I'm kind of convinced because it would give Roman more of a reason to hate Janus.
Also, it would make sense to as why Roman feels so used by Janus.
It's a good theory
Wait didn’t Roman feel used because Janus masqueraded as Patton, and, as he put it, manipulated his love of theater and getting what he wants?
he felt used because janus manipulated him. twice lol.
Now that romance is becoming a plot line again, it would be interesting if someone brought up something that they learned about relationships from Moving On and Roman seemed confused about it.
or just straight up says he doesnt remeber going there sure it would be weird but it would be massive payoff
This makes so much sense! In addition, I noticed that Roman had a lack of reaction to Thomas saying he was thinking about Guys and Dolls, even though he is Thomas's romantic side. It would make more sense for him to have a heartbroken or at least more shocking reaction to being reminded of it. Roman would most likely contribute a big deal to Thomas thinking about Guys and Dolls, so it would make sense for him to not want to appear in the video at all, giving Janus a great opportunity to pop in instead.
you’re absolutely right about that. He should have been hurt but it didn’t seem like he cared. good catch!
@@PickYourPoison Okay and I'm very late to the party but also I feel like as the side that LOVES theater he would be making all the references to Guys and Dolls maybe even sing a song or two? Because in The dark Side of Disney he took every chance he could to reference Mary Poppins
here is an idea when roman feels sad he doesn't show up like in the negative thinking espode when we hear him but not see him and it is implid that he is a bit bruised which is followed up by thomas feeling down so with thomas feel heart broken that is possible why it would out of character for roman to show up or at least not be as happy especally since thomas feels heart broken
Yes, but that doesn't explain how Roman rose normally in the episode, as opposed to Logan rising haphazardly.
I think my favourite part is the fact that hanging out with Remus is what would make disguised Janus talk about butts for too long.
19:50 also, Roman said he “had to rhyme it” which reminds me of when Janus said “calling Thomas sanders to the stand-ers, nailed that”
Wow-
I never thought about that-
Another time that Janus disguised as someone was in ‘A new year of lying to myself’
He was probably Virgil sense in ‘can lying be good’ Virgil said “But Thomas lying would make me just as uneasy”
Meaning he wouldn’t want Thomas to lie to Himself
That was the point Virgil didn't want Thomas to lie to himself that's why Virgil didn't want him to make a resalushon
@@theembercollective9640 *resolution
*since
Also anxiety was still on the dark sidw and moody and sinked in and out of the video about new years resolution.
that was disproven sadly
To tie in with 17:54 , That scene REALLY reminds me of this one:
"Well, when is it enough?!"
"...Trees?"
Another thought what if Remus was Roman during the Christmas episode. He was intrusive.
We were actually looking at that at one point while discussing this video. The only problem is we don't know if Remus even has that ability, so we discounted it until further notice.
@@PickYourPoison Hmmm, you have an excellent sides can shapeshift but only Janus can shapeshift into othersides
Yeah, we literally don’t know if they can because only Janus has ever tried. It’s up in the air but very possible
@@PickYourPoison My theory about that is that Remus was speaking through Roman. Its happened before with Virgil and Patton speaking through Tomas, just as Janus spoke for Virgil here I don't see why Remus wouldn't be able to if others are able to aswell
@@3RR0R.404 especially if virgil could do it. now, patton may seem like the outlier outta those, but personally i feel like patton is one of the most powerful sides bc of the creativities being split (which had to have been bc of him, conscious decision or not, considering they split bc thomas' morality said that some creativity is good and some bad) as well as the lilypadton outlash in svsr. we also know that virgil is the least powerful dark side. i feel like if virgil could, any of them could.
Another thing: The theatre masks behind Roman. Like, sure. Theater, masks, stuff like that. BUT! Those are the JANUS-MASKS. That's where that originates from. The tragedy and the comedy, symbolized as masks, just like (god) Janus' double-faced masks. The symbol literally comes from the same guy Janus has his name from. And those in gold, both of them? Like, not the authentic white and black? Roman's views are pretty black-and-white, and Roman is one for authentic representation of theater. In fancy, sure, but such details… I feel like he'd at least have one silver and one gold masks, which would be the next best thing. But no. Just gold. Yellow-ish gold.
