Dirty Dog Outlaws Ep1 - In this episode I travel to Phillip Island, home of startup kit car brand Dirty Dog Outlaws that have been making their Porsche 356 inspired Outlaw Speedster since 2022. Using either an MGF or Toyota MR2 as it's base, kits are now sold throughout the world. And there's more to come from this wild new island venture so watch this space.
Twice weekly visits to classic auto workshops featuring cars from the veteran to RADwood eras & including car restoration, rebuilds, repairs and restomods to anything from Aussie V8s, American muscle cars, Euro exotics, JDM, your coveted everyday runabout and more. If it's built before 1999, there's every chance I'll film it.
My name is Dave and I simply l love old cars and visiting workshops to chat to the people working on them. Added to that, I devour car content on youtube so I thought I'd join in and make some myself.

I'm 64 years old and I have always wanted a 356 Porsche but I shelved that idea many years ago because of the expense. My dreams may have just been answered! Tim appears to be a good, passionate and resourceful man! I loved every bit of this video!

yup., you're right not easy to finish the old kits, I got a Jaguar E type with body on but everything else had to be hooked up and working, it's easy to get disillusioned 1 guy doing it all. so good job to you for knowing that and trying to make it better.

"We actually worked" priceless. The road to success with kit cars (actually any kit, models included) is to have everything and I mean everything included as this man has done. When you finish the car there should be nothing left in the bottom of the crate, a true indicator that you have done a good job.

Engineering diagrams before CAD. Good job. I am an engineer. Sometimes i still print the CAD designs life size to verify the robots and computers are still making the parts accurately.

I can really relate to this guy, I too have a Champagne taste on a Beer budget! I used to get stick at school for reading books about 60's exotic european racecars in the Library "Oh, you're never gonna afford one of those!" But that wasn't the point at all to me. Even if I get the privilege to even WORK on one, I will be perfectly happy. Btw I am still kicking myself about passing up the $10000 '65 911T in the Quokka (our version of the trading post classifieds in WA) about 20 years ago!

At 62 I've only been dreaming about a 356 for decades and now that I've got all of my disabilities kicking off I thought I would never be able to get one. Dirty Dog just sparked my dreams back up. Now I just need to figure out what a MGF is and if I can find one here in the US. One other thing, can I do a left hand drive or do I need to learn how to drive from the Ausie side of the car?😂
You need to watch all of the video Glenn. Tim mentions American customers can have their car sitting on a Toyota MR two spider platform, the later one SW 30 I think he says. Get on his website which is linked in the description and give him a call.
We had them in continental europe with left hand drive. Dont know if it was imported to the US.
Hey there. Liked and subscribed from Canada! I'm drooling right now! I've always found the 356 to be such a gorgeous body style--one of the best and most iconic ever. I think that's why my 2010 Audi TTS appeals to me so much, because they have a similar shape. Anyway, you've taken something good and made it so much better! (Wider was definitely the way to go.) I thought the blue one was so beautiful, and then you showed the red one and that colour took my breath away. You guys are artists---no two ways about it! There is a company in Texas that uses the old 356 body kits and powers them with high horsepower EV motors. (They are quiet and very fast.) With gas being so expensive here, that would be the best of both worlds. Keep up the good work boys!

I'm just wondering if you could use a 1994 bmw 318is coupe as the donor car?
I have one that need's a painjob & a little pannel work, but looking at how the car sit's i'm thinking it would possibly work out. Any help &/or advice would be great as i am looking for a new project to tackle.

Afraid not mate. The engine is too high on the 3 series … not to mention at the wrong end of the car.
Isn’t an is worth keeping anyway though? I’ve seen decent ones go from a couple of grand pre Covid to upwards of 5 even 7 of late.

Dave thanks for the video. You may notice the icon for my name. Yes I am a true MGF (and also a TF) owner. I have had an MGF for nearly 20 years and 200K plus on the car. Go for the MGTF and get the Mike Satur suspension kit. At 78 years old I don't think I could build one of these cars. But I would love to get one and take it to the MG club meeting. I would really stir some club members up. Now where is that link to Dirty Dog?

