I had no idea what Oromo was but I looked it up and it turns out the Oromo people are an ethnic group in Ethiopia whose language had been completely banned from that country for decades and speaking it could result in up to 10 years in prison. So I thought it would be interesting to secretly learn this language which was extremely difficult because teachers and learning materials are few and far between. In all my years of watching this man, not one encounter has thought of him as racist whether he's buying food, clothes, or whatever. The encounters don't think of it as cultural appropriation. They get excited, look in wonder, and are full of appreciation that someone from a different culture took the time to learn theirs.
Those accusations of cultural appropriation and such are always coming from Westerners, be they black or white. Rarely from actual immigrants.
The moment we consider learning a foreign language and getting to know each other's wats as cultural appropriation, the doors between our cultures close, and, honestly, given the existence of nuclear weapos, the end of our species is only a step or two away. Each culture and each language is a completely different paradigm of reality, with ways of thinking that can be completely alien. It is paramount to the longevity of our species that we learn how to appreciate and understand one another.

Walk around most high school/college or university campuses (or any street for that matter) in a different ethnic attire, and you will get barraged by negativity.

If people want to wear cultural clothing for fashion (even if they don't know much about the culture), I literally see nothing wrong with that.

Honestly what impresses me most about Ari is his comprehension skills. Even on the vids that he only studies a language for 1-2 weeks (and clearly struggles speaking it) he still manages to understand what others are saying for the most part.
I think that comes with knowing so many languages. A lot of them evolved off of each other, probably to the point where if you know enough other languages and you know the structure/grammar of that specific language, you can figure it out. I only know basic Spanish as a second language, but I know several coding languages and that learning process feels similar to when I was learning Spanish. And of course, it depends on how similar one language is to the stuff you already know.
The understanding what is said is easier than formulating your response. 😅
@@OGDweeb Yes! I think I was hit on the part of my head that lets me *speak* other languages. When I was younger, they kept trying to bump me up in my foreign language classes because they thought I secretly spoke the languages or something, because I understood things very quickly. Then I would get to the higher level class and the teacher would be mad I couldn’t speak the language and send me back! 😅
A lot of times understanding is also context based. If you can understand 70-80% of the sentence because thats what you're familiar with, you can kinda still make out what the person means depending on the context of the conversation and the situation you find yourself in. Its still is hit or miss but its a skill you improve over time the more unfamiliar conversations you go ahead with. Ari ofcourse has mastered this and 90% of his conversations are kind of obvious, like why did you learn this language, how long?, some compliments, greetings, common phrases and so on.
I studied mandarin till hsk3 but still found myself fumbling to hold an actual conversation. After I began to watch Laoshu and Xiaoma, I understood these commonalities and now able to hold a 5 min flawless conversation in a native accent. But beyond that i'm still blank haha. But it definitely helped me overcome a plateau, and break the ice with many native speakers that now I can call as friends :)

It was banned under the previous dictatorship, but that ended in 1991
@@fey9915 Oromo luckily survived, but a language being banned for such a long period in the past can almost completely wipe it out today, see what happened to the Celtic languages in Ireland and Britain for example despite the attempts to revive and teach them

Smart has nothing to do with it, it's all about effort and consistency; of which most people never bother. Not saying he isn't smart, just don't discourage yourself or others with that type of roadblock thinking. You can do it too!
Autism can be a special gift when harnessed properly. I too have a MASSIVE memory bank, which is somewhat common in autistic people, and in fact sometimes it's a curse to not be able to forget things. My gift however is voice, I seem to be able to replicate *soo* many different kinds of vocal techniques, from throat singing to metal growling to operatic falsetto, I can do basically all of it and I'm not in the process of starting to get formal training to be able to do it professionally, rather than hidden away behind closed doors like I've done for my whole life LOL

I have friends from church who are from Ethiopia. They are some of the most kind and generous people I have ever met. My friend Dagmawit invited me and my family to her wedding and it was so amazing and beautiful. Ethiopian food is so delicious. It’s like nothing I’ve ever eaten before.

There's over 80 tribes in Ethiopia. Most can speak Amaringya because it's the main language of the country but a lot of them have their own dialects they speak amongst their family.