Just saying…
Also - the golden apple, as mentioned in the video - golden masks, golden apple, yellow snake... King's crown???
I’ve noticed something about the time “roman” tried to convince Thomas to lie, something about the scene and the scenes thereafter were familiar. So for this let’s assume Janus is disguised as Roman. So Janus tries to convince Thomas to lie to get something he believes will help Thomas, Thomas objects saying he doesn’t want to lie to someone he cares about, Janus then goes on a lengthy rant spilling the piping hot tea and exposing what Thomas really wants. Where have we seen this sequence of events before? Selfishness v. Selflessness. If you think about it the scene here is almost like a shorter version of what happened in SvS. I would also like to point out that Janus becomes increasingly animated and exited whenever he continues his arguments and gets closer to his goals.
If this theory is true I applaud Thomas for acting like Janus acting like Roman.
He also drags on the s's like a snake or deceit. One example is at 3:54.
Good catch!!
Thanks
the only hole I can find is that fact is if Janus didn't know about the outfit change then roman would have been in the completely wrong outfit when the video began and they would of realised very fast.
that’s absolutely true
...What if Janus... influenced Roman somehow... I don't know if it would be a hypnosis thing or possession thing? Because I really don't think this is Roman - or at least not Roman with complete control of himself...
@Maybe Mayoi made the case for Roman being too upset to even want to pop up here... He's skipped episodes because of being upset before, as seen in My Negative Thinking, and we know that, at least in some circumstances, Janus can change clothes rather quickly... What if Janus saw Roman and, either very quickly or with reluctant permission from Roman, saw enough to copy his clothes based on Roman's clothes (especially considering he wouldn't need to remember it for long). This could potentially explain all of the strange events of the episode...
Well Romans outfit was in Pattons and we don’t have proof of the other sides outfits being there so maybe he stole Romans current outfit because he couldn’t find the other one because it was in Pattons room.
@@janustheidiot2247 that's a great point!
@@floofyconfusednerd3436 Like the hypnotic snake Kaa in the Jungle Book?
10:20 heres virgil is covering his mouth while 'roman' is freaking out
Yes I think he(Virgil) figured it out at this point.
@@xx_yumegacha_xx854And Janus knew Virgil figured it out so he shut him up. But he knew no one else would see that as odd since their thought is: “He’s panicking.”
And after keeping Virgil silent long enough and making look like Roman more since he knew Virgil was convinced again, he released him.
im pretty sure he covered his mouth because thomas said "he was loud!" which refers to his "demon voice" that happens when he's really anxious. if youll notice, he does not talk verbally when that happens. (if he can help it) which i think is likely because he does not want to startle thomas with his voice and make him anxious as well. i believe that, because this is not the only instance that he does it. he covers his mouth pretty much everytime he accidentally blurts something out.
“Rem- Roman is creativity”
Me: *crying*
I also want to point out that in the episode with the side Christmas carol Roman says "Imagine sugar plumes and not your naked aunt pattie" and when asked why he would say that he claims he doesn't know where it came from, in my theory I feel like that was Remus speaking through Roman
I read it as "Janus is disgusted by Roman" 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
that too
he is
I think it's really interesting because the sides know Janus as Deceit, but really the main functions that we see him fulfilling are Self Preservation as a whole and Denial, which is functionally a means of psychological/emotional self-preservation. Dee has more control over the other sides than maybe even Patton, because he's most in touch with Thomas' subconcious needs and wants, so to have those needs/wants met, he can stop the other sides. And clearly denial is a powerful thing- if Thomas doesn't want to know something, conciously or not, then Janus can stop him from knowing it, or at least keep him from actively acknowledging it, which really ties in with this episode- Thomas is lying to himself about this relationship.
