I've never played a Shiren game, but I'm so starved for Pokemon Mystery Dungeon that I'll take anything. Maybe I'll try this one out!
There is a previous game in this series that is also currently on Switch if you want to try it out. It's been out for a bit so maybe you can find it on sale sometime. It's Shiren the Wanderer: The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate.
If you have the chance before February, I'd recommend either checking out Shiren 1(DS remake) or emulating Shiren 2(N64) and applying the translation patch, as both serve as good introductions to the series.

I wholeheartedly recommend Chocobo's Mystery Dungeon on Switch! One of my top favorite games of that type.
This series has been low key the best roguelike for almost 30 years.
Agreed. And if we're being specific. That may be in part that it's ae it's a "rouge". Not rougelike or lite.
No punches are pulled it's brutally and at times unfairly random. At least the early ones and seemingly this new one. I've only played Shiren the Wanderer on DS. Which I believe is a remake of Shiren the Wanderer 2.
Been meaning to play more of the series so the announcement is neat.
@@Daydreamer7070 The DS Shiren (the only one to be released in English, at least) is a remake of the Super Famicom Shiren, but it had some design changes that make it slightly less fun, in my book at least. It's still worth playing though.

@Mysticgamer the Wii game is a standalone title. It's not a remake. If you're asking about its quality, fans often say Shiren 3 is the worst game in the series for causalising it to a fault and focusing too much on story rather than gameplay
The last game in the series had a LOT of depth and new mechanics, and was also REALLY freaking hard (I got to the second final boss and he flattened me), so I don’t mind a “back to basics” entry with no Night Mode and the like. Stoked for a new entry in general!!

Is this the same dev team that did the Mystery Dungeon that Pokemon did a spin off for?
Yes, Shiren the wanderer games are developed by Spike Chunsoft, who indeed did all the pokemon mystery dungeons games as well.
@@NyxTheScary It's the same dev that made most of the Mystery Dungeon games, including the *six* Pokemon versions, and that's only if you lump together all the versions of Rescue Team and Explorers. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon is, by far, the best-selling of the Mystery Dungeon games, none of them have sold less than a million copies.

I still have my old copy of Shiren the Wanderer, Legend of the Golden Condor for DS. Fantastic game series.
Considering most here in the west have never even heard of this series, a back to basics approach seems like the smart move to grab a new market while keeping the appeal for veterans.
It looks great, but as a longtime fan, I will surely miss the phenomenal sprite work.
I like the art style here, but that's also valid af. Shiren 4/5 especially looked so good

Wow, I'm surprised this is getting a western release. Mystery Dungeon games other than the Pokemon ones are hardly ever talked about.
Mystery Dungeon is the OG roguelike series, for those who don't know. Chunsoft (now Spike Chunsoft) has been churning these out for various series for over 30 years now. Shiren the Wanderer is the longest running of these series from what I can find, although nearly all of them have been Japan exclusive.

A Rougelike that is actually like Rogue.
Mystery dungeons feel like the only hope for console roguelikes that actually stick to Rogue's formula.
Ever since I played the First pokemon mystery dungeon game I've wanted to play others mystery dungeon games but never gotten around to doing so. May have to give this a go.
Shiren is my favorite roguelike series; I have every game that's been released stateside (the latest game I have on both Vita and Switch). Can't wait to dig into this one.
Just saw a spate of videos pop up about “oh no Roguelikes are in trouble”, and lookee here one of the OG’s dropping a new release next year. Plus there’s this lil thing called Hades 2 on the horizon. And that’s aside from the fact that trends come and go-doesn’t mean Roguelikes are going the way of the dinosaur altogether if they just fall out of fashion a bit.
In the past, people have said CRPGs, JRPGs, RTSes, FPSes, fighting games and adventure games have all been dead. People will make more eventually. No one is forbidding people from making more roguelikes.