They never made a left hooker but the kit can be made to fit an SW30 MR2 Spyder. Keep watching the video, it’s explained in there IIRC.

Thank you for commenting. Believe me there are some absolute beauties I’ve filmed that I’d love to go out for a spin in but it’s not really the MO of this channel. All the shops I visit are super busy and I’m thankful they give me the time to show me about. I’m sure in some cases, if I asked, they’d gladly take me round the block but time is money and though it’s probably to the detriment of the channel, I’m loathe to ask. Hope you understand.

Is this car built on a shortened beetle chassis? In the 1980s or 90s, there was a company in Brazil making authentic replica 356 cars with the blessing of Porsche bosses who ordered the provision of the original drawings to the Brazilians. From memory, these Brazilian made replicas were made of metal.

The Porsche’s a longitudinal mounted air cooled flat 4, while the MGF is a transverse in-line 4, so that must make it a real hassle to swap the motor over.

After all what’s the point of looking like a early Porsche if it hasn’t got any of the essential character & reliability that comes with the air cooled flat 4? Otherwise may as well spend less money just buying a VW Type 3, that was an original Porsche design.

This is his way and in the time he's been in business, or up until the time I filmed with him a couple of months back, 18 people have bought into his theory. Look after your K series and it'll look after you.
@@davesclassicgaragetours I just think a air cooled flat 4 is intrinsic to the character of such a car. I’ve got nothing against the MGF, expecially the Hydrogas suspension, I hope they are keeping that system. The MGF was a great car that should’ve done much better than it did. He’s right, if owners kept up with the maintenance procedures they were quite reliable.
@@mickvonbornemann3824 the original Porsche engine will you back 40 grand and you get a powerplant that lasts 50,000 miles max . The idea of replicas is to get the look and ambience without 80 year old technology .
I always thought that building a Spyder 550 a great donor car would be a Porsche Boxer.
Boxster. Yes my first thought but difficult to pick up a donor for under 10k. Also (arguably) you may as well spend about the same and restore the Boxster..

@@davesclassicgaragetours I agree, the early ones are under $20K, dig deep and you probably find one for under $15K but its a Porsche, if you had a stick on body wrap, surly the exercise would be under $40K.
There is a guy in Kipparing ,Brisbane Northside who builds 550 Spiders . His are at the $$$$$ end of the scale .
I'm familiar with the Toyota MR2. But what is an MGF? I'm in Texas.
The MGF was built by MG Rover in the 90s. It’s a mid engined two seater roadster that competed with the Miata.

Nice, very nice but why the done to death 356? The beautiful post WWII coupes (Jaguar?) are neglected and are FERWD so just about anything could be built from one of those. Anyway, good luck, hope this works out for you.

Purists & restorers should LOVE you guys, for providing people who want to customise or hot rod these kind of cars with options that mean they don't have to cut up, butcher, & devalue examples of the real thing to have what they want. Restorers & collectors can concentrate on preserving the remaining examples of the genuine articles, while those who want to have fun and get creative with that style of car, can indulge their creative urges without committing automotive blasphemy and upsetting devotees of the real thing. You guys help to keep everyone happy, AND preserve the limited stocks of valuable, sought after collector cars. If anything, you're providing an admirable, valuable service to the entire auto industry, for which you should be appreciated, celebrated, encouraged, & supported. How many more genuine Porsches would have been sacrificed to building wildly customised & modified versions, if people didn't have the option of using reproductions like yours for that sort of purpose? Anyone who doesn't give you guys proper credit for what you do, is a mental midget that just doesn't get it. Well done guys! Geez, if I had the spare cash, I'd buy one of yours, but I'd engineer it with the VW Flat Four because it's basically a detuned Porsche motor anyway, and I'd build it as close to a genuine, original 356 as possible, basically allowing me to own a "356" that almost no one could easily distinguish from a real one, which I could otherwise never afford.

@@aaronhopkins6697 The Outlaw Speedster is essentially a bodyswap for either an MGF or MR2 Sw30. If it could, I'd imagine there'd be some fab work needed but that's a question for Tim. Email him from the link in. the description and make sure you mention where you saw the his car first.