Side note they mentioned this at the end but has anybody noticed that Janus tends to shut Logan up whenever possible? This episode, he leaves, the trial he's "benched," SVS Redux he gets hijacked by Deceit. And Logan seems to have the most power over the Dark Sides in return- he was practically the hero of DWIT, he's calmed Virgil down from his panic multiple times, and Dee quiets him whenever possible, possibly in a preemptive effort to avoid Logan's power over him.
at 1:55 id also like to add that roman said "those were busy times for me" right after virgil said that was the time thomas was trying to convince himself he was straight.. like he was busy deceiving thomas into thinking he was straight
3:54 the "ssssssso embarrassing." mr. snake boy
As another little neat thing- look at the picture behind Thomas at 12:18. It's a Thomas wearing what appears to be yellow gloves, just like Janus. Like, during the most climatic part of 'Roman's' argument. This is the first video of yours that I've watched and I really love this!! Definitely subscribed!
oh wow we didn’t catch that one. That’s awesome. Thank you!
@@PickYourPoison plus at 11:19 when thomas says "i am NOT gonna lie to him!!" look at the photo in the back. it's only the right side of his face... the human side of janus'. just another lil thing :)
Especially since he says "That's a side of me i don't want to tap into"
He’s also wearing a hat and showing the right side of his face in that one!
17:55 "your uncle?" "obviously not" "clarity never hurt" reminds me of "when is it enough" "trees...?" like. he's missing the obvious answer and latching onto a minor detail just like when Janus asked about the trees.
When black and yellow are your school colors
Your school is a Hufflepuff!
Or the more or less complete opposite: Janus!
😂
One thing I did notice was , when Thomas called his ex when Virgil tried to contribute his hand would cover his mouth like what Janus did to Logan during the episode ‘can lying be good’ I only noticed it when I was watching this because I tend to go on full search mode.
Just wanted to say that , btw I love your videos ❤️
thank you so much! And yeah that was another thing that was odd about the episode. Good catch!
@@PickYourPoison it’s ok, glad you took time out of your day to read mean observation.
19:19 ALSO when he says eccentricities, it sounds like he’s stuttering because hes trying to think of a fancy word that Roman would say.
This is great theory and it's great to watch.
I have a theory about after watching this:
I think that Roman was controlled by Janus, not dressed up as him for the episode.
Because when Janus was Patton, he showed up and acted differently and when Logan was almost going to say Deceit, Patton flicked his wrist causing Logan to covered his mouth. We don't see that when Virgil lied.
Also Roman came up the same way as he always do in the beginning of the episode.
I have two theories of how Janus controlled Roman:
1. Mind control
2. A snake bite
Yeah that’s another possibility. Glad you enjoyed!
@@PickYourPoison
It could have happened.
it might have been what happened. That way the other sides wouldn’t have suspected Janus being there
Another thing that I remembered in the episode, when Logan left, Roman corrected the number that Logan said. This also happened in Janus' name reveal, except it was Janus who corrected Roman that time. Roman got upset at that like Logan.
I can't put into words how happy I am that I found this channel.
The editing is great.
It presents strong arguments.
You can see the effort and dedication put into each video.
Not to mention how they look having so much fun!
Seriously, I loved it
1+ sub ❤
That means a whole lot
virgil is also having very much of an anxiety attack here, and we know he freaks out around janus, even if he's not sure he is janus
i don't quite know. i think he's slipping out of character, whether it be because it was janus or because he's not getting what he wants.
I mean yeah, that is the more likely thing considering the situation. Obviously it’s probably not Janus since still nothing has been confirmed or even suspected in this episode, but it was a fun video to make regardless!
Idk if anyone else caught it, but it seemed at the very end of the christmas episode, Remus temporarily took control of Roman. I dont remember the exact line, but it was something about "naked aunt patty"
I very recently joined this fandom and I must say your videos are brilliant!
Anyway, I definitely noticed myself that Roman wasn’t acting like himself at times and I wondered wether it was a writing/acting/directing mistake somehow, but it felt off since the videos and characters are always so thought through
So Janus actually impersonated all the light sides! I love your videos, they blow my mind every time! Please continue making this great content!
thank you so much!!!!
I WAS JUST THINKING ABOUT THIS !!! This video is amazing !!!
