- Have you ever heard of Hum Bug? It's a VW-powered kit car that was made originally in Berkeley, CA, in 1969, then later in Alameda. The British made them the Beaujangle. The chassis is shortened between the pedals and the frame head.
The owner, Dave Meurs, gave us a ride with this unique ride.

@@seinsc7913 that stinks .maybe a ride in it if youre ever in Myrtle Beach sc..iv got a monster mustang called Frankenstein if i can ever get younger and go out and make it a terror again .i hoping for my third wind ..lol..love the old buggers..i might even rat rod a 76 bug here at the shop not sure but i relly really want to .the engines are awesome..id go really really Frankenstein with the motor . whatever could be done to it .im not sure yet bore stoke head work .etc and ya kniw try and get as much without blowing it up .im sure therss sone ol tricks out there .just great motors i think .snappy little fun cars .love to see the humbugger soneday . get out there!! because we wont be able to soon very soon .like next week or so it will feel like .lol good luck friend

I have owned one of these for over 30 years here in the UK ill have to post some videos up , certainly has inspired me to get it up and running again , the guys smiling says it all ! Just to add my Beaujangle Can Am has a detachable hardtop with gullwing doors

I once bought some engine parts from a guy somewhere between Mansfield and Sheffield in the U.K. (I think) who had a yellow one, tbh it looked naff he had spoiled it with big modern wheels and bling. That one on your vid is rad though, rough and ready just how I like it. When I bought my buggy it came on tatty 4 lug sprintstars I wish I had kept them. 🤨that motor sounds crisp 👌

I always thought the ultimate bug based kit car would have a body like an old McLaren race car. This is close. Wish I had this car.
I used to get all the VW and kit car magazines and brochures back in the 70s/80s and I clearly remember a few kits that resembled Mclarens, GT 40s, Porsches, etc.
Imagine this body recreated in carbon fiber and sold to the modern day race car enthusiast

Acho que o modelo perfeito seria uma 356 speedster em fibra de carbono com motor Boxer 2.0 injetada com fueltech e freios a disco ventilado nas 4 rodas ....
A fueltech embora seja brasileira a sede fica aí nos estudos unidos, aqui no Brasil e a fábrica....
Fiquei sabendo que na Califórnia tem algumas Chamonix 550 & 356 speedster talvez você consiga alguma em um preço mais interessante do que ter que importar uma usada ou zero quilômetro de fabrica...
O bom é que se você tiver dinheiro pode encomendar uma do jeito que você quiser zerada....
Só tem que pesquisar na internet pra achar o site....
E se possível ir na fábrica escolher pessoalmente cada detalhe do carro....

I would play with it with a bunch of old bed sheets beforehand but if I bought it anyway.Which is unlikely as it personally isn't my thing even though I just love cars in general.
It would come off and get a seal coat just to avoid the cactus touch everytime I got near it.

Yes definitely. It was a long block i found in a shed.
I added a full flow exhaust. 010 distributor and weber progressive carburetor.
I haven't taken the heads off or split the case.
I have a very low budget and trying to make the most out of what I have. In a short period of time

They designed this body, so your precision masterpiece of a power plant, can drop a valve from overheating in 1000 miles….nice.
The VW service instructions where a top end overhaul ( new guides and valves ) at 70 K miles.
Then complete engine replacement past 100 K
They only overheat through negligence , loose fan belt , incorrectly set timing or perished inlet manifold rubber boots causing air leaks and therefore leaned out fuel mixture .
They only drop valves when the valve guide becomes worn enough to not transmit heat away from the valve through the guide then cylinder head .
If correct VW service instructions are followed , this doesn't happen period .

The beetle body, and the seal, between top and bottom….is part of the engine. It’s part of the design. Part of the system.
It’s so the fan doesn’t ingest hot air, and blow it on the cylinders.

I have a couple of other builds, but haven’t posted them due to section 230.
I build 53 horsepower engines. As close as I can to book specs, trying to use As many original parts as I can.
I would never attempt 200 horsepower.
I’m not a pro, I don’t have $$$$ and I don’t do this as my job.
I have however had VWs since, I first learned to drive. Because it was all I could afford.
IMO, there is channel after channel that builds these cars with huge engines, super brakes, and the like. And that’s great. But not for me.
But gone, is the quaintness of drum brakes, and 53 hp. And the entirety of the car how it functioned as stock.
Nobody understands how wonderful there cars were. Because now they are all distorted versions.
I just went and visited my bro in Michigan before the snow fell. Took the 69.
3000 miles. Stone stock.
And no one anywhere does that anymore.

I put a bigger wheel in it. The problem was. It made it hard to get in and out of the car.
Unfortunately, the Federal Exhaust Gas Fun Ban Ordinance (BABVVO) and Transport Tourism Emission Restriction Federal Ordinance (TEBBVO) will soon ban driving combustion engines in public outside of proven commuter trips and transport trips, because then exhaust gas fun WILL be a traffic offense!!!!!! Furthermore, a vehicle tax of 30,000 euros for exhaust gas-emitting combustion engines was threatened!!!!!!!!

This one is very different though,if you notice they are sitting where the rear seat frame would normally fit and the chassis has been shortened in front of the napoleon hat. Don't see that on too many kit cars based on VW pans.
