Hello Mr, I just watched the video on grading this driveway. Talking about the building that has water standing in it. It may be a good size job for y'all, but I would take some readings with a lock level or rotating laser. I'm pretty sure you could cut a swale in front of the doors, and have it drain to either side of the building. And instead of crowning the road, when you get out to the section where the building is, id super elevate it to where the water drains to the other side of the road. At least that way, you won't be draining the driveway to the shop.

Good evening GP, I had the exact problems in Shefford and I did the same that you good folks did and I also drop by 2 feet infront my house the ground level and put a water French drain to catch the left over water going to my house too ( many videos about that subject 2 yrs ago !!! ) You can also revers the crown infront the garage and I also did the same too so the water was not going their but instead passing by. Small ditch to evacuate the water away from the road is an OUTSTANDING idea 👌👍😇 but drop the ground level infront the garage !!! Cheers

awesome job by an awesome team. Always fun to work with friends ... even more when it is to help a friend. You are right; we built a garage 3 years ago and I am so pleased that the gentleman who did the land prep insisted on adding a few truck load og gravel for the pad. That raised it above the surrounding terrain and prevented all tyes of water drainage nightmares. Good advice

I ran a road grader for the county and we would hit the gravel roads hard right after a good rain. It helped keep the fines (dust) down and mix it back in instead of blowing off on the farmers land or yard. It just packed down real good

If he gets a couple loads of gravel I think you may be thinking about this backwards on the application. You already have a pretty good crown on that road. Think about spreading it from below the garage towards your run offs you created. And the the point where you terminated your ditch, stop the new gravel. Even a layer of 1-3 inches up to that point creates a berm like effect, and it you taper that leading edge toward the ditch it will help channel the water coming down the slope of that driveway towards the ditches. Hope this has been clear enough, it’s what I have done with mine. Cheers from NB Canada

    @tractorman4461 Před 2 lety +1

Awesome job GP. Guy was no slouch either with the loader and box blade. The run offs will help your buddy a LOT for sure. To keep water out of my shed, I poured a catch basin with steel grate and routed a 12" drain tile under ground to discharge a good distance beyond the shed. But I agree, the problem originated with the original layout of the drive as well as the building flush with the ground in the direction of natural drainage. He is MUCH better off now than he was before though, thanks to a couple of good neighbors.

Without a doubt, you are man who sees and appreciates the big picture.
It's hard for people who don't, but often, sometimes even harder, for those who do, to learn how to ask the right questions.
This is at times, almost characteristic of every Yoda, Gandalf, etc figure we've seen in our stories.
Yeshua, all too often, pedastisized to the point of only a vague reference to his humanity, he too, could not rush his realization.
Nor can we, however, we can hold out for it.
Great tips and advice here on offer.
One thing I'd add, many compact tractors on the market lack the necessary 'down pressure ' on rear implements due to lack of hydraulics.
I'm at the point of ordering a kit for my 2007 T1520 NH in preparation for the power rake I'm hoping to find somewhere.

Hi Gord, Sure is a more enjoyable job when you have quality equipment. I am a bit north of you and had the same problem with pooling in front of the garage. I tried everything to divert the water but these warm spells with rain that we have been having the last few winters in January and February had been hard to work with. Trenches filled with water and froze making them useless in the spring. I finally had a pro with years of experience come in with an excavator and a dump truck. I was surprised to see him haul out six truckloads from the front and several more from the sides as he reset the grade to proper levels and slopes. He used the laser transit and within a day and a half he was done. Two winters since that work was done and I’ve been high and dry. No more caulking the garage doors shut and vacuuming water all night! Makes for a much more pleasant spring.

Need a 24 inch wide by about a foot or more deep ditch. Lay some self drilled schedule 40 in the bottom of the ditch and daylight the pipe somewhere. That's a lot of work and the cost of PVC is more than double what it was 2 years ago.
I have a similar situation with one of my buildings. I made a blind ditch in my gravel with my rear blade. I tilted it all the way to one side. The ditch is not very big or aggressive and you can't see it since it's full of gravel. It works pretty well but I will probably have to do it over again soon.

GP, you and Guy did a fine job. I'm wondering if the home owner could install a french drain near the garage door entrance. The french dran can have the piping sloped away and downhill to a retention pond to keep all water at bay. Man, I'd be peeved if I came into my garage and had water pooled inside the bays. I did have a similar issue where water was coming into the back door of the garage from all the rain down pour off the roof drains. I installed several inter-connecting french drains and voila, the rain water was no longer an issue. The rain water all followed the path of the drainage pipes away from our house. Now I was beyond tickled to death. Enjoyed a full-watch. Say hey to Guy for me. Later my friend. Don 👍🏽🤠 7/7/22

I had a similar problem with my driveway, and what we did was dug out along the one side of the drive, ( where it naturally sloped) then put big O down, and filled the ditch with rip rap rock. The access water runs into the rip rap, then out the big O into a deep dug-out hole, filled with rocks, that acts like a catch bowl for the water. We then had a few loads of "m " type gravel on the surface which packs down quite hard. I hardly have a stone loosen even in heavy rains.

I think what you did will help tremendously. But you can install other projects such as water bars. Since this a driveway is used a lot, I recommend a rolling dip. It requires moving a lot more dirt than a water bar; they are easier to drive over and last longer. Put the first right at the bottom before you get in front of the garage or at the run-off spot.

Any chance you can grade that slope away from the garage and into the woods? Seems like a bit of a compound grade coming off the house and driveway could be made into the woods to direct the water away. Doesn’t need to fall much, 1” or so every 10 ft will be enough to help direct the water away.

Just get a tripod mounted grade control laser, learn how to set the grades and regrade the compound in front of the garage so the garage isn't the low point. Need one Rodman foreman and one operator.
The garage if still a problem could have a highway rated drain grate placed in front of it and a drain pipe buried going off to a convenient kow point . Drain grates come with a channel to be placed in a 10 to 12" sq. section of concrete c/w steel or cheap plastic grates depending on strength and durability needed.
Rent a small roller compacter and regrade any time that the ground isn't frozen.

Good morning. I did a followup video on it. Very happy it worked great however on the right side of the driveway, we should have dug the end of the gutter further into the forest as we did on the left side. It is good for normal rains but heavy rains will shed away into the trench on the left side but after too much rain, it begins to pool there. The main driveway itself always stays clear. Thanks for asking. Cheers!