So like, if Janus tried to be Virgil would he accidentally wear the old hoodie and get busted immediately?
no, he was in episodes with virgil after the outfit change so he knows already
@@PickYourPoison Okay, another thing I thought was neat. The detail with the Guys and Dolls playbill was great. I had another thought though. In his first appearance when Deceit does the musical puns based around himself he includes, "Lies and Dolls" that could've been a hint about Deceit possibly impersonating Roman in this video.
17:58 they say it’s such a Remus thing... the photo in the background is literally Thomas with a moustache
So what you’re saying is that my favorite character might have been my other favorite character in disguise? I love this
“Roman’s not the **WOO BUTTONS** kinda guy.”
I love this 😂😂
And Janus disguising as Roman during this episode is honestly perfect since the sides and Thomas wouldn’t notice because Thomas is dealing with a breakup. So, his romantic side would be acting up.
16:00; Actually, *Logan* is the only established right-handed side. In Selfishness vs. Selflessness (14:43), Logan explicitly says: "I am the director of activities for Thomas's right arm." Janus questions: "Just the right?" and Logan replies with "The left arm is managed by Roman." But other than that, everything's accurate and well thought out. Loved the video! :)
Logan does manage *Thomas’* right arm, but he himself is left handed. You can see this at 9:20 of Why Do We Get Out of Bed in the Morning, for example, where Logan writes with his left hand. If you look at 9:59 in the 12 days of Christmas video, Roman writes with his right hand. HOWEVER he prefers to draw with his left hand it seems. Glad you enjoyed :))
@@PickYourPoisonou guys are both right & wrong! Roman is canonically left-handed in every other video (I have only seen the Christmas one like, once, but every time Roman is handling something - a pen, a gavel, his sword - it's left-handed). Logan is also a leftie -- he writes with his left & favours it when gesturing. The left arm/right arm thing is probs a reference to right brain/left brain stuff
This was a very fun video though! I really liked the creativity & details included here!
I think that when Patton said roman about two/thirds(14:50-ish) the way through, it kinda looked and sounded like a croak or something similar,
Foreshadowing maybe??
Nah. I'm pretty sure Thomas and co. said that they decided to make Pat a frog on a whim because they thought "Froggers" was a convincing name for a game and they wanted Patton to kinda have a link with it or smthn
@@bloody_jaydee2405 I still think its a cool headconon tho uvu
@@bloody_jaydee2405 Frogger is an actual game though, Thomas didn’t make it up
@@gwawrhearn1350 Oops- That's a mistake on my part then. Although I'm pretty sure they made Patton a frog because of that. Thanks for pointing it out 😊
@@user-ms5nh1ji4h Yea it does!! What do you think Virgil is? Personally I think he's a spider, because of their nature and stuff
I would’ve thought Virgil slapped his hand over his mouth because he’s gone echoed which strongly connects him to his past as a dark side
I’m only 9 min into the video but what if janus wanted to stay because they were talking about the past so Janus could know more abt the sides and be able to pretend to be them more without being found out
9:25
What would *creativity* know about love? Deceit literally spawned from Patton- the heart and emotions of Thomas...
If this is true this could also have been a *huge* blow to his ego or self esteem due to him being impersonated and nobody noticing
Oh, I get it, I think. Roman (Janus) was like, “You’ll be more happy if you get back with him. You’ll always be sad if you don’t.” Which isn’t true. He (Thomas) wouldn’t be happy if they got back together, and he wouldn’t always be sad, he would move on. But maybe Janus thought that was what’s right. Also, since he is denial, he could be denying that he would be able to move on happily without him.
At least, that’s what I think. But I could completely wrong.
What I absolutely love about these theories is that they open my eyes to new stuff, I didn't notice the signs of janus and stuff! It's just so crazy and convincing!
I love the podcast like style this video was in! Great job as usual 👏
You guys should make a vid on theory’s on why Virgil hates Janus that much and what happened between him and the dark sides/ why he might’ve left
but for that first clip you showed, i always just thought roman was embarrased/cringing at how bad thomas was dancing...?

"sn-eyebrow"
The main way to tell is if they rise up weirdly in the beginning, and Roman doesn’t rise up in the typical way, he rises up with his arms in the air. This could be to disguise his awkward rise, as well as reinforcing his disguise
Don't forget Janus's wonderful musical pun "Lies and Dolls"
You guys have to watch the bloopers cuz it shows that u haven’t. Some of the Roman scenes where he ‘lost his accent’ were bloopers put into the final cut. Also, the bloopers are just friggin hilarious and I can’t help but laugh every time I watch them!!
