This promotional film presented by Pan American Airways System, PAA, describes the ideal vacation destination of Nassau in The Bahamas. The 70-minute journey from Miami to Nassau in a DC-3 airplane allows Americans to travel to this paradise with ease. This film from the 1940s was photographed and produced by Palmer Miller and Curtis F. Nagel and narrated by Clyde Kittell.
The film begins with travelers boarding the DC-3 airplane tail # NC 28301 (00:39). The plane takes off (00:59). An overview of Miami city and the coastline (01:22). The aircraft flies over the Gulf Stream (02:13) and reveals the tropical scene of The Bahamas (03:04). The airplane lands and the passengers exit (03:57). Footage of the rich, turquoise waters of Nassau (04:31) and a historical fort dating back to when the island was seized by pirates (04:48). The waterfront shows the native life and sailboats transporting imports and exports (05:27). Local women are weaving wicker into baskets and hats (06:05). Trade goods are sold to tourists and locals at a market (06:19). The streets of Nassau shows a slower lifestyle with bicycles, horse carriages, and nearly no cars (06:48). A colorful floral backdrop decorates the city (07:18). Large, luxurious hotels with ocean views and inviting pools are sited along the beach (08:23). Guests are dining under parasols and live musicians entertaining (08:54). By the Government House, policemen are marching in white uniforms (08:59). Travelers gather to get a glimpse of the Duke and Duchess on the steps of a church (09:19). At the “Paradise Beach” visitors are enjoying the sunny beach (10:13). Boat racing, a popular sport on Nassau, provides activities for both locals and tourists (10:51). Other activities are golfing at the Bahama’s Country Club (11:49), waterskiing on the beach and through the canals of New Providence (12:27), and going deep-water fishing for tuna and Marlin (13:57). Using a small fish as bait, a man catches a marlin after an exhausting two-hour battle (16:31). A seaside village portrays the former slave-grounds and plantains, now populated by free locals living in modest huts (16:50). Young girls make jewelry from fish scales and seashells, by painting them with bright pigments (17:42). A popular item of export are sponges in many shapes and sizes, also used by Bahamian residents (18:58). “Treasure Island” near Nassau preserves history with a replica fort and wood carved figures from the era of piracy (19:31). Sign for Fort Jack McCutcheon (20:00). At another small island, a colony of flamingos and their fledglings make for a unique sight (21:47). Mud-mounts in shallow water function as nests for the flamingos’ eggs (22:25). The sun sets over The Bahamas (22:56), and the DC-3 aircraft takes off to conclude this promotional film by PAA (23:38).

As a Miami native and life long boater, diver and fisherman I love seeing old videos of Miami and the Bahamas. I'm just under 50 years old so this was filmed well before my time but I recognize everything like I was there when this was filmed. The waters in the Bahamas still look as pristine as in this video but in Miami, not quite as nice. I have run my own boats over to the Bahamas many times, almost exclusively to Bimini as it's only a 50 mile ride from Miami. I live on the water and keep my boat docked out back. From my house to Bimini is a quick 2 hour cruise depending on how nice the gulf stream is on that particular day. I have made it in as little as an hour (flat calm seas and running 50+ MPH) and as long as 4 hours crawling along in nasty 6+ foot seas. I have been to a few Bahamas islands via plane and cruise ship. I have been to Nassau several times over the years by plane and cruise ship.
Thank you for your lovely information. I would have loved to fly on a DC3😊
As a modern day bahamian i love the way my country once was . All of these monuments and history was destroyed or sold by the generation(s) before me and its great that i can keep this as a memory.
Thanks for the comment. Yes, these films reveal a nostalgic past ... and sometimes they reminds us of what was lost, that we dearly miss. Love our channel? Help us save and post more orphaned films! Well this was interesting to watch. A vast difference between now and then.
I flew on a DC-3 with American Airlines when I was a child. My dad worked with them. Also flew on one with the FAA when I was in the Air Force in 1974.
The one shown in the video was a DC-3A, which would appear to be Pan Am's very first DC3. It flew for just 8 years before being dumped off to a Mexican outfit which immediately went out of business.
The iconic DC-3 is still a workhorse today!
Glad to know that
Most are converted to turboprops
@@hertzair1186 yup. That's correct. No more Pratt's
I flew on a DC-3 as a child in 1961 from Nassau to Miami. The flight to Nassau from Montreal was on a Vanguard, I think, possibly a Super Connie.