Well a remaster or sequel of Izuna the Unemployed Ninja has been recently announced and it was totally unexpected! So who knows…
I still have trauma from how hard Dice of Fate (PS Vita) was, I had to give up around the point where the "night time" mechanic starts. Shoutout to anybody who was on the gamefaqs forums back in those days. A shame to lose the beautiful pixel art, but perhaps this will attract new players to the series now that it's on a more popular platform.
I STILL play the original game to this day!!! One wrong move and you’re sent back to the beginning again. It was such an interesting game. It had a similar concept to the original Pokémon mystery dungeon game. I think a lot of people will like it with these new designs ❤️

Not sure why a western release wasn't in the last direct since there was a trailer for the game in the Japanese direct, but I'm stoked for this game! It's been over a decade since a new Shiren entry.
I can probably guess that Spike Chunsoft wasn’t ready for a trailer yet.
I hope the physical edition is not with limited run games and more widely available everywhere.
My most played switch game is Tangledeep, really big fan of these kinds of games. Looking forward to this even though I prefer pixel art for this style but I'm sure others are happy with this direction.
This is excellent news. Big fan of Shiren and big fan of Mystery Dungeon games. They’re so cozy for me. Even thought they can be challenging there is just something special about them.
I only played the Shiren 1 DS remake, but it became one of my all-time favorite RPGs.
Not sure if we might get anything Pokémon Mystery Dungeon related yet, but at least Spike Chunsoft finally released something for Shiren after all these years.

Serpentcoil Island seems like it'll be great, but if you want to get started right away, here's some other suggestions:
- _Tower of Fortune and Dice of Fate_ (on Steam/Switch/PSVita) i.e. _Shiren 5_ is officially in English and the latest release in the series.
- _Shiren the Wanderer_ (on DS, it's a remake of the 1st Shiren game on SNES) i.e. _Shiren 1_ . I started on this one, it's simple and elegant, also officially released in English.
- _Shiren 2_ (on N64) I hear is an awesome pick as well, Japan-only release, but there's a full fan translation patch you can download.
If you like bashing your head against a brick wall slowly improving, then definitely give it a shot.If you aren't a fan of losing then it may not be your cup of tea. The Shiren series is the definition of trial and error, and the story isn't that crazy so you definitely play for the gameplay.
Id recommend it a ton as a big fan, but ye be warned of the difficulty

I hope the game controlls similarly to rescue team DX since the cutscenes and the ability to have arrows/staves bound to a ZL shortcut look really similar to it :)

@@MrSerpico145 All Mystery Dungeon is out of Spike Chunsoft, with the exception of the Chocobo games which are developed by Square Enix, so yes. While Shiren 6 probably uses a new engine(I say mostly since this game aimed to hit 60FPS and the DX engine was uh... unstable.) controls will likely be similar yeah
Plus, the item shortcuts are also just a great QoL lol, there's a lot of new QoL features and I think that's dope.
I played 200 hours of Shiren on Switch already 😅

Looks neat and it'd be nice to dive into a Mystery Dungeon without a literal death god following me around.
As a lifelong fan of the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games (Explorers of Sky is my favourite game of all time), I might pick this up and give it a go to scratch that itch.
I'd highly recommend Shiren as a series. It's a tad bit more punishing than PMD but still an amazing series of roguelikes

Yep. And while the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games are okay, I think the Shiren games are rather better, especially the Super Famicom one.
They're actually part of the franchise and made by the same devs.
It's like the Musou/Warriors games, that has their original series (Dynasty Warriors/Sangoku Musou) but also have collabs with different IPs like Hyrule Warriors and Fire Emblem Warriors.
highly recommend trying torneko or any shiren game if you have only played the pokemon mystery dungeon stuff. I love shiren tower of fortune and dice of fate.

I played the original version on the snes way back in my childhood. It’s fun unique and nonstop engaging. It’s like The binding of Isaac meets Spelunky, I’m glad Shiren is getting all the attention it deserves though all these years.

i didn't get to play the DS games of the series
and i know the last shiren game for the switch was
shiren the wanderer - the tower of fortune & the dice of fate
i think it was on Cartridge but didn't get the chance to get it so i got the downloaded version
on the Eshop for $15
anyways i gotta jump back into playing that game if i plan to get the new 1.

NEAT! Ive only played Shiren the Wanderer on yhe Ds. Which i belive us a port of Shiren the Wanderer 2. And I was quickley a fan.

IIRC, the DS game is a port of the first Shiren game, but that one was the second Mystery Dungeon.
The very first one was a Dragon Quest spin-off, and it explains why a lot of Shiren monsters look like DQ expies (Slimes to Mamels, and so on...)