We have watched the bloopers literally a trillion times, because they are they funniest thing on the planet lmao. This theory is more of a joke than anything else. Roman was acting weird so we decided it was funny enough to talk about. It will likely never be brought up by any of the official script writers.
@@PickYourPoison I just realized I should really mean in that comment!! Uuummm sorry bout that-I was trying to say...I don’t know how to speak without sounding mean actually...i just the sides have a lot of blooper scenes that make it to the final cut and Tomas will sometimes break character XD (I hope that makes sense and doesn’t sound like I’m an ass!!)

..so are we ignoring the picture of Thomas looking somewhat like Janus at 12:17 in the background?
we noticed that a couple days ago sadly, or we would’ve put it in the video :(
@@PickYourPoison :( aw
Isn't it cool how even a few episodes before Janus was introduced they still had it all planned out? Even before that probably, maybe even when Virgil was first introduced or the episode after, it's really cool that they put so much thought into every little thing don't you agree?
oh yeah it’s incredible. we know they had the idea for the dark sides since (at the latest) accepting anxiety, so they’ve known for a little while. But the idea probably took off the minute Joan got on the team
@@PickYourPoison definitely, and how much detail gets put into everything is amazing, also quick side note, Janus would be a green snake because his scales on his face, (and possibly other places) are green, anyway, they still manage to put actually good jokes in the series, even with it being really serious at the moment
Very interesting! One thing that would like to add though is when the sides goes into the mind palace of another side, they become affected by it. Just like when they went in Virgil's room, they all started to act scared and anxious, a bit out of character. When in Patton's room, I would assume for Them to be also different. Patton is childish and tries to hide bad emotion as much as possible. So maybe that would make Roman wants to love someone no matter the cost ?
It's just a thought. I Really liked your point a view ! It got me wondering if janus appeared in earlier videos with me noticing :)
Oh mah god! How was it so obvious
I've seen this theory before and I firmly believe it, except I don't think it was Janus himself, I think it was Janus like, possessing him or something?
13:44 Virgil looks uncomfortable like he knows that someone he's supposed to protect Thomas and the light sides from if in the room but he can't do anything
DAMNIT I'M NEVER GONNA BE ABLE TO WATCH THIS WITHOUT SEEING JANUS NOW
i really hope all of this is intentional because this thickens the plots way more. we might need to look for deceit more often in videos. i hope one day one of the sides brings this up and Roman is just sitting there confused because he doesn't remember it ever happening.
The guys and dolls and the black and yellow thing convinced me in this theory.
Everything else can be acting or just coincide, but why would they go out of their way to add specifically black and yellow ?
They keep saying that his voice was not Roman's voice. But you need to understand that both Roman and Janus's voices are very similar. When he's angry, he probably sounds more serious than romantic and dashing. Also, Virgil was more surprised that he had his demon voice on and that's why Logan knew that Virgil himself was lying because it was obvious that his anxiety was worsening. He covered his mouth because he was afraid of his anxiety. Plus, since Roman is really romantic, of course he'd want Thomas to get back into a relationship no matter who with and as quickly as possible. And why would Janus tell Patton to cry out to Thomas? That's more of something Roman would do. And Roman is kinda an idiot. So yes. He'd get excited over buttons because it's ironic and funny for the fans. He'd interrupt Logan and change the subject because he has the attention span of an untrained puppy.
18:01 the remus point is spot on! when it goes back to thomas after roman says "your uncle", the picture in the background is thomas HOLDING A FAKE MUSTACHE UP TO HIS FACE?
This is very late, but maybe the reason Janus wanted them to stay in Patton;'s room was because it was affecting Virgil. Janus obviously has a history with Virgil - he was a darkside, until something happened - and the other sides have refrained from saying the word PARANOIA, which is basically heightened anxiety , OR the DARKSIDE of Virgil.
