What a wonderful tutorial that is concise with very good examples. Thank you so much
Thankyou for watching! 😊
Thank you soooo much for this Video! I will use this on my Bullgryn...Orgyns made out of Warhammerfantasy Ogre Bulls... and Some Deathwatch Weopon Bits....Catachan Jungle Warriors for the win!
Thats awesome! Love some Ogryns! I actually have a Catachan army from back in the day, was based on the Gaunt's Ghosts novels! 😁
@@TheHobbyGrotto Well of course they are awesome! TO THA CHOPPAAAHHH!!!
Haha I also like the way GW still sells them! 🤣
@@TheHobbyGrotto Epic sculpts!
Thanks for this! I find it very difficult to paint any other shade than Cadian Fleshtone-ish. Tried going both ligther and darker with less than great results :P Will try out the dark skin recipe on some of my Marauders.
No worries 😄 Cadian Fleshtone is my often used default, though sometimes I like to mix a bit of pink or brown in the basecoat to get a bit more variation.
Awesome looking skin tones!
Thankyou! Hopefully they helped with your painting! 😊
@@TheHobbyGrotto Absolutely!

Thankyou! 😊
Really great content you're doing! I believe you'll really see growth with this quality of videos and tips, very digestible and informative stuff👍
Thankyou for the lovely comment and for supporting the channel 😁 I'm always trying to find ways to make my tutorials more efficient, so there is definitely more coming!
Great tutorial! Would you consider making one for hair? especially red hair as this one gives me quite a headache
Thankyou! I've definitely thought about doing a tutorial on prominent hair colours before, I'll have to look into it more so stay tuned! 😁
ok thanks a lot , very interesting
Glad to hear! 😁

Great tips. Do you also thin your washes?
Thankyou! 😁 I think the thinning of washes comes down to personal preference. I quite like a more blacklined, shaded look so I use Nuln Oil straight and with a heavier application. But I do find Nuln Oil to already be on the lighter side in comparison to some black washes, particularly in comparison to real oil washes. When I'm adding washes later in the process or glazing, I will thin them though with medium, just to minimise messing things up.
How thin do you need to make the paint? so how many drops say of skin paint to water or medium? Not sure i;m thinning it enoghh but when i think its right its often too thin or thin and with clumpy bits (thats after shaking teh paints for two minutes and thats with most citadel paints or amy painter and a set of skin tons i got from someone else).
It's always hard to say exactly how much thinning is required for paints, because all paints have different levels of thickness, and can be more or less dried out, for example. You want to get it on the wet pallette, and add water slowly with a moist brush until its flowing nicely, kind of like the thickness of milk. You will know if you've added too much water because the pigments will be stretched out and you won't get good coverage, so it's always good to do a test stroke on your hand or thumb to make sure the paint is flowing nicely.
Also, you want the paint at different levels of thinness for different stages. Basecoats generally you want it more watered down than edge highlights, for example. The vast majority of this is just practice though. The more experienced you get, the more you will be able to just visually see when paint is thinned enough for application. 😊