I would love a comprehensive study on xao to see how well his brain is "scored" on memory retention... Truly incredible. Even if he does take 15 or more days, having the ability to memorize fluent languages in pretty much any language is truly unhuman. Maybe xao is not from earth, but put here to help spread some positive influences on our messed up society now
There is a video on his channel where he gets his brain scanned and does IQ tests and stuff, pretty sure memory retention is something that they talk about but I could be misremembering.
He definitely is not fluent in most of these languages
@@brynna77 Perhaps not, but he knows a lot more than most would learn in 15 days; he's at least somewhat conversational in many of these languages if not fluent. For this particularly language he was hampered by the lack of educational material. That said, his facility with language is enough to be considered a savant capability. It's extremely rare, but not unique. Daniel Tammet, a famous savant, also has the ability to rapidly acquire languages. He once tested it for a television program by learning Icelandic in just one week.

another amazing video but i just have one question have you ever thought about learning hawaiian, i've been watching you and a lot of different polyglots for a long time but none of them have spoke hawaiian in a video, as a native hawaiian it would be so sick to see especially since the hawaiian language is slowly becoming a dying language with under 15,000 people being able to understand it and speak it fluently. Im still trying to learn it fully myself and im no where near fluent

This man has to be a literal genius. 15 days and he's already able to have a conversation? I learned Spanish for 4 years and I can hardly ask basic questions.
All comes down to interest at the end of the day, he studied more during every single one of those 15 days than you likely did in any day of those 4 years. Just because he enjoys learning languages that much.

The human instinct to learn is incredible man. Some are born with that drive to keep going and going in their interests like fishing, mechanics, engineers, artists, language speakers, etc... while others just lose the pull or desire to achieve those goals. The only reason you didn't learn jack squat from spanish in 4 years is because you just didn't care about it. But I bet whatever you did care about you did well in.
Learning languages helps you learn more languages.

I absolutely love the moments where he is talking to someone expecting them to speak one language, and they come out with another, and he smoothly switches to speaking the other language so effortlessly and you can tell he loves it when he gets to switch it up! Do you think you will ever try to learn a Sámi language? It's a bunch of rapidly declining languages of people in the Northern most parts of Sweden, Norway & Finland.
About 20K expected speakers in total, but some Sami languages only have 20 speakers left at all, like Ume Sami, Pite Sami or the super rare Ter Sami with 2 Totsl Speakers left!
They are very unique languages with of language variations which are all apart of the Finni-Ugric Languages. Their history is very interesting, and many different cultural quirks.
This is one of my favorite ones so far. Always impressive and everyone was SO excited to talk or even try other languages.

Banning a language. The world is nuts.
Not really more than half the world's languages are banned , to repress ethnic groups. Britain banned Irish,Welsh and Scottish for over 400 years. Ussr banned all native languages, and even today Russia bans most languages such as Tatar. China is clamping down on non mandarin language.. American clamped down on indigenous langues until the 70s

I resonated with the "it's a way to unlock people" although for me it's about the emotional bridging, not the free stuff... but I think the feeling is shared
I could tell it was OSFNA just by the thumbnail. If you came during the opening festival I could’ve seen you man. Btw Oromo hasn’t been “banned” in Ethiopia since 1974. And even before that it wasn’t really banned in actuality because it was spoken in the rural parts of Oromia where the vast majority of Oromo people lived. Oromo was banned for use in official situations like a court case or anything involved with the feudal system at the time.

I always say that the languages most worth learning are the ones that the speakers don't expect you to speak. I'm a Canadian of western Scottish ancestry (and look it), and when Irish people hear Irish come out of my mouth, they're shocked and thrilled, but Yiddish-speakers are fascinated. I haven't branched out into non-European languages (I speak some Hebrew, and have studied a little Swahili and Zulu on Duolingo, but I'm shy to practise them, and Haitian Creole is pretty easy because I speak French, but again, shy). I'm always impressed at how willing Arieh is to just put himself out there.
It gets easier the more you do it! Just remember that you'll make mistakes and it's totally fine. Notice how Ari makes tons of mistakes, but his efforts are appreciated and they're happy to help him learn. You're doing amazing already, keep it up! :)