Another thing. In DWIT, there are instances where Remus' traps play on Thomas' FEARS of growing old alone, having no one to help him (disappearing photos) and the door being unlocked. If you haven't got what I'm playing at here, let me take you back to SvS.
Janus, to Virgil: You are in control of Thomas' FEARS, are you not?
KEY WORD: FEARS = ANXIETY = EXTREME FEAR = PARANOIA
Also, Remus was playing Logan, purposely trying to annoy him and make him ANGRY - there are other signs of the orange side revealing himself in other episodes, but i feel like the darksides are trying to push the lightsides to their boundaries and expose their secrets - Logan becoming the Orange side, and Virgil becoming a darkside again. But here's the thing - Janus has hinted that Virgil was hiding something in SvS - and not long after, when Remus arrived, Virgil revealed that he used to be a darkside - maybe, Virgil knew that Janus was planning something, and in order to prevent more damage in the future, told the truth...
Anyway! i love your work, but anyway - hope this makes sense :)
Question: when the next Sanders Asides comes out, will you make a reaction video about it?
We can try, but it depends on school. We're going to be in separate countries in a few weeks so time zones might make it difficult.
just an update, we decided that we will be reacting to it for the first time over zoom!
@@PickYourPoison yay :D
* Side breathes in a slightly different way*
*_"D E C I E T !!!"_*
Don’t forget in the song incomplete when Parton talks about his issues Roman seems surprised in a way even though he was supposedly there for this discussion
I think the main thing to remember when making theories about this at all is that sanders sides is all a metaphor. In this case we should address why Thomas's romanticism would be falsified in this case, which could be something along the lines of looking back on a relationship with unrealistic thoughts and memories. But if there is no metaphorical reason to believe that romantic feelings would be in some way substituted by self preservation or lying then just because it's dramatic to think about characters we care about being impersonated doesn't mean that there's logical reason to see this theory as headcanon.
I think people so often refer to the sides as characters that they forget that they are manifestations of Thomas and therefore not their own people. This is all metaphorical and that is what should mainly be focused on with theories.
Love this! I hope it becomes a series can’t wait!
An idea for a video would be to review the sides abilities, especially dark sides.
We actually already have notes regarding this so we could absolutely get a script going for it soon.
• PickYourPoison • Yee. Sorry for commenting so much btw
haha we love hearing what you guys have to say :)
• PickYourPoison • :)
Yes! I’ve always wanted someone to talk about that!
I really like this theory! And in fact, I'd like to point out something that might solidify it. In "Can Lying be Good" during the credit scene, Janus (Deciet) started to list off punny names that are based on different plays. The VERY FIRST ONE he does is "Lies and Dolls".... Sound familiar? Thats because he is referring to "Guys and Dolls" the play mentioned in this episode!
3:17 also another point that could back up this point is that Roman can speak spanish whereas thomas cannot, so it would make sense for him to be able to play an instrument even if thomas initially couldnt
Also in that butt part he was also in Remus's voice, so I would assume janus was thinking of what remus would say and put it into Roman, then got out of control and his vocals went straight to Remus while his appearance of Roman remained
Ik I'm like 2 years late but idk if this is in a further episode or if this was mentioned but there was one episode Roman didn't come out cuz Thomas' ego was bruised. I haven't seen the episode in this video but if Thomas is heartbroken and Roman is the Romantic side then he wouldn't come out. This is just a theory and I'm not 100% sure. So, this totally makes.
You know 2 people going back and forth over something is actually a cool concept
I really like this theory!!! It's so interesting, and it'd be so cool if you were right! At the same time though I feel some of the examples could be explained by the fact that they were in Patton's room? Just a few of them, but I figured I'd mention it because why not, also because any and all comments help your channel 🌻
Just came back to this after two years and it’s still just as brilliant as I remembered 😂 I hadn’t watched Sanders Sides in forever but recently I saw a clip of it and got pulled back in. I’m rewatching the series and honestly? It still holds up today. It’s funny, clever, interesting. It’s actually even better watching this now I’m older than it was when I was obsessed with it years ago. The jokes get better, the acting is great. I remembered you guys and this video + the theories you made about the orange side and now I’m rewatching your videos as well. You guys are awesome! I hope you keep making content like this when the new episodes come out. I’m very excited about the future of Sanders Sides now and the oncoming reveal of the orange side (hopefully). Thank you again for this wonderful video!