This is gold! Thank you
Ah it's nice to watch these videos and see how things were many years ago
They tried to keep us down but we thrived and survived! Now The Bahamas is the best Caribbean country with it being the third richest in The Americas and a strong GDP
Congratulations
@@Joe-mz6dc damn straight! usually when the British leave a country it's in ruins
The Bahamas are in the Atlantic, not in the Caribbean.
@@joselassalle4958 That’s what I’ve been saying 🤷🏽♂️ but some or most would disagree because of the trade unions, commonwealth, & the Caribbean Community but I agree with you
@@nae6ix culturally as well, we share customs as a Caribbean nation.
Thank you
12:49 James Bond "Thunder Ball" scene.
Absolutely……that is cool, isn’t it.
I wouldn't generally refer to tropical cumulus clouds as fluffy friends
"Cumulo Granite" clouds is more like it.
Evil cumulus clouds ?
There was a good reason why the Duke of Windsor was governor. Given his pro-Nazi views, the British government sent him to the Bahamas when World War II started, figuring he couldn't cause too much trouble there.
Holy crap..
agree. from Melbourne Australia
The natives look so happy and productive. Smiling faces!
They were happy in their native environment
@@stevephillips3541 their are no natives from the bahamas the last died out in 1520
@@spoopyboi1005 ummm the land natives died in 1540 but by 1800’s it was populated again, they came back from the Spanish islands. I am a Bahamian, a native Bahamian..
Such a placating comment. Like we’re puppies….. but you’re looking at it as the aggressor not the victim .
@Haku Yuki don’t compare it bot .. ain’t the same
I just wanted to say I don’t know what you might be going through Or what situation you’re in right now but I no god is there for you and he loves you God bless everyone who came across this.🇧🇸❤️242
Don't be weird
12:30 "Water skiing is popular and safe and easy to learn" as the video shows the boat towing a water skier through a narrow channel with concrete and rock walls. LOL. An amateur could easily find themself slamming into the concrete seawall at 20 MPH. And no ski vest so if the skier falls and gets hurt and/or knocked unconscious they drown to death. Funny how things that are now considered dangerous were once considered very safe.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🇧🇸
All dressed like queens and kings, ... can't say the same of today Peppa pigs/ passengers.
I remember my first airline flight in 1971….we were all dressed as if we were going to church.
4:17 - That's where the royal family parked him during the war to keep him from spying for the Nazis.
Exactly, I was surprised to see that guy there ...I never knew that he went there from France
Miami 1940's - America's Riviera
Miami 1980's - America's Cocaine Capital
Miami 2020's - America's See and Be Seen Place
Funny you say that. I just returned from a trip to Europe and I was surprised how many travel adverts I saw for Miami. I never knew it was such a popular destination for Europeans. WHY???
@@lisalu910 Warm weather and a very active night life. You can go clubbing especially EMD and Urban music till 5 am and some stay open till 12 pm next day.
I moved to Miami in 1968 at 16 years old. It was a wonderful place to live. I worked for Southern Bell Telephone Co. on Miami Beach in the middle 1970's. I remember old people sitting in their rocking chairs on their porches on South Beach looking at the ocean. Sadly, it's a complete shit hole now. Glad I left Florida.

Nassau is much more interesting these days…and the people of Nassau are no longer under the thumb of British colonialism. Lots to do there …We like the Rum Cake Factory, the Straw Market, the Fort, The Fish Fry and Queen Anne’s Staircase…
Chris Columbus and Ponce De Leone. Them 2 fellows sure where Busy they must have discovered everything ???
Dirty little native boats?
Back when things were just right . An orderly society ,
"Yeah, when only rich white people could afford an airplane fare. How dare the poor and minorities sully the airports!"
You dipshit.
Exactly
"Obey. Smile. Look happy. Don't speak up. Conform. Make babies. Conform. Obey."
Yeah no, this creeps me more than anything.
@@Doodlesthegreat Like I said, when Things were just right and things worked. Minorities totally benefit from what white society has done for them , otherwise they would be living in the 1800's or in huts still . Every invention of the modern age was made by White people , Electricity , flight , Aircraft, Gun powder, Medicine, electronics, Plenty ful food, Safe food , Housing , Highways , Cars .... Minorities get to enjoy what ( white people ) have given the world . So if i'm a dipshit that makes you just plain Shit ... probably pig shit I would bet
Well a video like this you have to take with a grain of salt it will only show an ideal facade but society wanted changes the the video wouldn't shed light on
Miami before it became Miami Cuba as my Puerto Rican neighbor Pedro used to call it, they ruined Miami the same way the Puerto Ricans ruined many other American cities like where I live in Perth Amboy NJ, now it's the Dominicans, Colombians you name it.
Irritating voice over.