Janus also asks Roman on tips for pretending to be the sides, because he’s been caught at being Patton and Logan, and then doesn’t get caught when he tries again. Who knows how many times after that episode that he was pretending to be another side! Also, it makes sense he wants to stay there as he is more powerful in the mind palace ESPECIALLY if it’s in Pattons Room, if he is the ‘flipped’ side of Patron, it would make sense that he was powerful in this place. ALSO also, he would be better at pretending to be Roman, as he had Remus around to go off of. And if we look at the new episode with the orange sign, he’s getting better at Logan….
And also after Decit makes Virgil say no, Virgil starts looking like he wants to say something (you can even see him trying!)(He probably is trying to tell someone that it's decit) but it looks like something(or someone) is stopping him.
I thought this would be far-fetched but holy shit- and in the clip when patton said "Lying is wrong," passive aggresivly theres a photo in the back of thomas wearing gloves covering his ears at 12:19
I was not convinced before watching this theory, but now it looks like Thomas intentionally put clues like that in this video. I always assumed something was off watching this video, but I couldn't tell what.

Thank you for noticing
Sorry for the late comment but my gosh
I've rewatched the story so many times and I never ever noticed this but when looking for it- gosh that's definitely Janus and I'm shocked and confused about why- and where was Roman. Gosh I Love Thomas-
and you could even see virgil try to say the truth and even struggled for many seconds before not being able to resist janus' lie anymore
edit: also remember in CLBG when Janus started to get pissed near the end because he was losing and he started to give up the act? as soon as thomas said that lying is a side he would rather not feed into he got really upset and started ranting. that whole rant was janus' voice and how he acts.
edit edit: and the music as he gets so worked up is the SAME music in CLBG when janus started to get pissed and rant against thomas about how in this case lying is not wrong AAAAH
edit edit edit: and the way patton said lying is wrong kinda sounded like he wanted to say "deceit" but he of course couldnt do that and so he had this almost "dude shut up lying is wrong and you are NOT showing up today" sound to it.
not to mention deceit’s music played a couple times
Theory Time!
(sorry it's so long)
Since Janus is Thomas' Deceit, then Janus being bad at lying (a major part of his job) reflects on Thomas' capability of lying. Like, Janus being bad at deception and lying may mean that Thomas is a bad liar (even when he does lie). To add on to this, Janus being excellent at hiding things from Thomas but being bad at disguising himself as another Side could mean Thomas is very good at lying to himself but not to others. For example, in the end card of Can Lying Be Good? (when Thomas was about to lie to Joan but then didn't cause he saw Janus), Thomas literally just couldn't lie to Joan. He saw Janus and actively decided to not lie. Also, there's been many times when the other Sides (especially Virgil and Patton) have steered him away from lying or called him out on it because "it's bad" or "lying is wrong".
But Janus kept himself hidden for quite a while, along with Remus (and assumingly the Orange Side, who I theorize to be Rage). And since Janus is a Side of Thomas, a *part* of him, wouldn't that imply that his capabilities are also Thomas' capabilities? To a point, at least. If Janus is so good at hiding things from Thomas that Thomas doesn't want to find out about, then that may mean he's pretty good at lying to himself.
Which also brings the question: if Janus is getting *better* at lying, then is Thomas turning into more of a liar? Or is Thomas getting better at lying to himself or getting a more warped perception of morals/morality (reference to Janus getting Patton's impression much more accurate) because of his poor mental health? Just a thought.
----
Separate thing: Janus is like a protector, a gatekeeper of sorts. He kept himself hidden because Thomas "didn't want to feed into that Side of him". He kept Remus hidden and unknown, especially since his mental health wasn't as bad until things just piled up all at once (so Remus didn't have much reason to reveal himself until then). He's been doing a great job at keeping Rage (the Orange Side, Cronos?) hidden. I know this has been discussed before, but it reminds me of something. What if Janus also represents a little bit of Thomas' Ignorance? Specifically, his Ignorance of Self? He knows there's more to himself, from Remus' random thoughts about jumping out of a moving car before he was even revealed to the other Sides so insistent that he doesn't lie to Thomas believing he was a completely honest person. Janus could be part of the reason he (as a character, I think) had a pretty delayed acceptance of himself being gay. Part of that I think is because of Patton as Morality and Thomas' Catholic upbring, but my point still stands.
---
A FINAL NOTE, I SWEAR: what if Rage/the Orange Side/Cronos(?) also represents Thomas' Ignorance but more of his Ignorance of Feelings or Ignorance of Outside Information? If your theory is correct, Pick Your Poison, about Rage being both Wrath & Sloth (Expressed & Repressed anger/hurt feelings), then perhaps Rage keeps feelings or emotions Thomas doesn't want to deal with/feel locked away? Perhaps Rage wants Thomas (and the other Sides) to express themselves rather than repress anything (because we all know how bad that can be)? Maybe he wants Thomas to stop hiding things from himself and just let himself feel and sort through *everything* he needs to sort through and feel, BUT he won't let Thomas in on whatever Thomas doesn't want to deal with (kind of like Janus).
SORRY THIS WAS SO LONG. I HAD A LOT TO SAY.
Now I've got to add this to my document, oh great--
I really like this theory, but Roman rose up instead of just showing up.
As we've seen only light sides can raise up, like in "can lying be good" Janus disguised as Patton just shows up instead of raising.
If this theory is correct that means that dark sides have the ability to raise up.
Or perhaps Deceit has the ability to rise up, just because it would be important to his impersonations. Or that dark sides *can* rise up, they just *don't*. Or maybe they can rise up when acting as each other.
I don't know if we remembered to mention this in the video, however our theory was that Roman was only replaced by Janus whilst in the mind palace. We did not see Roman rise up into Patton's room at all. By the time the camera finally pans to him, he has presumably already been in the room for nearly a minute.
@@PickYourPoison We also have already seen Janus sink in and out in his post-credits conversation with virgil. It seems like it's entirely plausible Virgil was just unique in the "no rising up" thing- especially as it would make sense, as Anxiety can come out of nowhere.
also virgil was able to in accepting anxiety and he used to be a dark side he even said "im not used to the whole rising up thing"
My jaw was dropped for this whole video this is such a hot take thank you oh my god. This is genius
Only hot takes on pick your poison
In response to Virgil looking surprised and covering his mouth, I think that was in reaction to his voice distorting , though if it was Janus who made him lie i suppose it could be for both reasons
This is one of the most interesting theories I have seen for Sanders Sides! When I had watched I had just assumed Roman was getting ahead of himself and Pattons room was influencing everyone there to act strangely (Virgil being gloomy - also when he said no I assumed it was him scared of leaving the memories or something , Patton forgetting what he was worried about, Logan feeling even more left out??) Yeah now that I think about it it doesn't really make sense lol. The only one the room seemed to influence was Patton (forgetting his worries) because I assume he was the only one who didnt realize (or forgot) at first that Roman was Janus.
Either way I didn't pay close enough attention to it and now that I notice it your theory makes so much sense.
Now the only thing is that I have to see if Roman remembers anything or not after this episode to fully verify the theory.
Also I love your way of editing, it made it easy to understand and having the clips there to actually show evidence. (Not that other people don't do that, I just sometimes feel like it isn't enough.)
Now normally someone in my position would say "oh sorry for wasting your time, making you read this comment" or " thank you if you actually did" but I don't care because my sister is a silly pants who called me " one of those long essays writer comments I skip and I do not appreciate that. So I'm making this as long as possible so she has to wait for her bedtime story. There. You... you fricker
I heard about this theory before but I'm glad I got more info on it all I can say is 👏👏 well done Janus
I feel like some of these could be explained away with the affect of Patton’s room, but some just can’t!! I really do think this this theory could be true!
I definitely agree! There are several examples in the episode of Pattons room having an effect on the behavior of the sides, causing them to do or say things that would typically be considered out of character. We just wanted to make sure we covered our bases in this video since we knew people would point out other examples!
